Burn2 Summer Event: Circus of Fire And Fun

After recovering from a hand injury and taking time as a SLB volunteer, Gemma Cleanslate is back writing articles. Here, she writes about Burn2's summer burn event. Themed "Circus of Fire and Fun," with the Burners,  you'll find both.

Winter Burn Aurora

Burn2, the Second Life version of the Burning Man festival, has been so popular, there are spinoff events around the year. This past weekend, the Winter Burn took place. Named "Aurora," there were numerous music events and art displays. Gemma Cleanslate was there, and took pictures.

Burn2 Festival Ends, Sims Still Up For Now

This weekend was the high point, and the final two days of the Burn2 art and music festival. Saturday was the burning of "The Man," which took place just after Noon SL time. The wooden build burned, and collapsed to the ground, followed by the Burners going over and dancing over the embers.

This was followed on Sunday with the Temple Burn. Starting at Noon, various prayers were read as they burned in the censor, "Peace & Love for the World, which we live in." After a half hour, it too began going up in flames. Like "The Man," once the temple's ashes started to cool, the Burners paraded and danced around the remains. Someone would post a short video of the burn (link).

But Burn2 is about much more than the burning of it's two most important structures. The twelve sims have numerous builds, some quaint, some very well done, and some that show a lot of imagination.

The sims should be up for a few more days, though some of the camps will likely be taken up early, allowing more people to see them before most of the sims fade back into the virtual nether, leaving only the permanent Burning Man - Deep Hole. But for those who missed it, there are a few spinoff events across the year.

Burn2 Summer Burn, "Whimsy"

This weekend from Friday to Sunday, the Burn2 Summer Burn event took place. Called "Whimsy," it had a whimsical tone with many of the builds intending to be on the amusing side. It took place at Burning Man - Deep Hole.

But not all of it was whimsical. When I finally had a chance to send an alt over, there was a tribute to a late friend, "Next song is Take Five, a cover of it by King Tubby... I play it in honour of Ktadhn, who used to play Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for every single Lamplighter procession (smile) As soon as the song would start, he would IM me and say, 'A little jazz for you' We remember you, KT!!!"

Gemma should have more on Whimsy soon,

The Winter Burn 2022

On the last weekend of January, the Winter Burn took place. A spinoff event of Burn2, the art and music festival had much to see and hear. With the theme of Gingerbread Houses, some of the exhibits looked a little like leftover Christmas decorations. But it was still quite an original event. Yours truly was there, and took some photos.

Winter Burn 2020: Magic!

Opening 5:00pm SLT, Friday 31 January 2020  BURN2, Deep Hole

Hear ye, hear ye! We welcome our magical friends,  for every being who entereth herein shall be seen as magic!  There are no bystanders, no mere observers!  Ye shall be part of the spectacle on the playa.
About Magic! Normally, Deep Hole consists of a lonely, desolate little desert town, an echo of Gerlach, Nevada, with a road that leads to the playa. This playa is a replication of a long ago dried up lake bed, with mountains surrounding. The environment is hostile, barren and dry, supporting little animal or plant life. However...

At times, there is a kind of desert magic that comes over the playa. A sudden unexpected rainstorm causes a flash flood, followed by a sudden carpeting of brilliantly coloured blooms. Almost as quickly, insects and birds, other desert wildlife arrive to take advantage of the available water before it all disappears.

Likewise, this virtual playa has its own magic and we've invited the hidden peoples of SL, from magical communities of all corners of the grid. The air has changed, and strangely fanciful flora - and some fauna - have taken hold on the dust. You'll see coloured lights glowing in the mist, beckoning to you to come closer and see the wondrous creations of magic folk. You are meant to explore, learn about, interact, and even play on these creations you’ll discover.

Some creative Burner souls set up a welcome area, a transition from the dusty lonely little town into a richly coloured and ethereal world, a new dimension of the playa, ready to welcome and embrace those who came to build, share music, and explore this world of wonder, follow pathways and pause to sit and ponder in lighted waystops. The art and music and celebration of wondrous realms will fill this place for a weekend, only to disappear into the mists soon after, then evaporate, chased away by barren emptiness of the desert once again.

So, while it exists - in the days of 31 January through 2 February - come and experience the shared magic of this Winter Burn!

This event is a unique collaboration, with Burn2 and members of magical communities from across the grid. We are deeply honoured and excited to say that Elven Forest, Faery Crossing, the Merfolk of Uhre, Safe Waters Foundation and Sylvhara are among the communities represented at the event as artists and

performers, and what they bring only adds to the delightful ambiance you will see, hear and feel around the playa. The Lamplighters will help to open the event with a walk-on from the Welcome Area to the main stage. Artists and builders have been hard at work creating their concepts of the theme.  A full schedule of performers - live singers, group acts and DJs will be playing, from opening on Friday all the way through to after the final Burn on Sunday evening. We always appreciate performers who may not have signed up but are interested in being “on standby.” Oh, yes… There will be a Burn!  Mark Your Calendar and SHARE the News! We look forward to welcoming Home Burners and community, to explore the builds and enjoy the music that will fill the air over the playa.

You can find the full performance schedule on the BURN2 Calendar, with more information about the event here: https://www.burn2.org/magic-2020/.  <

Burn2 Festival Ends

The Burn2 art and music festival is now over. Over the weekend, the Burning of the Man and the Temple Burn (above) took place. The events are over, but the sims will be up for another day or two. For those who want one more look, or haven't been there yet, head over and see the exhibits before the artists clean them up and "leave no trace."

