Team Sunbeamer Group Photo

On Tuesday June 14, some of the Relay's Team Sunbeamers met up for their annual post-Relay Weekend group photo, in front of the camp at RFL Advocacy. Not everyone could make it, such as Cynthia Farshore, Shockwave Yareach, and Mattie Carlton. And some were in Bid Me and Relay avatar challenge looks. But it's a picture for the Sunbeamer books.

A Few Halloween Happenings

It's still early in October, but there are plenty of Halloween-related things to do in Second Life. For those who like shopping most of all, there's the "Shop and Hop" going on, with ten sims of stores to see and buy from.

Come celebrate Halloween with your favorite Second Life Creators. With sales galore and gifts for everyone! The event will run from October 1st to 31st, 2021.

The Destinations Guide had a list of the sims. On the Linden blog, the post about the shopping event had a list of participating sellers with a SLURL next to each one. Or you can just head here: Tinseled (154/128/52)

There's also some haunted areas to visit. One featured in Second Life Destinations was "Hauntings."

Moody, ghostly, creepy, and fun, Hauntings is another delightful venue in Old Town. Once a charming and peaceful spot in rural America, when the events began happening, folks moved away. No cars stopped at the motel; the farm lies abandoned. What happened here? What went on in that house? No-one knows. But once a year, the spirits of those who were innocent walk, looking for treats.

To get to this spooky place, head over to Adagio Breeze (199/59/3603). The place is a little scary, though not as nerve wracking as some places. Oh, and don't worry about the giant bat, too much.

For those in the mood for a hunt to get lots of prizes, one place to go is the Furry Fashion Halloween area. They have one every year. This year, one looks around a foggy fantasy-themed place, with a few signs of witches and pirates, for dragon eggs. There are thirty to be found, as well as a few decoys that give nothing. Flying is turned off, but all places can be reached by jumping, "think jump puzzles from Guild Wars2 (Blame Fortunas and Minty for that!)."

It is recommended that you set your environment to foggy or Midnight, and people are asked not to give hints to others. The entrance, which has some backstory, is at Furry (83/115/4007).

Oh, and Furry Fashion has a Halloween photo contest. All pictures have to be taken in the Halloween area, "Submissions must be put in notecard form into the contest application box by the ghost ship in the Halloween area - Photos must be full perm or linked to your twitter/flickr. Don't forget to add your legacy SL name so we know who you are!" You can send up to five pictures, and the contest lasts until November 3. First prize is 5000 Lindens, with 2500L for second, and 1000L for third.

Stay tuned for more reports of Halloween locations and events.

EOTB: "Winter Photo Challenge"

In the official blog, Tara Linden announced a "Winter Photo Challenge."

It's time for another photo challenge! Whether you're going for festive or cozy, share a picture of your escapades in one of your favorite winter regions. It can be a solo or group shot, and let us know the name of the region.

Strawberry and I took the photo above at Silent Night. It's absolutely gorgeous but I was not prepared for the cold, as you can see from our frosty breath. I'm also probably about to trip over my untied shoelaces.

Will your pic be silly or dramatic? Featuring a snowman or an ice skating rink? Scope out the winter attractions soon, we can't wait to see what you get up to!

Tara didn't say where to send or post the pictures, I had to look around and after some time found the pictured posted in a thread in the Second Life forums. There is no prize money or any kind of reward being offered.

Reader Submitted: The Dragon Crew at Club Cutlass

Picture submitted by Cynthia Farshore and Shockwave Yareach. On Saturday January 19, the Epic Failure Show, sometimes called the Dragon Crew, took it's act to Club Cutlass. DJ Geerkil, the purplish dragon on the left, is usually the largest avatar when he plays music. But some of his big fans showed up, and they were big in stature as well, making him look a bit small in comparison. "Wow. You don't often see so many dragons," one of the people below commented. When someone wondered if the ceiling might buckle, Shockwave, who was around, responded with a grin, "Not MY roof." He explained when he and Cynthia were building the club, he was in charge of the roof, so he assured everyone it could accommodate the draconian passengers easily.

