Burn2 Begins

Burn2, the largest yearly art and music festival, got started at 10AM yesterday. The weeklong event has dozens of artistic exhibits and DJ events across four sims. The mega-event, one of the biggest yearly events in Second Life, has been taking place on the grid from it's first year, originally called Burning Life. The event had some help from the Lindens for several years, who provided them the sims for free until around 2010 following Linden Lab's restructuring and cutbacks, after which the event became known as Burn2.

Burn2 describes itself as "an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man Regional, the only virtual world Regional out of more than 100 Regional groups worldwide, and is the only Regional to burn the Man! This unique virtual Regional spreads the culture and Ten Principles of Burning Man year-round in Second Life, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall - a virtual echo of Burning Man itself."

One can drop in on the event by arriving at Burning Man-Deep Hole (224/92/25). To see the schedule of events, check the calendar here: http://www.burn2.org/calendar

The event will go on until Sunday October 23, with the builds remaining for a few days afterwards.

Burn 2 Begins Today

After weeks, perhaps months, or preparation, the Burn2 Festival is finally here. Starting today at 10AM SL time, the exhibits were opened to all to see. Come and see the Second Life adaptation of the real-life Burning Man music and art festival from the Black Rock Desert in Nevada attended by over fifty thousand people every year. While it's not quite that crowded in the Burn2 sims, this is a popular annual event, so be prepared for some lag, especially at peak traffic times. Those who arrive can expect to enjoy numerous art exhibitions and many music events.

The event lasts until October 26. While the "Burners" have made a few spinoff events around the year, there's only one Burn2. So don't dally.

Join the fun at Deep Hole (224, 92, 25)

For more information, check the Burn2 website: http://www.burn2.org/ . For pictures, check the group Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/groups/burn2/pool/

The Burn Begins

The Burn2 is off to a great start. The dates are October 1 through 9 and although it seems far away it will be here soon. Plots are being sold to builders and they are busy are working on their creations off the playa getting ready for their projects and are excited. I cannot wait to see the artistic visions for Rites of Passage, the theme of Burn2, 2011.

Any resident of Second Life who wishes to can be involved in some way. There are many opportunities for volunteering. Do not feel you may not have enough skill. There is training for you. The commitment of time should not bother you either. You will fit in somewhere for the time you would like to spend. You can visit the tent at Deep Hole to see all the possible groups to join.

As a Ranger, I have already started my training. I am also a Lamplighter so I can join in the lamplighter's parade when I am available. That is great fun! The greeters are wonderful helpers to new arrivals on the playa, assisting with questions about where to go and passing out gifts. The dpw has a lot of cleaning up to do during the burn.

People are also invited to loan or “donate “ a spare sim you may have to allow more space for the Burn2 builds. Your sim will be added to the 5 sims already at the Playa and returned to you at the end of the Burn. If you are not familiar with the Burn which used to be Burning Life in SL, visit the wiki - http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Burning_Life. This is the second year that the Burn is solely run by Second Life residents. The Leads are depending on you to make the Burn! You can visit the kiosks at the tent to sign up or just to get more information.

Skin Burn

Gemma Cleanslate's time as a ranger at the "Skin Burn" on Saturday October 30th was interesting to say the least. Contrary to what one might expect of an event that asked everyone to leave their clothes behind, there was very little nudity. Gemma remarked she saw more on a typical day of Burn 2. As people could wear textures, the effect was more like the avatars became living canvases (virtually living anyway).

Gemma provided Ranger Leondra Larrson's Flickr account link for her Burn2 pictures: Click Here, as well as providing the link of popular Second Life Singer Debi Latte's Skin Burn Flikr pictures: Click Here,

Burn2: More Fire and Fun

You thought that Burning Man 2 was all over. Guess what? Today on October 30th, Saturday, at 12:00 Noon there will be one more burn. It is a Skin Burn. You are invited to bring your avatar in skin only .. Yes skin only, no prims for a last burn .

Burning Man has a strongly clothing optional / decorated nudity culture - and they are bringing that to the virtual playa at Burn2. The Skin Burn is a special, final burn of The Man where all avatars on the playa will be at their lowest possible ARC and script load so the agent limits can be bumped as high as possible.

It's a party where you're invited to be creative with the idea - you can use skins and layers (but no prim attachments) to create a "look" that is funky and fun. What kind of skin? What kind of look? All kinds! Nekkid, painted, burning or clothed. Sexy, comical, radical, colorful, monochromatic, strange, bizarre, disgusting, obnoxious, creative, ugly, beautiful or creepy! Wear a couch texture! Or a flag! Zombie! Playmate! Whatever rocks your boat.

Before entering the playa you will have some help with lowering arc . The rangers and others will be available to help you so come on to this area: Gypsy Falls (68, 37, 406). After the burn stay for one last party !

Burn2 Ending: Crystal Lotus Temple Burn

After a week, Burn2, one of the major festivals in Second Life came to a close. One of the two final events, the burn of the Crystal Lotus Temple. A Grid bug caused things to go slightly out of plan, but the magic of the moment was still there as the crowd enjoyed this climax of the show.

Read the account of the festivities in Events.

The Man Burns

All three corners of the sims that touched the sim bearing the Man were full to capacity! Everyone was expectant as the minutes ticked off the clock to the first burn at 12 noon Saturday. Lamplighters danced and played their drums.

At the stroke of 12 the fires started in a circle around the base of the Man. Debbie Trilling did a wonderful job of the burning. They spread slowly up the structure until they touched the legs, then swirled upward until the entire Man was engulfed and began to drop bits and pieces onto the playa.

