Cartoon of The Day: Feeling Super

Taken at the Shop.and Hop. Obviously this isn't Superman. But thinking about it, one in SL can do many things a superhero can, flying teleporting, lifting huge items. And yet unless you're the sim owner or in a combat sim, you can't punch out anything.

Discontinued City of Heroes MMO Private Server Gets Official Status From NCsoft

Some gamers, especially fans of superhero comics, will remember the "City of Heroes" MMO. It got attention partially for it's genre, being a superhero game when most MMOs at the time were science-fiction or Medieval fantasy, and partially for being the subject of a lawsuit by Marvel Comics, saying players were creating characters that infringed on it's copyrights. In 2012, it was shut down despite pleas from it's fans that NCSoft keep the game running

So what were the players to do? Many went to private servers where the game was kept running for those who wanted to keep heroing. Among these was one called Homecoming. One thing that was different about it was instead of trying to avoid attention from the game's corporate owners, from the start it was making an effort to negotiate with them. Finally on January 4, Homecoming made the following announcement in it's forums:

We’d like to thank you all for your patience over the past few years, and we’re incredibly thrilled to announce that it’s paid off: NCSOFT® has officially granted Homecoming a license to host City of Heroes™.

They went on to say that this meant the player and character accounts were now officially safe, there will continue to be more game content, and the game will continue to be free to those who want to play, "We will continue to be funded entirely through donations."

At a time in which corporations are quick to go to their lawyers, this is certainly a welcome development in the gaming world.

Cartoon of the Day: Marvel Disapointment

Taken at the RFL Home and Garden.  Captain Marvel may be a powerful superhero. But when it comes to popularity, he's way behind the guy in blue with the red cape.

Sci-Fi Expo and the Stan Lee Memorial

The Sci-Fi Expo is in town. Located in the Solaris Station sim, this is an event for science-fiction and fantasy fans inworld. One can enjoy the exhibits, do some shopping, find out more about some roleplay groups looking to expand their numbers, and more. The event raises funds for the Relay for Life in Second Life.

While science fiction is usually pretty fun, not all is well at the Expo. Stan Lee, the artistic genius whom help redefine superheroes, passed away on Monday November 12. Unlike the characters of other hero comics at the time which were often as two-dimensional as the paper their stories were printed on, Stan Lee's characters had more personality and had problems their readers could relate to. Spider-Man for instance could whomp the bad guys, but dealt with acne and girl trouble. Eventually, other studios would follow his lead and make their superhuman characters a little more human.

At the Expo, a memorial to Stan Lee was set up. A fitting tribute to an artist whom entertained many in their childhoods, as well as their adulthoods.

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the Relay Weekend track. When the Green Lantern character first came out, only part of is outfit was green, for some reason. That wasn't the only change over time as at first his weakness was wood, not the color yellow.

The Marvel Universe

After a hiatus, FoxytheJamie (aka Kimiko Kanagowa) is back with the Newser. In his first article with his return, he looks at "The Marvel Universe." Taking place in the environment of the Marvel comics, the players take on the role of superheroes. So what did Jamie think of it?

Read Jamie's article in Places.

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the Relay for Life. Seems two superhero roleplaying groups did a little mix and match with two different comic universes. And the way Batmain and Robin were paired with one of Spiderman's villains, it looks like the normally perceptive Caped Crusader is about to get a nasty surprise.

Cartoon of the Day

From the HFOT benefit at Veterans Isle, this girl showed up in a "Deadpool" costume. In the comics, there was no mention of the quirky "merc with a mouth" having a sister, let alone one having his abilities. But supposedly what gave the "accelerated healing factor" also caused disfigurement. That could complicate any plans for a Saturday night on the town. Then again, a girl doesn't need to look like a supermodel to be "awesome."