Press Release: 8th Annual Oscar Fashion Photo Contest

"Around the Grid," the Second Life blog published by Harper Ganeswort, Conan Bankersbox, and Jern Sternhall, has opened it's 8thAnnual Oscar Fashion Photo contest, to run from January 8 until March 5, 2017. The guaranteed prize fund for this year's contest is L$50,500, with L$25,00 going to the 1st-place winner.

"The calendar has rolled around again to January," Harper Ganesvoort said, "and so it's time for my annual question. Once again, if you received an inviration to this year's Academy Awards and the various after parties, what would you wear?

"Just as people enjoy critiquing the actors' and actresses' evening wear on the red carpet every year, and imagining ourselves wearing those clothes, we like to take a look at what our friends and acquaintances in world wear. Our annual photo contest combines the two pastimes into one, allowing
us to imagine ourselves on the red carpet in Los Angeles while the cameras of the world are on us, or on other aspects of that day for the Real Life Hollywood crowd. Second Life gives us a chance to not only talk about what we think would look good, but to demonstrate our concepts to the world through displaying the photos on Flickr and in our blogs.

"The 2017 prize fund holds steady from last year's advance,"Harper said. "First Place will receive L$25,000; Second Place L$10,000; Third Place L$7,500; and the four Honorable Mentions will receive L$2,000 each. I can't recall if there have been richer prize packages for other peoples' contests in the past, but I'm pretty sure that the OFPC's package is the biggest and most consistently awarded over its eight-year history, as well as possibly the longest running annual contest aside from the well-known beauty pageants such as Miss Virtual World. When this year's winners are paid, the total cash prizes over eight years, based on guaranteed pools, will have hit L$185,000."

Taking a look at the current technical aspects of Second Life fashion, Harper noted the increasing preference for wearable mesh body components, as opposed to the "classic" SL system bodies. "Mesh has definitely taken hold of the fashion industry with both hands. The latest advance, SL's Bento skeleton changes, is just now starting to feed into the stores. It may be too early to see much in terms of the new articulations in contest entries, but it still promises to make for wonderful new photographic opportunities, including for Second Life's artistic photography in general.

"As always, we hope that Residents will help us spread the word, and we wish the entrants the best of luck."

Complete contest rules may be found in the official contest announcement, at http://harper-ganesvoort.com/2017/01/08/ofpc-8-announcement/

PXL Photo Contest : Examples of PXL Creations

Remember our PXL contest about whomever can make the best build using Becky Shamen's PXLs? A few readers have rewuested a few pictures of examples of what can be built from the structures. So Becky made a few examples, such as the sphere above.

Here's a small floating pyramid-shaped structure.

Builds can also include mixed elements, such as this "houseboat."

For more examples, check out these on Becky's own blog.

Now let's see what you the readers can create. The contest ends on June 1, 2015, with 5000 Lindens as the prize.

A "Strange Photo"

A reader, whom wishes to remain anonymous, sent over this "strange photo" to the left to the Newser, saying only that all questions would be handled by Marianne McCann, Bay City's number one resident, and involved with a number of events such as the Second Life Birthday and Burn2. When asked, Marianne explained she was busy and declined comment, but referred us to someone else, who would speak only on the condition of anonymity, and even then wouldn't say much, "If I had a strange photo, I surely would not be handing it out. Nope. I deny any involvement with strange photos. I know nothing. Nothing at all." When pressed, "any idea what it might be for?" the person commented, "Gosh, no idea whatsoever. I wonder if it has to do with any events coming up. Surely some sort of mystery, it would seem. ... I figure strange photos with mysterious origins. Sounds like the making of adventure to me."

So something is coming up, it seems, we just don't know where or when.

PXL Photo Contest

Recently, the Newser wrote about Becky "Sha" Shamen's real-life invention, the Pneumatic Crystal Lattice, or PXL, an idea of hers for building lightweight but strong structures capable of floating on water. Recently, she decided to offer an inworld photo contest to help spread the word about the product. Whomever can take the best picture of the most detailed example of architecture made up of PXLs gets 5000 Linden dollars.

You can get a free PXL kit at the SL Newser office in HV Community (140, 85, 25), or you can IM Becky or Editor Bixyl Shuftan for one.

The contest is scheduled to go on until June 1, 2016
