Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Ingenuity: First Aircraft on Mars!" And "Flight"

"Ingenuity: First Aircraft on Mars!"

Saturday September 4

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

We were not even sure it would work, but Ingenuity, the first helicopter on Mars, indeed the first manoeuvrable aircraft to operate outside the Earth’s atmosphere, has been a stunning success!

First we will examine the conditions and mechanics of flight and what makes Ingenuity’s performance a “Wright Brothers” moment.

Then we will follow Ingenuity’s progress from the drawing board through the dozen or more flights it has taken so far, with a look at how it can operate when its ‘pilot’ is 100s of millions of miles away, plus a peak at possible missions it might undertake in its future.

Finally, we will explore where and how other craft might operate in our solar system now that this technological breakthrough has been achieved.

— Dr. Phil Youngblood founded the CIS/Cyber Security degree programs at the University of the Incarnate Word, following retirement from naval aviation and research at NASA.

"Flight"

Saturday September 4

9PM to 10PM SL time

Welcome aboard Science Circle flight 409, covering the scientific principles and technologies that enable and enhance air transport. We ask that you please fasten your seatbelts before we discuss the fundamentals, from aerodynamics to aircraft stability. Take a few minutes to locate and understand the mechanisms of aircraft engines, whose designs have evolved for fuel efficiency and noise reduction.

As we experience astounding innovations in areas like material science, descriptions of the benefits to the environment and your comfort in the cabin will be deployed. Thank you for choosing the Science Circle. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your Flight!

Press Release: 2019 RFL Team Sunbeamer Air Show

Your welcome to the 6th annual 2019 Sunbeamers RFL Air Show and Fly In on Saturday April 13th from 8 AM to 4 PM SLT.

Included in the event is an Airship Steeple Chase. For a donation of 100L, or what you feel like giving, you enter and are given for free a bicycle blimp you pedal through a series of jumps above the ground. The fastest time at the end of the day wins 500L and a cheap trophy. We will be providing a pedal power balloon for the contest so all are equal. For those who wish to pilot their own airship may do so but will not be in the contest, it will be just for the fun of it.

There are more events for any donations around the field. One such is dunking your partner or other victim in a nice cool dunk tank, that is instead of a beanbag you fire a German 88mm shell into its target!!, Then there is being shot out of a cannon straight up to the moon where a provided special RFL 2019 textured parachute for free gently brings you back down.

In addition to the cannon bring your new tested parachute along to a parachute jump from an airplane from 2000 meters at scheduled times.

There will be planes on display with information about them. Some Pilots will be on hand to give rides and flight demonstrations or you can just BYOAP [Bring Your Own Airplane] and stunt around yourself.

Scenes From The Sunbeamer Air Show

One of the first things most new residents learn in Second Life learn is how to fly. But not everybody wants to "Superman" around. And there are those with a love of airplanes. So for those wanting to fly around in style, the annual air show at Farshore Field allowed for some aerial antics, as well as other activities. As the show is held in support of the Relay for Life's Sunbeamer team, it's considered a key event that brings in a great deal of donations. And once again, this year the show put the Sunbeamers into a record level of fundraising.

Having a Blast at the Military Expo

It was "Death from above" at the March Military Expo early Tuesday afternoon. at 12PM SL time, formations of A-10 "Warthog" ground attack aircraft from the Flying Tiger's 74th Squadron took off from an airport in the WW2 Tribute sim. Their mission: destroy as many of the nearby ground targets as they could.

From the safety of the airport, onlookers could watch, and pan out safely from a distance. They watched as the aircraft blanketed the ground with bombs and missiles, turning tanks, oil drums, observation towers, etc. into black, smoldering, wrecks. But it wasn't long before the wrecks were repaired back into operation, requiring more blowing up from the pilots happy to do so.

Eventually, the pilots came back to base, where they congratulated one another. Among the Tigers was Vickster Khun, also known for her role at the New Bastogne WW2 Combat RP region. Earlier I had a few words with her and officer Jessi Warrhol. They described a few events, including a firefight and rescue on Thursday March 29th. Set for Noon SL time, the 38th Squadron will work with the SL Coast Guard in a firefighting and rescue mission. A ship on fire, if all goes as planned, will have the flames estinguished and the crew evacuated. At the Expo tomorrow. March 28th, will be two air assaults at Noon and 6 SL time respectively.

Besides watching the air campaigns, one can also go to the many shops set up on the memorial flying platform and buy a plane for oneself, or go to one of the music events. Sunday for instance had an Areosmith tribute band, with donations collected for the Relay for Life.

Moreevents can be found in the expo schedule Here. For more information, check out http://slflyingtigers.blogspot.com and http://militaryexpo.blogspot.com/ .

The LM is at WW2 Tribute (57, 97, 25).
