Announcement: HFOT June 2021 Donations

 

Hello to all Homes For Our Troops supporters,

I hope your summer is providing you with “fun in the sun” and all is well.

I am happy to report that in June we sent $1350 to Homes for Our Troops.  That is a 40% increase over 2020’s May totals of $960.  Our total for 2021 is now $11677.5 .  So we are on track to beat last years total of over $15000 ….and hopefully stay in the list of top ten donors for HFOT!

In communicating with Jamie Crossman, HFOT’s Director of Individual Giving, we discussed how fundraising can be frustrating at times.  Putting in a lot of time and effort and not reaching goals.  However, the effort by the Second Life Community keeps moving forward each month.  And as a result Jamie expressed this about our efforts for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life:

"Thank you so much for all of your continued time, talents and energy on our behalf!"

This year is shaping up to be the best we have ever had.  We can do this ….let’s hit $25,000 for Homes For Our Troops #1 in 2021!  THIS MEANS THE TARGET NOW IS $2250 A MONTH TO HIT THAT $25000.   It is going to be work …but it is well worth it!

The Busy Season

  

We've done over a hundred briefs, videos, announcements, cartoons, and articles this month. June has always been a busy season with the Second Life Birthday. But in the past few years, it's been even more so. With the Relay Weekend shifted from July to June, that means there's even more news to report on in a shorter time (one reason for the delay in the in-depth look at the Meet the Lindens events). While some things can be put on the back burner for a few days to a few weeks, the news never stops and more breaking news inevitably drops in (and possibly some real-life). Sadly this means a few things that might otherwise get written about end up on the cutting room floor.

So if you feel there's a particular topic that you feel needs covered, let us know. Or better yet, write something about it and send it over (bixylshuftan@gmail.com is the editor's email). Most submissions we get we can post with little to no editing.

Relay Dates Announced, Earlier Season This Year

 In the Relay for Life Volunteers Group, a few of the dates for this year's Relay season were announced. The one for this month is registration for the Relay, which is January 20.

RFL of SL 2019 Registration is January 20th!  Help us get the word out, through your groups, friends, and even social media! This is going to be the best Relay ever! If you would like to arrange a meeting between RFL Leads, yourself, and someone you know who might be interested in forming a team, sponsorship, partnership, etc?. We've attached a notecard to help you with your conversations 

There was also a reminder of last year's announcement that this would be an earlier Relay season, with the Kickoff in February and the Relay Weekend in early June.

There are great things in store for Relay For Life of Second Life! Some of the important dates to remember are listed below. Let's keep those dates fresh in everyone's mind, spread the word around the grid.

Registration-January 20, 2019
Kickoff-February 16, 2019
Five Days of Relay-June 3-7, 2019
Relay Event Weekend, June 8-9. 2019


In September, Stingray stated the decision was made after talking to other volunteers, who felt that more people were logged in earlier in the year, so they would be more likely to get more donations in an earlier season.

Relay For Life 2019 Season to Start in February, Relay Weekend on June 8

For years, the Relay for Life fundraising season had it's Kickoff in March and had the Relay Weekend in July. This changed this year when the season started a month later. After some brainstorming, it was decided to shift the season a month early. In 2019, it will be starting on Saturday February 16, and the Relay Weekend will be on Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, "This will be the first time in the history of the event that it will be held in June."

On www.slrelayinfo.com, Stingray Rainmaker, "referenced Second Life demographics and economic metrics as the initial reason for considering moving the event date from its traditional mid-July weekend. 'Our volunteers all had an opportunity to weigh in on this decision and the overwhelming feedback was in favor of holding Relay For Life of Second Life in June because it will allow our season to start earlier, when more residents are logged in and active.'"

This will be quite a change for the Relay as this puts the high point of the season, the Relay Weekend, in the same month as the Second Life Birthday. While the two events won't overlap, some people who were planning to build for both may be rethinking their plans. What we can say is that they way the Newser will report both events may be a little different than previous years. It's sure to be an interesting Relay season.

Press Release: Homes For Our Troops June 2017 Total Donations

On this historic weekend when we celebrate the founding of our country, it is once again a joy to announce that we were able to send Homes for Our Troops  $850 because of our efforts in June 2017 in Second Life.  The total for this year now comes to just over $5600 for 2017 as a result of many kind people in Second Life.

Sansar Opening Delayed Until Later in 2017

In September, Linden Lab announced that Sansar would be fully open to the public in January 2017. But earlier this month, in an interview Ebbe Linden basically stated that their next virtual world wouldn't be ready until at least March. But in a recent interview with "Road To VR," Linden Lab had pushed back the date of the opening to sometime in "the first half of 2017." This means it could be as late as June when it is finally online.

Newser Beach Party This July

About twice a year, sometimes more, the Newser crew holds a beach party, to both have a little fun and get to know our readers. Usually we have one close to our anniversary on June 6. But this time, there have been a lot of things going on. Second Life is a busy time anyway in June with the Second Life Birthday celebrations, of which the Newser has been a participant as well as covering it, and the Relay events, which include our neighbors the Sunweavers / Sunbeamer Team. And lately there's been some other things going on, including in real life for some of the staff. So we will be postponing the party until a weekend between the SLB and the Relay Weekend, which means sometime in July. No one event caused this decision. We've simply had to deal with a lot on top of what we usually do, and something had to give.

Sorry to those whom were looking for a little fun in the sun with us. If anyone wants to invite the team to their own beach party, by all means those of us who can make it will drop by. In the meantime, keep the sunscreen and swimwear handy for next month.
