Burn2 Festival Ends, Sims Still Up For Now

 

 

 This weekend was the high point, and the final two days of the Burn2 art and music festival. Saturday was the burning of "The Man," which took place just after Noon SL time. The wooden build burned, and collapsed to the ground, followed by the Burners going over and dancing over the embers. 

This was followed on Sunday with the Temple Burn. Starting at Noon, various prayers were read as they burned in the censor, "Peace & Love for the World, which we live in." After a half hour, it too began going up in flames. Like "The Man," once the temple's ashes started to cool, the Burners paraded and danced around the remains. Someone would post a short video of the burn (link).

 

 

But Burn2 is about much more than the burning of it's two most important structures. The twelve sims have numerous builds, some quaint, some very well done, and some that show a lot of imagination. 

The sims should be up for a few more days, though some of the camps will likely be taken up early, allowing more people to see them before most of the sims fade back into the virtual nether, leaving only the permanent Burning Man - Deep Hole. But for those who missed it, there are a few spinoff events across the year.

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy at the Burn2 art and music festival. While working part of the time as one of the Rangers, when off-duty she's been looking around at the exhibits and events. So what did she think?

The Burning of The Man And The Temple Burn

 

The Burn2 festival is now over. But before it ended the main events took place. On Saturday, the Burning of the Man took place. Sunday, the final day of the Burn, came the Temple Burn. Gemma Cleanslate was there, and took a few pictures.

Weekend in Brief

 

Quite a bit happened this weekend in Second Life. The last official events of Burn2 took place, including the Burning of The Man (above) on Saturday October 17 and the Temple Burn on Sunday October 18. Also on Saturday, the annual "Scare Me Silly" Halloween-themed event by Team Diabetes began. On Sunday was the Tenth Anniversary party of Team Firestorm. The weekend would also see events for the Relay for Life's "Making Strides."

Burn2 Festival Ends

The Burn2 art and music festival is now over. Over the weekend, the Burning of the Man and the Temple Burn (above) took place. The events are over, but the sims will be up for another day or two. For those who want one more look, or haven't been there yet, head over and see the exhibits before the artists clean them up and "leave no trace."

Chouchou Sim Reportedly To Close

Some sad news. According to New World Notes, the Chouchou sim will reportedly be closing soon. Made by two Japanese musicians who named it after their band, they stated the sim would close this Friday or any day afterwards. The two musicians, vocalist Juliet Heberle and composer Arabesque Choche, had met in Second Life, and performed there in numerous events without having met each other in real life. But eventually the couple did meet for real, married, and have a child. While they have been expanding their audience over the Internet, they cut back on their performances in the virtual world.

The scenery of Chouchou, and it's sister sim Chouchou V, was artistically beautiful. When I arrived, all was night and everyone around were black silhouettes. The soft ambient music added to the atmosphere. Visiting later, night had turned to day, first a cloudy white sky, then a clearer blue one. Besides the ground area with a few features such as a piano in the water, a half-sunken birdcage, and ladder leading up to nowhere, clicking on the last one led to two places in the sky. These were Islamey, a Japanese temple with cherry blossom trees, and Mememto, a large cathedral. There was a cinematic hud one could touch and receive, which made the screen look like a movie theater projection.

It was Kira Balestra, a fan of the sim, whom had told Hamlet Au that the sim was set to close. She appealed in the Second Life forums for the sim to be saved, which received numerous fan pictures.

By all means, visit the place before it's gone.

The Borobudur Temple

After a short vacation, Newser reporter Marcel Mosswood is back in business. Her latest article is about the Borobudur temple. Located in the Gentility Land sim, Borobudur is a detailed replica of the world's largest Buddhist temple, built around 800 AD and located in central Java, Indonesia. Marcel had the chance to interview Aryluke, the person behind this great build.

Burn2 "Man Burn" Today, A Look at "Lost in Space"

Today marks the high point of the Burn2 festival: the "Man Burn." It takes place at 10AM SL time and once more 4PM SL time. Tomorrow marks the last events, including the Temple Burn, which is also 10AM and 4PM. Besides these two, be sure to look for dances, DRUM, and other events. And of course, all of those exhibits.

The Man: Burning Man-Time Machine (151/109/24)

The Temple: Burning Man-Dont Panic (161/39/24)

One of the most fun exhibits that I came across was the "Lost in
Space" one. Made by Lillithslair (Lillith LoneRaven) and located at Electric Sheep (186/72/24), stepping inside, clicking in "Mission Control," one can take a trip to Earth orbit, or perhaps to the outer solar system, or maybe to a crystal world where you can take home a few samples for a souvenir.

Of course just going in space in regular clothes is not always a good idea. Click on "Space Suits" on the panel to get a suit that gives you some protection from hostile environments (protection against hard vacuum is limited with hands and other body parts unprotected). Clicking on "Space Ships" will give you a small ship that can get you about short distances, or perhaps a longer journey with some assistance. For the automated tour, turn off any AOs, walk inside the large metal tube, and sit on the poseball (after wearing a suit or getting in a mini-spaceship).

