Heat Index: History, Basis in Empirical Mathematical Physics and Usage in Modern Meteorology By Tagline Since the 1950s, meteorologists have sought to quantify the combined biophysical effects of temperature and humidity on exposed humans and animals. Thus, some measure of “apparent heat” for weather reporting can be critically important for the agricultural industry and ecological-environmental management, as well as human comfort and safety. By the late 1970s, a mathematical model based on atmospheric physics and human thermoregulation became available. In the United States, the National Weather Service uses a single, simplified 4th degree polynomial of two variables: temperature and relative humidity. We will examine how initial psycho-perceptual concerns transformed into a rigorous biophysical mathematical model based on atmospheric physics and human thermoregulation, by which a measure called HEAT INDEX can be calculated. We will also survey other systems used across the globe.
