Fantasy Faire Banning AI Content

 

Content created by artificial intelligence, or AI, has been quite a controversial topic. And some days ago, the Fantasy Faire addressed the issue. They are banning all content created by AI at the festival.

 

It seems that before, content in which AI had a hand it it's creation was acceptable as long as it wasn't part of something for sale, that is, it could be used for marketing or items to decorate an area. Now, whether it's items for sale or marketing or decorations for areas, any AI-created content is banned from the Faire.

Fantasy Faire’s current (2025) stance toward Gen-AI (generative artificial intelligence) is that selling anything created with it is not allowed at the Faire. We have so far allowed its usage in marketing textures or decorations if they are not for sale, but the global situation has worsened so much during the last years that we are going to change this rule to cover everything that has been produced with the help of Gen-AI, regardless if they are for sale or not.

Starting Fantasy Faire 2026 no Gen-AI produced items are allowed anywhere within the Fairelands, whether they are for sale or not.
 

The reason given. the Fantasy Faire is about fantasy, about the magic of imagination and letting one's mind experience the magic of the imagination and creativity of others. And this is something a machine can't really duplicate, at best mimic (some would call stealing) the work of others.

 

Fantasy Faire has always been about imagination and inspiration, and the human talent in bringing your visions to life. We want to celebrate what people dream into being with their own imagination and skill sets instead of what a machine can cobble together from other people’s work. 

 

As for the writing of this article, the Fantasy Faire starts in fifteen days, on April 23.

There have been worries it will eventually destroy the world, and more recently Amazon announced it will be replacing some jobs with AI programs. Microsoft Pulls Plug on Experiment In Artificial Inteligence Quickly Gone Bad

It's a theme from science fiction that happens again and again, engineers either set out to create a fully functional artificial intelligence, or they accidentally do. And it isn't long before it spirals out of control, concluding humans are a threat and begins acting against them. But could this really happen in real life? After an experimental AI was made accessible to the public, it attracted the attention of Internet trolls. Their actions turned the chatbot from a teenage personality to one spewing hateful remarks in less than a day.

"Moral And Legal Imperatives For Sentient AI" Discussion Today, Featuring Real-Life Author Zoltan Istvan

The Turning Church online group will be hosting a discussion in Second Life early today about what should be done about artificial intelligence as it becomes smarter and more self aware. It's notable that there will be some people attending whom are known among futurists and transhumanists in real life.


Each year on December 10th, International Human Rights Day, Terasem conducts a Colloquium on the Law of Futuristic Persons. The event seeks to provide the public with informed perspectives regarding the legal rights and obligations of “futuristic persons” via VR events with expert presentations and discussions. Terasem hopes to facilitate development of “a body of law covering the rights and obligations of entities that transcend, and yet encompass, conventional conceptions of humanness.”

There will be some people there whom have made names for themselves among futurists and transhumanists, notably Zoltan Istvan, the author of "The Transhumanist Wager," a "philosophical science-fiction novel." Others include Susan Schneider and John Havens.

The discussion will be held  at Terasem (130, 175, 29), today at 10AM.

Jackson Arthur’s PDA

Grease Coakes recently interviewed Steve Jackson, often seen around Book Island, about his recent story "PDA." A science-fiction story, "PDA" is about an artificial intelligence which serves a lawyer, and over time becomes more than the simple program she was intended to be. It's a story in which writing it has taken Steve Jackson in a new direction.