All were enthralled at the sight. Emotions ran high, as we dashed to pick up the logs that were thrown to the ground and carry them to the fire. There was dancing and merriment. I attended the last burn also and it was just as exciting, since for most of the avatars there it was their first burn and I felt the same emotions.

The temple will burn Sunday and Monday morning. The playa with its magnificent builds will remain until October 30. You can still expect to find some parties and other activities going on at various plots.

Have fun.

Burn2: Metropolis Unveiled

On October 13, the Playa of Burn2 opened to the press. We were able to roam the sims and check out the magnificent builds that have grown from the soil of the desert. There are amazing sights and experiences waiting for all the visitors when the Burn2 opens to all on October 16.

Before you enter the gates you really should visit the “What is Burn2” site. Here you will learn about the real-life Burning Man on which the Burn2 in virtual life is based. The greeters will be waiting to meet you at the gates and help you if you need. They will have some gifts for you too.

As you arrive at the Art Department area, you will find a tent full of goodies for you to take with you, gifts from the generous builders. You will pass the Lamplighters Village, so stop there for a free drum or two. The Ranger Station is nearby . Rangers will be throughout the playa to assist with any problems that arise. Look for them in their distinctive hats. They are available for helping visitors too.

This year the theme is Metropolis -Civilization in the desert. So you will see all sorts of magnificence, and also simple builds . You can’t miss the Reno build from a distance. There are fewer sims this year, so you may be able to take in all the exhibits. Last year though, I was there every day in my ranger role. I know I missed some. Many are interactive, so get in there and try out everything. There will be many activities .. Stages with shows and dancing and DJs. Make sure you check out the porta-potties that have been decorated for your comfort and are all around the sims. Open the doors and poke your head in and admire the artistic fun.

The playa opens to you on the 16th of October at 12:00 Noon SL time: http://www.burn2.org/calendar

Rebar Ceremony on The Playa

The Rangers for Burn2, http://www.burn2.org/ , have finished our training. On Saturday the 25th, the Rebar Ceremony was held. The graduates gathered at the Ranger Headquarters on the Playa in anticipation of crossing the line. The address explained the symbolism of the ceremony.

In RL a long time ago, the first Black Rock Rangers took a step across a line in the desert. Ronan Carver said, “Danger Ranger took a stick, drew a line across the earth, and said ‘On the other side of this line, there exists a world where everything is different.’ Then everybody held hands and stepped across that line. The first settlers of Black Rock City had come to burn a wooden man. In doing so, they created a community.”

Rebar is the common anchor for tents and so the Rangers starting stepping over a length of rebar in 1996. Now the numbers of graduating Rangers are so large that the rebar is used to draw the line and the rebar is laid down at the end of the line at the Burning Man . “The important thing is what the rebar symbolizes. ..an anchor..”, said M2Danger Ranger.

So now we are ready and willing to help the community on the Playa! We have learned the skills to work with the community. Our community is busy building wonderful exhibits for the Burn2 week.(October 16 is the start.) It is exciting to watch it all grow from the soil upward. The Rangers are looking forward to it all!! Hope to see you there.

Greeters and Guides for Burn2

Time is passing so quickly. The playa is alive with builders working on their wonders. The entertainment planning goes on so that there will be music and fun for all the visitors. Brigit Ranger , the Community Lead for Burn2 has put out a call for Greeters and Guides. She says, “My hope is to find people who are looking for fun, like to meet new people, and who know the meaning of patience and perseverance. “

It is great fun to be a greeter. I have watched as they weave their magic like trapeze artists at the gate to the playa . Their friendliness and help to new arrivals makes for a happy start to your exploration. A volunteer need only dedicate 6-8 hours for that week , October 16 through 25, on the Burn2 playa. You will probably want to spend more time.

You can contact Brigit by sending her a note card or you can e-mail her at Brigitranger@gmail.com . You will receive training to prepare you for the fun.

Help Wanted at Burn2

The DMV (Department of Mutant Vehicles) of Burn2 is looking for volunteers. Artists and builders can all help with the creation of the fun vehicles that visitors to the Burn2 playa can pick up and drive around.

Emcee Widget says “Mosey on over to the VOLUNTEER FOR BURN2 link on the left there and find a DMV position that you like. Textures, scripts, builds, sits .. we need ya. Don't be shy. Oh..and wear a protector on your cheeks...we can make you break them from all the laughing we do.” Here is the link if you would like to take up his challenge: http://www.burn2.org/volunteer-signup.

Part of the fun of the playa is getting ready for the Burn2 which will take place October 16th through the 24th . There are many other jobs to apply for that do not require building skills so don’t be shy. Greeters have a lot of fun. Lamplighters dance up the road every day and night. There are many who did not get a plot in the lottery but here is a way of being part of it all.. Volunteer!

More Burn2 Preperation

Well, this morning Emcee Widget, on her way to Burning Man in real life, took time to let us know that the Theme Camp Applications are available on the Burn2 Blog. She also closed the lottery location. All those who have paid 100L are in the lottery for a plot.

In order to get a theme camp you must have a “compelling description“ of the site proposed and activities planned there. There are 12 plots available so you have to be really creative. Emcee suggested that you take a look at the Burning Man website for some ideas of a theme camp. Visit http://www.burn2.org/theme_camps for more information on the Burn2 camps.

The theme camps can be any theme not exactly in keeping with the overall theme as I read it. The judges will see what you have to offer and make a decision. Deadline is 12:00 Noon SLT Sunday, September 5. Winners will be announced Sunday, September 12.

Good Luck to all!!
