Fantasy Faire Opens

Yesterday, Thursday April 18 at 12 Noon SL time, the Fantasy Faire opened. Relayers, regular residents, and the core fans, the Fairelanders, could finally get in, taking in the sights, meeting and chatting with one another, and of course the shopping.

Twenty Magical Worlds? Check! 320+ Fantasy Merchants? Check! Countless Dancers, Bards, Roleplayers, Troubadours and Travel Bloggers? Check! All that's missing is YOU, and Fantasy Faire 2024 will be good to go!

The time we have been waiting for is finally here! The Mists have parted and the 2024 Fairelands are revealed. Attach the Teleportation Scroll (HUD) and you will be whisk to Fantasy Faire. Take the scenic route by arriving at Fairelands Junction and following the One Path around the 20 region estate or pop directly to the Faireland that is already pulling at your heartstings. Either way come shop, engage, and explore the 2024 Fantasy Faire,

This is a HUGE mega-event with plenty going on. Besides the picturesque scenery, there are story readings at the Literary Festival. The Children of Stories will have their Roleplay Adventures, this year the theme being "The Desert Foxes of The Sunstone Oasis."

Later in the Faire, the Fairelands Quest will take place, a game and interactive story in which you play the part of the hero/heroine, this year being "The Seven Layers of Joy" (the illustration showing several characters, a few of which look like companions from previous Quests).

There are the Jail and Bail events, hosted by the mischievous Pawlice whom can supposedly be bribed with waffles.

There will be regular shows at the Fairchylde, the Fairelands party ship. Expect events there for many hours each day, sometimes late into the night.

In a Fantasy event, other residents are sometimes an attraction in themselves, with detailed avatars and outfits, and some occasional huge dragons and giants.

And did we mention the scenery and the shopping?

The Fantasy Faire is scheduled to be going on until Sunday May 5. This is one event not to be missed.

To get there, pick one of the twenty sims, or port to Fairelands Junction (124/134/89).

Sci-Fi Expo Team Announces "Indefinite Postponement"

After several years of fundraising, one annual Relay for Life happening will be doing no more, at least for now. Yesterday on Wednesday March 1, the Sci-Fi Expo team announced the "indefinite postponement" of future events.

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the indefinite postponement of the SciFi Expo due to unforeseen circumstances that are beyond our control that are affecting members of our team. We are extremely thankful for the incredible support we have received since opening in 2017, allowing us to raise a remarkable total of US$24,620.86 for the American Cancer Society through both their Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising campaigns. This phenomenal contribution has enabled the American Cancer Society to provide invaluable resources for cancer research, treatments, and support programs, improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease.

The success of the SciFi Expo was only possible through the hard work and dedication of our team and with the support of our amazing community. We thank all of you who attended and supported the event, and apologize for any disappointment this announcement may have caused.

We strongly urge everyone to participate in the various other events the American Cancer Society of Second Life hosts throughout the year (see the links listed below). These events are great opportunities to show your support, have fun, and contribute to an important cause. Your participation and donations to these events can make a tremendous difference in the fight against cancer.

We understand the difficulty of the current situation and we thank you for your understanding and support. We hope to be able to celebrate this wonderful event with our community once again in the future. In the meantime, we wish you safety and health and remind you that we are all in this fight together, for a world without cancer.

The Sci-fi Expo took place every fall, alongside Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. It typically had music and dance events, discussions about science fiction, booths for various sci-fi groups such as roleplaying ones, plenty of shops, numerous exhibits, in it's last couple years a quest, and more.  The Newser took a closer look at the one in 2021.

As far as the Newser is aware, this announcement does not affect the schedule of the SL Fandom Con in May this year.

*Correction* Earlier the title was "Sci-Fi Con," which has been corrected (hasn't been the first time we mixed up the two names.

Home and Garden Expo Raises Over $14,700 USD

The first of this year's Relay mega-events, the Home and Garden Expo, was a success. Over the course of the Expo, more than $14,711 US dollars worth of Lindens was raised

The 2022 Home & Garden Expo closed last week with a $14,711 USD in total donations - all going to fund the mission of the American Cancer Society. With 9 regions filled with exhibitors and a stage that featured multiple performers, the Expo gives the home and garden community in Second Life a chance to fight back against cancer in their own way. This event is the longest actively running event of its kind in the history of Second Life. Under Kaerri Rae’s guidance, the Expo has experienced a resurgence of activity and interest over the years.

But Kaerri Rae will not be directing things next year. Near the conclusion, she announced she would be stepping down as the Expo's coordinator.

It is with mixed emotions that i am announcing my retirement from the Home & Garden Expo organizing team.

It has been a pleasure working with you all over the last seven years but it is time to go and do other things for me now. (like possibly even make some new stuff for my store).

Good luck and thank you all for all generosity you have shown over the years.