Burn2: "Seasonal Perceptions" Brings Snow and Dust Storms to January

The Winter Burn festival, the Burn2 spinoff event for the cold months of the year, "Seasonal Perceptions," is over. The builds however will be up for a few more days. And there are some particularly fancy ones. Klaus Bereznyak was there, and writes about the art exhibits and other things about the event.

A Busy Weekend

Quite a bit happened this weekend. The 2019 Winter Burn "Seasonal Perceptions" (pictured above) took place from Friday to Sunday. The Roma community's January festival, Paganalia, took place over Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Caledon Oxbridge University held it's tenth anniversary ball. Sunday had an event at the CDS community at their Venus Cafe. Later in the day, Veterans Isle hosted a benefit concert for Homes For Our Troops.

More about these events later this week.

Press Release: Winter Burn 2019 - Seasonal Perceptions

Opening 6:00pm SLT, Friday 25 January 2019
BURN2, Deep Hole

Seasonal Perceptions: Theme for Burn2’s Winter Burn Event
Perception -- the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.

This is particularly important as we move through the seasons... especially the holidays.  However, our perceptions are affected by our environment... the things and people around us.  Even the weather!  At this time of year, one person might be shoveling the snow off his driveway while another might spend the day surfing the waves off the coast of Australia!

But it is also influenced by our imaginations.  Michael Whelan, a world-renowned artist, once did a painting of his young daughter who loved playing in the sandbox.  What he did differently is depict his daughter wearing a spacesuit and playing in a lunar sandbox!

Our perceptions ares a driving force in how we interact with the world around us.  But imagination is also a strong influencer.  Given all that, how would you perceive the seasons?  Would you reflect the environment around you... or imagine something completely off the wall and different?  Show us your "Seasonal Perceptions!"

Lamplighters will help to open the event with a walk-on from the Welcome Area to the main stage.
Artists and builders are invited to sign up for a plot (limited number, first come first served). We also have a collaborative build area set aside for Burners who would like to join a team with other creatives to build to theme. Signup is available at https://burn2.org/seasonalperceptions-buildsignup. On this form, one can indicate interest in the collaborative team or a single plot. There is also an opt-in available to be part of the Ten Principles Hunt if signing up for a single plot.

As for performers - live singers, group acts and DJs - watch for the self-signup to play at Burn2 in the next few days. If you know you are interested, you can contact Cuga Rajal inworld, until the signup sheet is available.

The Weather Machine will have its place at the center of the playa, an interactive build gleefully doomed to burn!

Mark Your Calendar and SHARE the News!

We look forward to welcoming Home Burners and community, to explore the builds and enjoy the music that will fill the air over the playa. The BURN2 Calendar at http://www.burn2.org/calendar will fill up quickly as performers sign up.

Burn2 "Man Burn" Today, A Look at "Lost in Space"

Today marks the high point of the Burn2 festival: the "Man Burn." It takes place at 10AM SL time and once more 4PM SL time. Tomorrow marks the last events, including the Temple Burn, which is also 10AM and 4PM. Besides these two, be sure to look for dances, DRUM, and other events. And of course, all of those exhibits.

The Man: Burning Man-Time Machine (151/109/24)

The Temple: Burning Man-Dont Panic (161/39/24)

One of the most fun exhibits that I came across was the "Lost in
Space" one. Made by Lillithslair (Lillith LoneRaven) and located at Electric Sheep (186/72/24), stepping inside, clicking in "Mission Control," one can take a trip to Earth orbit, or perhaps to the outer solar system, or maybe to a crystal world where you can take home a few samples for a souvenir.

Of course just going in space in regular clothes is not always a good idea. Click on "Space Suits" on the panel to get a suit that gives you some protection from hostile environments (protection against hard vacuum is limited with hands and other body parts unprotected). Clicking on "Space Ships" will give you a small ship that can get you about short distances, or perhaps a longer journey with some assistance. For the automated tour, turn off any AOs, walk inside the large metal tube, and sit on the poseball (after wearing a suit or getting in a mini-spaceship).

Press Release: Burn 2 Oct 19-28

As we do every year, we invited artists and creatives to get their plots to create homes and art installations in this virtual temporary city on five sims, with a challenge to build to a science fiction flavoured theme, “I, Robot,” within the framework of the Ten Principles of Burning Man and a set of build guidelines.

The response from the community has been marvelously varied. Some are built around the Three Laws of Robotics as set out by Isaac Asimov. Others explore ideas about the relationship between humans and AI, or express very real fears and doubts about the future. There are still others that are simply funny and fun to explore. And not the least among these are the simple camps for those who want to merely sit a spell, relax  and soak in the tunes in the air.

This year, we invite you to experience art that examines how it feels to live in a world filled with robots. When you step foot onto the dusty playa, you are no longer a mere bystander but a part of the spectacle that is I, Robot.

SHARE the News and Plan to Come!

We look forward to welcoming Home Burners and community. Experience Burn2 once again, walk through the gate, and if you are a virgin Burner, ring the bell! Follow the Lamplighters on their twice-daily processions; visit the Rangers station, view the Man and pause to reflect in the Temple. Wander, explore, climb, interact. Visit the three stages with music to soothe, inspire, excite and incite to dance. You will be surrounded with art and music, and generous Burners inviting you to participate.

Burn2: Getting The Burning Man Alight

The Burn2 art and music festival reached it's high point over the weekend with the Temple Burn, and the signature event, the burning of "The Man." Klaus Bereznyak was there, and watched the rangers, lamplighters set things up for the burn as the onlookers gathered.
