It Came From The Forums

Checking the Second Life Forums, on "How Does Your SL Look Today" on page 682 there was this post by Spiffy Voxel, which was a response to one by Ernest Deed, Spiffy expressing disappointment that the hat on the Newser's SL23B exhibit was not "a cunningly-disguised flying-saucer."

The Newser Is Approved To Be In The SL23B

We got the news last week, but wanted to wait until we received the final stage of approval, the plot of land. We got word of that yesterday, and now we can say we've "thrown our hat into the ring."

The Second Life Newser will be part of the Second Life Birthday, the SL23B.

Our plot's in SLB Beguile. The big hat's our marker until the exhibit is placed there.

So what will it be? Well, you'll see. For now, this is all we can show of the plot, at least until the opening on Thursday June 18.

Cartoon of The Day: Mushroom Hat

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. Someone had on a mushroom hat. Why this particularly odd-looking headwear? I could think of one reason. And no, it wasn't "using mushrooms to expand one's thinking."

Cartoon of The Day: The Eye Has It

Taken at Premier Wrestling. One of the audience had on a rather, unique, piece of headwear. I imagine if she asked why such an odd hat, she'd give an answer much like this.

Cartoon of The Day: Food on Their Mind

Taken at Montecito Bay. Gnoll Wife had her DJing debute, and at one point people started putting on these tall hamburger hats. How it started, I don't know. But I had an idea what it could lead to.

Cartoon of The Day: Ear Warmers

A friend in a Meeroo avatar. Not sure how he modified a pair of shorts into headwear, but it was funny.

SL Newser Is In "The Birthday"

The sims for the Second Life Birthday are now open to exhibitors. This includes the Newser. And so we're throwing our hat into the ring, so to speak. Or rather, marking the plot with my hat.

Unfortunately, that will be about the only picture from inside the SLB grounds we'll be able to show. The Lab has stated they want a news blackout of anything going on inside these sims. But we can still show maps. And since our last map picture, the sims have started to be grouped more together.

This year's Second Life Birthday lasts from Friday June 21 to July 21, a full month. The theme this year is "Elements."

The Newser Is Officially In The SL20B

The sims at the Second Life Birthday grounds, at least those for exhibits, are now open to exhibitors. Among them was the Second Life Newser, whose exhibit is being built by the talented Silvia Ametza. Instead of everyone being notified individually, exhibitors were send a spreadsheet with our locations. Ours is in the SLB Fantasy sim.

So here's our traditional "placeholder" picture, a large version of the editor's hat on the ground (or us "throwing our hat in the ring" to use an old expression). If it seems smaller than usual, Silvia had started work right away. We can't show any sneak peeks of the build once it's on the sim, nor of anyone else's exhibit even with their okay, the Lab asking us to keep things under wraps. So this will be the sole picture of the celebration grounds, at least until the day before the SL20B starts.

The SL20B goes on from Thursday June 22 to Tuesday July 11.

Cartoon of The Day: Tall Hat

Taken at Furzona. I've seen some tall hats, but this one was taller than the sim was wide. While I suppose such a hat could be worn if full of helium, it might became a small plane hazard.

At The Relay Weekend: A Hat For "The Hair"

Taken at the Steelhead Salmons camp at the Relay Weekend. Fuzzball Ortega is known for his giant hairpiece. But one wonders, was there a hat big enough for it?

It "hat" to be done.

The Newser Is In The SL19B

Good news! Despite a glitch concerning our application, the Newser is now among the exhibitors at the Second Life Nineteenth Birthday. So our proverbial hat is in the ring, or rather, our hat on the parcel.

Later on, Silvia will move it for our exhibit. But if we can, there'll be a hat placed on it somewhere.

The exhibit will be at SLB Imagination. So when it opens on Thursday June 16, come on by.

Looking Back: "Hats On" To The SL14B Newser Exhibit

From the set of the SL14B five years ago, when the exhibition grounds were under a media silence rule that severely limited the pictures that could be shown then. Builder Silvia Ametza and I were looking over the Newser's build then. I added one important detail: the fedora. All Newser exhibits have a fedora on them somewhere (when it can be arranged).

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the Blake Sea at a Safe Waters Foundation meeting. Among the mermaids and mermen there was this tiny, wearing a large hat. So it didn't take long to come up with the pun.

SL18B Opens Tomorrow

Yesterday, Tuesday June 15, the sims of the Second Life Eighteenth Birthday, which had a number of sims separated from the main group, were once again all back together. As of the writing of this article, yours truly is unable to get in. Of the exhibits I did see when I could, there were some good ones.

While no one's getting in, or is free to go into details about what's on the SLB grounds, there's still some fun chatter in the Second Life Birthday group. And at one point someone had a free gift. Epeya (Epeya2 Resident) was offering unofficial SL18B hats to anyone in the Second Life Birthday group who wanted one.

It's unknown when the exhibitors will be allowed back onto the sims. One of the moles did confirm that those in the Second Life Birthday group will be allowed early access in the Shop and Hop areas at 9AM.