* * * * *

At the end of the Expo, Kaerri announced her retirement as the Home & Garden Expo’s coordinator and is ready to enjoy some much deserved personal time. “We are grateful for Kaerri’s commitment for so many years and we know that there will never be anyone quite like her,” says Stingray Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life. Each year, Kaerri worked hard to improve areas of the Expo and connect its patrons to the mission of the American Cancer Society.

Being the coordinator of an event this size is no small undertaking. It requires countless hours of planning and organizing ideas and people over the course of many months. Like all of our mega event coordinators, Kaerri volunteered her time to this community and this event for so many years, never seeming to take a break. Stingray added, “When Kaerri messaged me to tell me that she’d decided that this would be her final year as the H&G Expo Coordinator, she assured me that she’d still be involved in the future because the cause and the community mean so much to her.”

Stingray would add this comment in Discord.

As the Director of the ACS in SL, I want to thank everyone involved in the Home & Garden Expo this year, and I'd like to thank you all for helping to raise over $14k usd this year...and thank you to Kaerri for her leadership all these years. I'm sure you all have already done so in your own way, but in case you havent, feel free to send Kaerri a quick thank you for coordinating the HG Expo for so many years.

Press Release: Burn2 The Great Unknown

Opening 6:00 pm PDT/SLT, Friday October 8th, 2021

Ending Midnight PDT/SLT, Sunday, 17th of October 2021

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Burning%20Man-%20Deep%20Hole/174/32/25

Burn With Us!
BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man culture and community into the world of Second Life. It is an official Burning Man Regional, the only virtual world Regional out of more than 100 Regional groups worldwide, and the only Regional to burn the Man! This unique virtual Regional spreads the culture and 10 Principles of Burning Man year-round in the world of Second Life hosting 6+ events per year, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in October – a virtual echo of Black Rock City.

As always, we look forward to welcoming home Burners.  Enter the playa through the Gate, walk on with the Lamplighters; visit the Rangers, and check out our effigy burn. Wander, explore, climb, interact. Visit the stages, where DJs and musicians bring music to soothe, inspire, excite and incite to dance. You will be surrounded by art, music, fire and welcoming Burners! See the (continuously updated) BURN2 Calendar at https://www.burn2.org/event-calendar/ for the event’s schedule.

The Great Unknown, October 8-17th, 2021
https://www.burn2.org/burn2-events/the-great-unknown/
Building is in full swing for our October event, themed “The Great Unknown,” as Burn2 follows the same Burning Man art theme each year.  As is tradition every year, artists and creatives are invited to get their plots and create homes and art installations in our virtual temporary city.  For 2021, we have double the size of our past virtual playa with a total of 12 regions - plenty of space for seasoned and new Burners to build their art, theme camps, and even camp villages.  So collect some friends and join together to make your scene on BURN2’s virtual playa, 2021!  Yes, you can group build and make a great village or art installation come alive and share it with friends. Only a few days left until the build period closes!

This year’s theme, The Great Unknown, is Burning Man’s 2021 theme and we are presenting this as BURN2’s theme for our annual October burn at BURN2.  Did you participate in Virtual Burn Week? If yes, bring it out again to BURN2 in October. We’ll help Burners bring their 3D builds into Second Life, help campmates decompress on our Playa, and we can help you with some supplies that you can decorate as your own.  Take your virtual theme camp to another level by creating events or gatherings in your space and we can post the activity to our website in our version of the Who/What/Where Guide.  We have a large Burner community at BURN2 eager to burn with you and we are excited to see what you will bring out to the virtual Playa and share with us!  Check out more at www.burn2.org. Welcome Home!

Plot Sale
Our plot sale in its last few days! While the deadline was the 29th of September, we are extending it through Sunday, October 3rd. Burn2’s plot sale is equivalent to buying a ticket to camp on the Playa.  This helps to pay for the cost of renting the sims in Second Life®.

We have a Plot Lottery
Apply for our Plottery if you find you are unable to afford a plot, but you want a place to call your home on the Playa.

Create a Small Art Display
Big art sounds intimidating?  We are inviting Burners to contribute small-scale art that will be displayed across the Playa. You can sign up on this page. Meanwhile, put on your art beret, fire up the sketchbook or mesh build apps and add your bit of creativity to this event.

Gift Your Talents in Tunes and Dance
Not into building virtually?  Burn2 has three official stages for performers: Main Stage, BOB Stage, and Center Camp at Burn2. Visit our website for information on how you can join the event as a DJ, live mixer, live musician or singer.  The stage times are first come, first served. And all camps aka “plots'' have their own sound stream and can create their own stage. You can even do your thing inside your camp space and invite others to join you, of course.  Want to read, interview someone, have poetry readings?   You can do that with a live stream or in local voice chat.

And, last but not least...the Man will Burn! And we will also burn a beautiful Temple, a space that we hope you will enjoy similar to the experience you get from being in the presence of a temple on a physically dusty Playa.

