SL Video: "One Last Look at Mario2 Helstein’s M2D Region"

From Erik Mondrian on December 28, 2022, "Renowned for his particle effects and dynamic digital sculptures, Mario2 Helstein [@m2dchannel249] is an extraordinary visual artist who since 2010 has been building 3D art installations and performing virtual light shows [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDKXX...], starting in Second Life and later in Sansar as well [https://www.virtuality.blog/m2d-proje...]. He has also sold many of his creations through his M2D brand (Mario2 Design).

"Sadly, Mario recently announced his retirement, closing his SL store and saying that he would no longer be producing new work or performing (at least not for now). On December 11, 2022, as part of his M2D Light Week event (a “Light & Sound Experience”), he gave the last of several very well-attended farewell shows [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv5CN...], which were beautifully captured by @AkikoKinoshi

"The flythrough video here is one that I shot at the M2D region on December 23, the day before everything was erased. My deepest appreciation to Mario for re-opening the region for me so that I could make this video—and I wish him the best in wherever life takes him next!"

Moya, The Artist and Location

One artist who's been part of Second Life for eleven years is Patrick Moya (Moya Janus). A friendly man, Moya was happy to take Gemma Cleanslate on a tour of his four-sim area. Moya is known for his light-hearted work, often putting his likeness in it. And there's much of it to be seen of many varieties, both at his sim and other places on the Grid. Gemma was impressed, calling him one of the most interesting people she met in Second Life.

LEA Sims Go Offline

Despite efforts to save the Linden Endowment of the Arts or bring it back in another name, the LEA sims, which were due to close soon after August 31, went offline yesterday on Wednesday September 3.

Checking the LEA group, there was one last post from the Committee.

Linden Endowment for the Arts in its current form comes to an end on August 31st and the remaining sims will be taken offline by Linden Labs on September 1st.

We would like to thank all those who came to support this program and the many artists who took part in it as Artists in Residence,  Core grant holders or as collaborators with others in the many projects hosted on the LEA regions or took advantage of the Sandbox .  The creativity demonstrated by the artists of Second Life at LEA was truly extraordinary and made the program a huge success from its inception in 2011.

We hope that Linden Labs will institute a new program to support the Arts in Second Life in the near future.

Thank you everyone

The LEA Committee
PatriciaAnne Daviau, Joan Bree Balogh, Lapiscean Liberty , Jayjay Zifanwe, Corcosman Voom, TheDove Rhode

There were a number of comments in both the Second Life LEA group posts and the Facebook LEA group posts. Among them was one illustration (left) and the following comments:

"The LEA was never easy to negotiate or to manage. But maybe this is a reflection of the diverse ungovernable minds involved in this extraordinary project and the historic convergence of artists and audience from all over the Earth. Congratulations to this mind bending media (social, virtual) art movement and to the convergence of a peak artistic moment in a video game world."

Over the years, the Linden Endowment of the Arts has featured hundreds of art exhibits. Some of them the Newser has featured in it's articles. Hopefully there will be another organization that takes the place of the LEA. But such a group would have a tough act to follow.

Chouchou Sim Reportedly To Close

Some sad news. According to New World Notes, the Chouchou sim will reportedly be closing soon. Made by two Japanese musicians who named it after their band, they stated the sim would close this Friday or any day afterwards. The two musicians, vocalist Juliet Heberle and composer Arabesque Choche, had met in Second Life, and performed there in numerous events without having met each other in real life. But eventually the couple did meet for real, married, and have a child. While they have been expanding their audience over the Internet, they cut back on their performances in the virtual world.

The scenery of Chouchou, and it's sister sim Chouchou V, was artistically beautiful. When I arrived, all was night and everyone around were black silhouettes. The soft ambient music added to the atmosphere. Visiting later, night had turned to day, first a cloudy white sky, then a clearer blue one. Besides the ground area with a few features such as a piano in the water, a half-sunken birdcage, and ladder leading up to nowhere, clicking on the last one led to two places in the sky. These were Islamey, a Japanese temple with cherry blossom trees, and Mememto, a large cathedral. There was a cinematic hud one could touch and receive, which made the screen look like a movie theater projection.

It was Kira Balestra, a fan of the sim, whom had told Hamlet Au that the sim was set to close. She appealed in the Second Life forums for the sim to be saved, which received numerous fan pictures.

By all means, visit the place before it's gone.

Interview with Treacle Darlandes

Treacle Darlandes is a woman of many talents in Second Life. She is known for her artwork and exhibitions, such as those at the Musical Sculpture Gallery mentioned earlier this week in the Newser. But she is particularly proud of her "Walk of Art." She also helps out newcomers to Second Life with her New Resident Island. Deaflegacy recently met up with her, and had questions about these, and more.

The Moon Stew Cafe

Klaus Bereznyak has written about a number of locations in Second Life. This story is about one of his, the Moon Stew Cafe. Built with the help of  Pearl Grey (Pearlgrey Resident) Klaus called the place in the mainland sim of Patagonia a "new roadside cafe ... inspired by a jazz musician and a recipe." So what is the place like?

