Kondor’s Art CafĂ©

Netera Landar recently went to the grand opening of a new exhibition at Kondor’s Art Cafe, located at Kondor’s Art Center. She also viewed Hermes Kondor's art collection, as well as getting a chance to talk to the artist, and heard just what was meant by the location being an "art cafe."

Commentary: A.I. Art - Is It Stealing Your Art?

One of the burning issues in both the real world and online is Artificial Intelligence, or AI. There have been worries it will eventually destroy the world, and more recently Amazon announced it will be replacing some jobs with AI programs. On the Internet, there's been a big debate about the creations of AI programs: AI art. Some love it, Others hate it. Nydia Tungsten recently had a few things to say on the matter.

SL Video: "Watch The World"

(Click here if the video does not play)

By Robbie Dingo, posted by "Sharefestival" on April 2008, "(Duration 4'17") 'Frameless heads on nameless walls, with eyes that watch the world and can't forget - like the strangers that you've met'. [Don McLean]. Ever looked at your favorite painting and wished you could wander inside, to look at it from different perspectives? Spend a single day in one of mine, from early sunrise on a new day, to dusk when lights come on in cosy homes; through a peaceful night, till morning. Shot on location in Second Life then post-produced, this was an idea I had a while ago. The Sim in this work was on temporary loan so it's all been swept away now, leaving only the film behind. It was always intended however that the video would be the end product, not the build. This work is dedicated to the many weird and very wonderful strangers from around the globe I have met, but have never really met."

SL Video: "Second Life Destinations - Moya Land"

(Click here if the video fails to play)

From Draxtor Despres for Second Life on July 31, "Patrick Moya is a French contemporary artist keen on expressing himself through the diffusion and transformation of his name and image. Many examples of his colorful work can be found at his Second Life galleries including photography, painting, and sculpture."

* * * * *

Since its beginning, artists have found Second Life to be a means of expression - from installations and exhibits like Bryn Oh’s work, to galleries and fundraisers like the Raglan Shire Artwalk  - art has always been a key element of the Second Life Community.

With recent conversations about the ending of the initial iteration of the LEA, and what may be soon to follow in its spirit, it is clear that not only is art in Second Life important to artists, but it is also important to the community.

Acclaimed French artist, Patrick Moya (Moya Janus in Second Life) has an impressive and expansive breadth of work that spans over 40 years, and includes dolls designed for UNICEF, ceramic sculptures, video and projection art, and the work he’s done in Second Life at “Moya Land.”

Moya Land is a space in which he says he can realise a dream - to be a character who lives inside of his own work. To find out more about Moya Land and the artist, watch this Destination video and login to check out the Moya Galleries in Second Life. If you do not speak French, be sure to turn on closed captioning to English.

Press Release: DanCoyote’s 12-Year Retrospective Exhibition

2.5 miles of Virtual Art by DC Spensley

Saturday, September 22, 2018, (Second Life, LEA 27)

San Francisco artist, DC Spensley, will premiere a 4+ kilometer-tall, 40-level, 100-artwork exhibition, in an expansive retrospective of his work in the social, virtual world of Second Life. Featured in the exhibition is DC’s avatar, DanCoyote Antonelli, responsible for twelve years of virtual artworks and performances that have been critically recognized and widely emulated.

DC’s largest artwork, and perhaps the largest in Second Life history, is the Tower of Light – a 4.5 kilometer monolith currently on display at LEA 27. DC Spensley is also the creator and artistic director of the world’s first virtual, aerial dance company – the ZEROG SkyDancers. Linden Lab original, John “Pathfinder” Lester (AKA Pathfinder Linden), compared this genre-expanding, three-dimensional dance to Cirque Du Soleil changing the circus forever. In all his work, DC Spensley, and DanCoyote, have been driven to create art installations and theater productions that are intentionally native to the virtual world, a thesis which DC calls Hyperformalism.

Wagner James Au (AKA Hamlet Linden) in his seminal book, “The Making of Second Life”, has recognized DC Spensley for the advancement of virtual art. DC ’s work has been referenced in mainstream press, including The New York Times, Reuters, Step by Step Design, and Fibreculture Journal, as well in Europe, where DC has a strong following and is referenced in a number of European academic books and art journals. Additional recognition includes New Media venues such as Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), ZERO1 Biennial (San Jose, CA), Digital Electronic Arts Festival - DEAF (Rotterdam, Netherlands), and the Frye Museum (Seattle, WA). DC won a UNESCO award for virtual architecture in 2007. He has also written extensively about new media art theory focused on virtual worlds in Arts 21 and other publications.

About DanCoyote Antonelli:
The avatar DanCoyote Antonelli, as the proxy for David “DC” Spensley in the virtual world of Second Life, was derived from Cervantes’ Don Quixote, in honor of a coyote that Joseph Beuys lived with for a time at the RenĂ© Block Gallery in New York during his 1974 action, “I like America and America Likes Me”. Apparently nobody realized how close Beuys and the coyote had become until DanCoyote was born.

"Roots" by Cica Ghost

Recently Becky Shamen checked out the "Roots" build at the Night Atoll sim. Designed and built by Cica Ghost, who has done a number of exhibits over the past few years, Becky described the area as having a quite organic and fertile look, so well done one can almost smell the richness of the dirt in the air.