Tell Your Friends and Plan to Come!
We look forward to welcoming Home Burners and our community. Walk through the gate, and if you are a virgin Burner, ring the bell! Follow the Lamplighters on their twice-daily processions; visit the Rangers, view the Man and meditate in the Temple. Wander, explore, climb, interact. Dress your avatar in your Playa finest.  Visit the many performance camps with music to soothe, inspire, excite and incite to dance with your avatar in your own living room. You will be surrounded by art, music, fire and welcoming Burners!

Want to stay informed through group notices? Join the BurningMan 2.0 group in Second Life. Do a search on groups or pull up the profile of any BURN2 staff member, open the group properties, and click the Join button. As always, the 10 Principles serve as our framework for how we want to live and do things together.

About Burning Man Project
The nonprofit Burning Man Project produces the annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, and works year-round to provide support, education, and grants to a global ecosystem of artists, makers and community leaders. In doing so, the organization functions as the cultural heart of the global Burning Man community, facilitating and extending the culture that has issued from the Burning Man event into the larger world.

SL18B Starts Today

After a few months of planning and preparation, the Second Life Eighteenth Birthday is finally ready to begin.  There will be 23 sims with much to see and much to do. There will be numerous music events, both DJs and live performers. There will be at least one "Meet the Lindens" event, on Monday June 21. In some separate sims there's the "Shop and Hop" event. It is believed there will be one reveal of new Linden Homes. And of course there's all those resident exhibits.

Among the exhibits is that of the Second Life Newser. Build by Silvia Ametza (with help from Kimble (kimblecoles) ), the build reflects the theme "hidden worlds" with a look at the Earth's core (and a poke at the flat-Earthers). The build is in Pizzazz (187/171/23).

The sims are scheduled to open at 9AM SL time. At 11 AM is the Opening Ceremony at the Main Stage.

Main Stage 1: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SLB%20Fascinate/33/226/21

SL18B Opens Tomorrow

Yesterday, Tuesday June 15, the sims of the Second Life Eighteenth Birthday, which had a number of sims separated from the main group, were once again all back together. As of the writing of this article, yours truly is unable to get in. Of the exhibits I did see when I could, there were some good ones.

While no one's getting in, or is free to go into details about what's on the SLB grounds, there's still some fun chatter in the Second Life Birthday group. And at one point someone had a free gift. Epeya (Epeya2 Resident) was offering unofficial SL18B hats to anyone in the Second Life Birthday group who wanted one.

It's unknown when the exhibitors will be allowed back onto the sims. One of the moles did confirm that those in the Second Life Birthday group will be allowed early access in the Shop and Hop areas at 9AM.

The Second Life Eighteenth Birthday grounds are scheduled to open to all on Thursday June 17 at 9AM SL time. At 11AM, Patch Linden gives the opening ceremony at the Main Stage. Linden Lab would announce this in the official blog, plus give a link to the Calendar of SL18B events: (Click Here).

The Fantasy Faire is over. As always the Relay mega-event had much to see and do. There were DJs playing music. There were shops to find limited deals. There was the Fairelands Quest. And of course lots of well-designed sims to explore. Yours truly was there, and took a number of pictures.

See the pictures in Events.

SL16B Theme Announced

Yesterday on Thursday March 14, Linden Lab made it's first announcement about the upcoming Second Life Sixteenth Birthday event, or the SL16B as it's called for short. The theme of the anniversary celebration will be "Sweet Sixteen."

It feels like we just packed away all that crystal magic from our 15th anniversary celebration, but our sweet sixteen is just around the corner! This summer, we’re throwing a huge celebration to commemorate 16 years with this incredible community and we wanted to fill you in on just a few of the details.

Sixteen years ago, on June 23rd, 2003, Second Life launched to the public. Though it feels like just yesterday and a lifetime ago at the same time, this year we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go retro and embrace the “Sweet Sixteen” theme for our big party. Sock hops, bowling alleys, and late nights at the diner were a quintessential part of many teenagers lives back in the 1950s, but the 1950s were also a time of political and social change. The world was shocked by the iconic ‘Elvis pelvis,’ and poodle and pencil skirts changed the fashion world forever. Rebellion became the titillating pastime among all that soda shoppe sweetness. It was an era that - like Second Life - rocked and rolled! So, this summer we’re throwing a 1950s themed SL16B with a TON of fun events and happenings. ...

The Lab also stated as in previous recent Second Life Birthdays, there will be a Music Fest and a shopping event. Merchants wanting to take part are asked to fill out a form (link). There will also be a "Come As You Were" party and another "Swaginator" gift hunt "with some updates and changes based on feedback" from last year's.

The event is scheduled to run from June 20 to July 8.

Stay tuned for more information on what's sure to be one of the big events of the year inworld.