The Second Life Eighteenth Birthday grounds are scheduled to open to all on Thursday June 17 at 9AM SL time. At 11AM, Patch Linden gives the opening ceremony at the Main Stage. Linden Lab would announce this in the official blog, plus give a link to the Calendar of SL18B events: (Click Here).

Sunweaver Community Goings-On

By Bixyl Shuftan

There's been some things going on in the Sunweaver community. With the Relay season having started, much of it is about Team Sunbeamers. This includes the team making Platinum rank on day one, the  "Bid Me Panda" and "Bid Me Purple" events,  and the Moon Dance (more on that later). But there's more going on.

Not long ago, the community's main club, Club Cutlass, had a night in which the double contest had seven winners instead of just two. On Wednesday February 24, it happened again.

[19:45] Jenni Greenfield: VOTING IS NOW OVER. TIME FOR TONIGHTS 'B' WINNERS. GL ALL!.
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Perri Prinz won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: LiskaBystrouska Resident won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Dusk Griswold won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Contest is over! Congrats to the following winners: Perri Prinz, LiskaBystrouska Resident, Dusk Griswold
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Spooked Dreamscape won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: RECoyote Mindes won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Zorro Wuramunga won L$83!
[19:45] [KittyKode] ContestBoard shouts: Contest is over! Congrats to the following winners: Spooked Dreamscape, RECoyote Mindes, Zorro Wuramunga
[19:45] Crystal Sabre (CrystalAmber69 Resident): Congrats !!
[19:45] Kylee Gracemount: Congratulations !
[19:45] Zorro Wuramunga: 6!
[19:45] òᴥó Mr.Fox da'Alenfey òᴥó (Spooked Dreamscape): :o
[19:45] òᴥó Mr.Fox da'Alenfey òᴥó (Spooked Dreamscape): Thanks
[19:46] Jenni Greenfield: CONGRATS TO....... ALL OF OUR WINNERS!
[19:46] LiskaBystrouska Resident: Two three-ways
[19:46] Rita Mariner: wow 3 way on males and females

So for both the men's and women's boards, it was a double triple-play that night, or a six-way depending how you look at it, and another contest for the books.

At Sunweaver Space, Snowbuns (Skylark Lefavre) was up to a bit of funnery when she rezzed a huge fedora on a friend's house, knowing it would soon be seen. She then took it down, but the friend liked it and wanted it back. So Snowy placed it where it was.

Guess one could call it "Hats off to a house, or maybe not."

A little of the good-natured funnery that goes on around the community.

The SL17B Cake Hat

In the days of the resident-run Second Life Birthday celebrations, one repeated theme was the Cake Stage. Even if it didn't look a lot like a cake, the name stuck. When Linden Lab resumed full control of the event last year, the Cake Stage tradition would be among those coming to an end. But some traditions die hard, and some openly missed "The Cake." Finally, Nance Clowes stepped in by offering an unofficial SL17B cake of sorts, or rather a cake hat. After getting permission from the Moles to put it up in the gift shop area, she announced it in the Second Life Birthday group.

CAKE CAKE CAKE. The sl17b Cake is now in the Gift Area. It comes in edible form as well as  . . Cake Hats.  of course. at SL17B Mesmerize (134,221,24)

A few residents reacted with cheers and jokes. "CAKE!!!!!!!" "Let them eat cake." "The cake is a lie! ... not."

Taking a look myself, I got a copy just by clicking on it. It came already unpacked, so there was no need to go anywhere to rezz it. It did take a few minutes to completely show due to the lag in the area. But once it did, it look pretty.

So finally, fans of the Cake Stage tradition get their cake, sort of. As mentioned, you can get it at the gift shop area in the middle of the SL17B grounds.

SL16B Sims Open to Exhibitors

Yesterday, Sunday May 26, the sims of the Second Life Birthday were open to exhibitors. The Newser, and other people applying to have exhibits at the grounds of the event celebrating Second Life's anniversary got notecards notifying them they had been accepted.

Hello and welcome to Second Life’s 16th birthday celebrations! We are thrilled to have you joining us this year! It is hard to believe that 16 years have passed since Linden Lab first opened the doors to this wonderful adventure we call Second Life. We are excited to have you bringing your building skills and creative vision to the party. This year to memorialize Second Life’s “Sweet Sixteen” we are going all out with a rock-around-the-clock extravaganza. So pull out the poodle skirts and the leather jackets and meet us for a ice cream soda at the diner because this year we are going “back to the future” and partying 1950s style.

People were asked to contact one of three moles to get invited into the Exhibitors group, and to get their plot for their build. As people were asked to mark plots with something to tell others they got it, The Newser quite literally threw it's hat into the ring, or rather our fedora.

And what will be the building of the Newser's that reflects both the 1950s and Second Life's vision? Well, you'll see. We'll show you a couple sneak peeks between now and then though.

Stay tuned.
