Announcement: Kids' Quest for the Cure

Our show is the story of a group of children who, upon learning that a friend has cancer, embark on a mystical search for the cure, and learn a lot along the way.

It was conceived and choreographed, and is directed by, Patty Flow. Music by Kayla Flow.

Our cast includes members of the Roos With A Dream RFL team, with a special appearance by our good friend, and Cure Chaser, Sienna Thor.

The American Cancer Society and Children’s Hospital of 
Atlanta (CHOA) have partnered to provide virtual reality 
(VR) headsets for pediatric cancer patients to use while 
undergoing various cancer treatments within the hospital. 

Studies have shown:

        o    VR Distraction helps to reduce pain during 
procedures

        o    VR improved patients’ emotional well-being

        o    A reduction in patients’ distress in terms of cancer-
related psychological symptoms.

        o    A significant decrease in anxiety, distress, and f
atigue immediately after 

              chemotherapy sessions with VR

Moonlight Ducklings, A Daycare In Second Life

You may or may not have heard about SL kids, residents in child avatars whom go about as kids in Second Life. Often, they're part of roleplay families with adopted parents. But what happens when the parents don't have a lot of time? Marcel Mosswood recently interviewed the owner of Moonlight Ducklings Daycare, a place that offers "fun and safety" for the young children of virtual families.

Christmas Giving Tree and Sponsor an SL Child for the Holidays

The holiday season is almost over. But before we close the door on it,  Alura Denver (Alura Messing) was researching and interviewing about a Christmas event aimed at Second Life child avatars. For those whose inworld families are unavailable due to being out of town or otherwise wrapped up in real life, the Grid can be a lonely place for SL kids during the Holidays. So the owner of the Sweet Tots store got together with Crystalle Qork and came up with the first annual "Giving Tree and Sponsor an SL Child" event.

Wonder Egg Hunt

Gemma Cleansalte recently attended a Relay for Life event by the Fighting Sunflowers team. Taking place in an "Alice in Wonderland" themed area, kid and grown avatars alike took part in a hunt for Easter Eggs. And unlike the story, the Red Queen didn't go after anyone's head.

More on Beckye Burnstein

 Remember Beckye Burnstein the "Visible Woman?" Well, like so many builders, she's still at it. She recently sent me a "Le Smart T-shirt" Coming in three sizes of Mesh, it's actually a couple dozen shirts in one.

 With the HUD controls, one can change the shirt to one of the couple dozen pictures stored. One can find the shirt, and other goods of hers, in her store (check her profile for the location of the place).

Beckye's also been sporting a child avatar lately. She says she may slowly grow it over time at the rate of about one year a month. She may eventually construct child-sized organs for it later, like she had for her adult form.

Her interest in child avatars goes beyond just clothing. She developed a racing group with child avatars in mind, the "SL Kids Racing Association." It has a racetrack at the Nightshark sim at (43/58/3511), and a Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/SLKRA?pnref=story

Reader Submitted: Camp HardKnock Summer 2013

Longtime readers may remember Mindy, one of the Steelhead Estates younger residents. The adopted daughter of Fuzzball and Eugine Ortega, she went to Camp Hardknock while the adults were busy getting ready for the Relay For Life. While there, Mindy took a pictures, and send a few to the Newser.

 What's summer camp without getting some fireflies.

The archery range. Mindy says she was able to get one bulls-eye.

And where there are kids at camp, there are pranks. The one Mindy was most proud of, when she and the girls painted a pink panther paw on the side of the boy's cabin. She says it was a week before they discovered it.

That's it with Mindy's pictures. What's next for the little rascal? We'll soon see.

Rust and the Goonies

One sim in the Linden Endowment of the Arts area that's gotten a little talk is "Rust." The artist Cica Ghost created a work described as "stunning." Dropping in, it wasn't long before I had some company. A group of SL kids, The Goonies, had shown up, and they wanted to explore as well.

Family Fun at Dreams of Hope

           

 One day I was invited to a fishing contest at Dreams of Hope. It was such a sweet looking sim.  I went back to check it out. Daviano Jack Constantine and Shelby Marie Constantine have created a playland for SL kids and their families. It is a safe place for SL kids and is  bustling with activities to suit all ages, but catering to the SL kids who know how to have fun!  

 

There are fishing contests, of course, and hiking, horse riding and biking trails through lush greenery. You can take a boat ride if you want. I liked the playground with all the toys to play with. Camp weekends are planned so families can get together.  I attended a story reading time that was great.  Daviano read a cute story to the kids who attended and had lots of comments to make about it. 

 

One morning I was able to get to a breakfast and met some of the kids. One had the most fun ribbing the others and hoping to avoid getting sent to “time out”!! I did notice that Daviano want off to make coffee while Shelby was left to be the ”bad one,” LOL! There was lots of burping and belching and giggles. 

 

I asked one of the kids, Brandon, what he liked about the group and told me,”I came on SL back in February. I found the camp purely by accident. It caught my eye right away. I loved the look of it. Holly did such a wonderful job. I started coming regularly. We had camp on the weekend and went on field trips, listen story, dressed up and had dance contest, colored Easter eggs and much more. Its one of my favorite sims and hope it stays around for a long time. Its changed so much but everyone there is very close. Like a family.“ 

 

The food was good too, bacon and eggs. There are parties several days a week in the amphitheater with live entertainers and also DJs with contests for “best in.“  Everyone who attends has a lot of fun. Take a trip over to see the sim and join the group. If you really like it you can rent a place there.

Camp Hardknock

Gemma Cleanslate recently found out about about what some kid avatar fans regard as their best time in Second Life: Camp Hardknock. Heading over, what she saw was a place with a wide range of experiences for the kids. The place is guided by the counselors of course, of which doing thing behind their back is a favorite pasttime. Gemma took an in-depth look at the place, and the fun the SL kids had.

It's been quite a birthday event for Second Life, with the SL9B in full swing. Although a bit busy in real-life, On Wednesday I had a little time to explore a little. I saw a few exhibits in action, ran into a Linden while there, and even saw some of a question and answer session with Qarl Fizz, the former Qarl Linden about mesh.

Camp Kawabata - Cub Scouts in Second Life

Gemma Cleanslate noted that at times a kid avatar in a scout uniform was at some of the events the newspaper covered. She decided to take a closer look, and found a whole community of scouts. Here, she takes a look at one of the scouting sims, Camp Kawabata, where the scouts would meet. But they didn't always stay there, taking a number of field trips.

Have You Ever Wondered? The Kids of Second Life

Those who have followed my articles on SL Kids (adults role-playing kids in SL) know I am a great fan of all the kids. I first saw the talents they were sharing at the SL5B. I met some then and wondered why would they would want to be kids. That is when I began to talk to them and visited the sims of various kid places and wrote about them. I got it, I understand it.

I have a hard time with those who do not understand their desire to be kids in Second Life. Oh, I know it can be annoying sometimes to some to encounter one in an odd place and hear the cutesy stuff, but maybe if you play along you will understand. I would like you to hear from some of them their reasons for opting to be a kid. Maybe it will explain it to your mind and your heart. I have asked some kids to share their stories with you so that maybe you will get it too.

The paper will be printing them every day in People section beginning today. My thanks to Marianne McCann for helping with this project. (she has the best fireworks I have ever seen in SL and is a great kid!)

Childhood in SL - A Visit to the SL Kids SL7B Exhibit

The kid avatars in Second Life occasionally raise eyebrows, due to people wondering why would someone grown want to experience the Metaverse as a child?