Raglan Shire Art Walk Does it Again

After a short break due to real-life, Klaus Bereznyak is back on the scene. Hearing about the ArtWalk in the Raglan Shire community, he decided to pay it a visit. This event attracts artists not just from the local tinies, whom have some talented folk in their own right, but from all over Second Life. There's quite a bit of photography, paintings, sculptures, and more.

Raglan Shire Artwalk Starts Today

Raglan Shire is known for many things. It's best known for it's fun-loving community of "tinies," but that is not all. They have events every month. And the best known of their annual events is the Raglan Shire Artwalk. This art festival is open not only to local artists, but any across Second Life whether tiny or "biggie," as they call full-sized avatars.

This year, more than 150 artists across the Grid are taking part in the Artwalk. Across four sims, one will find paintings, drawings, photography, SL screenshots, digital art, 3D sculptures, and other examples of art. The event goes on for five weeks from Sunday May 13th until Sunday June 17th. The event is a "non-judged exhibition," so there are no prizes. Some of the art may be for sale, but the event is aimed at giving artists a chance to show off their talent.

For more info go here: https://sites.google.com/view/raglanshireartwalk/home

If you have questions contact karmagirl Avro, Kayak Kuu, Shadow Marlin or RaglanShireArtwalk Resident.

There were several locations marked as LandMarks, though the first area for 2D art was at

Virtual Art Project Causes Crash by Inventory Overload

Some of us use quite a few attachments for fancy outfits. And at parties we'll engage in the consumption of scripted food to make it look more like a real life event. But how many of us thought about doing what Mijn Seoung (Martina Menegon), a performance artist in real life and Second Life, recently attempted. She tried attaching everything she had in her inventory to her avatar.

As one can see in this video, early on in the process her avatar was looking less than comfortable. As things went on, she ended up with thousands of objects and eventually "overloading the system" that finally caused her to crash. Unfortunately, she finds that her stunt has rendered her unable to get on.

I was a Second Life resident for almost 10 years, and the only reason I am using the past tense is because I somehow destroyed my poor virtual me for an art project: I wanted to record the result of me attaching everything I owned in Second Life to my avatar (thousands of different hair styles and colors, clothes, shoes, animations, furniture, houses, etc.). I somehow overloaded the system and my avatar started changing, then transformed into a white cloud, and then the software crashed. Since then, whenever I try to open Second Life, the app crashes. I tried some solutions I found online but nothing worked. I will try to contact the Linden Lab soon, because I have to admit, I miss being in Second Life.

For the full story, read Hamlet Au's article on this noteworthy test of Second Life's tolerances as part of artistic expression. To my knowledge, sorry to say Mijin is still unable to log on and could use some advice on what to do. No doubt she's tried calling the Lab for help, though as Hamlet put it, "Not sure if Linden Lab tech support has a 'Performance art' category in its tracking system."

SL Video" Gravity Is A Mistake"

Click here if the video fails to play

By Haveit Neox on June 6, "Eupalinos Ugajin's 'Gravity is a Mistake' is a full sim exhibit in the virtual world of Second Life®. His sim and artwork fill the stage for a levitating experience. Included are guest artists whose pieces dot the environment. Always highly scripted, one never knows in what circumstance they will find themselves next, except for one, they will quickly discover that gravity is a mistake.

"The installation continues till the end of June 2016 on the LEA21 sim in Second Life®

"If I am able to get a full list of the participating artists, I'll post them here. As the exhibit is up for three more weeks, Eupalinos may welcome yet more artists to add their work, in which case the list grows."

Cica Ghost's "Arachnid "

After some time doing some videos, Becky Shamen is back with another art exhibition review. Her latest exploration took her to the Weeds sim, where Second Life artist Cica Ghost has her newest artistic exhibit: "Arachnid." The latest in a line of Cica's exhibits which go back to 2012, it's aptly named with webs and spiders. So what did Becky think of the work?

"Roots" by Cica Ghost

Recently Becky Shamen checked out the "Roots" build at the Night Atoll sim. Designed and built by Cica Ghost, who has done a number of exhibits over the past few years, Becky described the area as having a quite organic and fertile look, so well done one can almost smell the richness of the dirt in the air.

2015 Skin Burn This Saturday

This Saturday November 7, the "Skin Burn" will be taking place. "The BURN2 Skin Burn is a decompression event that features a "encore" Man Burn, usually 1-2 weeks after the closing of the annual BURN2 event held in late October. We Burn the Man again, with everyone in their best low-lag form. We are challenged to get wildly creative with it, too! We will do the Skin Burn twice on Saturday the 7th of November, at 10:00am SLT and at 6:00pm SLT. Check-in will open at 8:30am SLT for the 10am Burn, and again at 4:30pm SLT for the 6pm Burn. "

The exact location will be given out in the Burningman 2.0 group. Though it's a safe bet it will be taking place somewhere in the six sims of this year's Burn2 festival. While prim human avatars are preferred, it seems they're not the only ones allowed, "While we urge you to use a classic avatar to help your fellow Burners have a great Burn experience, we do have a very few exceptions for petite mesh avatars, Dinkie and Tiny avatars, and some furry avatars."