Press Release: Burn 2 Oct 19-28

As we do every year, we invited artists and creatives to get their plots to create homes and art installations in this virtual temporary city on five sims, with a challenge to build to a science fiction flavoured theme, “I, Robot,” within the framework of the Ten Principles of Burning Man and a set of build guidelines.

The response from the community has been marvelously varied. Some are built around the Three Laws of Robotics as set out by Isaac Asimov. Others explore ideas about the relationship between humans and AI, or express very real fears and doubts about the future. There are still others that are simply funny and fun to explore. And not the least among these are the simple camps for those who want to merely sit a spell, relax  and soak in the tunes in the air.

This year, we invite you to experience art that examines how it feels to live in a world filled with robots. When you step foot onto the dusty playa, you are no longer a mere bystander but a part of the spectacle that is I, Robot.

Burn2: Burning of the Man Today

The high point of the Burn2 art and music festival, the Burning of the Man, or the "Man Burn," will take place at 11AM SL time and 5PM SL time.

On Sunday tomorrow, the Temple Burn will take place also at 11AM and 5PM SL time.

The entrance to the festival is at Deep Hole (117/18/25). Head to where most of the avatars are, but stay clear of the structure itself.

Last month, the annual Burn2 art and music festival took place across Second Life. The second of the main events, the Temple Burn, would take place on it's last day: Sunday October 23. The Second Life Newser was there, and took a number of pictures.

Forest of Dreams

Gemma Cleanslate recently took a look at a picturesque area in Second Life called the "Forest of Dreams." Located in the Isle of Peace sim, the area was build by Nessa Zamora (Noralie78 Resident). Looking like a setting for a Medieval Fantasy story, the place was well designed, and offers much to see.

Brahma Yoga Class Still Going On In Second Life

It's been two years since Pramiil Magne, the Guru of the Brahma Yoga class inworld, departed Second Life. For many groups, it's often the beginning of the end when their leader leaves. But Brahma Yoga continues to thrive at it's location at Airtol Hill. Grease Coakes recently went to the location to talk to it's new leader Stjohn Noyes and a few others about how they remember Pramiil, how they've been since joining the group, and more.

A Dream of Snow

While I was checking for more winter sports venues I came across a very lovely sim you should explore. It is called "Yuki No Yumi ... A Dream of Snow." The region is a natural Japanese winter setting created by Jac Mornington. It is elegantly beautiful, incorporating the mountains, valleys, brooks, and seas  enveloped in snow. Delicate bridges connect the hillocks that are surrounded by running streams. Several lovely typical Japanese homes fully decorated sit in an area near the center of the region. 

 

While I was there some lovely Japanese avatars were wandering through and enhanced the beauty of the area. As you follow along the paths you will be charmed by discoveries, a hot spring, where you can relax, a chair overlooking a pond inhabited by a duck family. an ice covered pond where majestic cranes stand. I passed a stag watching over his family while they visited a feeding station. 

 

High on a hill there are temple ruins and below a small buddhist worship temple stands along the entrance road. The view is so majestic with waters and mountains it is difficult to find the edges of the sim. It seems to go on and on which adds to the beauty. Take a walk and relish the tranquility, a good way to start the new year.

Burn2: The Temple Burn

Burn2 is over. Sunday's Temple Burn marked the final day of the festivities, and as the building was burned for the final time came the last of the events. After that, there would be no more events, although the exhibits were up for a few more days. Gemma had a few pictures of the event, which was quite a show.

This weekend marks the climax of the Burn2 festival, with the burning of "The Man" today, and the Temple Burn tomorrow on Sunday.

The times "The Man" will burn today are 4AM SL time (Australia/Asia), 12 Noon (Europe), and 8PM (Americas)

Burn2 is Ready

It is finally here! The day before the opening of Burn2 in SL!   http://burn2.org/about  for those unfamiliar with the burn.  Thursday, the press crowded the playa taking pictures and looking at everything, meeting the main people involved in all  the work that has been going on behind the scenes and on the playa itself. 

 

Emcee Widget, regional representative was available at the communications area, as were Neeks Karu (left), Buttermilk Panacek, Jeanbaptiste of the Lamplighters, Barbs Kurka of performance, and more. I took some pictures of amazing sights you will see when you arrive at the gate and enter the playa. Ub Yifi has some permanent greeters in place LOL. The real greeters will be there too with information on where to go and what to do. 

I can finally show some of the marvelous creations awaiting you. The Guru Stage is magnificent. The Temple is lovely. The man stands tall. Neeks Karu had a lot to do with the building and overseeing or happenings on the playa every day during the building.  So much work went into the preparation. Everyone is to be thanked when you see them on the playa!

On Sunday, the Burn2 festival had it's grand finale, the Temple Burn. Numerous residents gathered, and were there to see the work of art, the product of hours of work, go up in virtual flames.

Burn2 - The Temple

Gemma Cleanslate has been very busy behind the scenes at the Burn2 festival. But she finally found time to write something. Today, she reports on the Burn2 temple. Built by SL artist & jeweler Damanious Theta, the temple itself is a work of art, symbolizing the themes of the burn. But as a structure, it is temporary. All are invited to see it before Sunday when the temple burn takes place.
