Book Island Book Reading

On Tuesday January 19 at 2PM, Selina Greene had a book reading at Book Island, reading an excerpt from the dystopian classic "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. In the novel, "firemen" do not put out fires but are tasks with burning books as the government has outlawed them. The main character is a fireman who comes to question what he has been doing.

Book Island Reading

On Wednesday May 27 at 2PM, there was a reading at Book Island. Selina Grene had been reading George Orwell's "Animal Farm" for some weeks, and this was the reading of the last part.

2pm Book Island - Selina Greene reads the final part of Animal Farm by George Orwell. Next week we will begin another dystopian classic... Do join us.

For those who don't know, the story was a cautionary tale by George Orwell about how revolutions can all too easily end up the same old oppression under a new set of masters. In the story, a farm is run by a farmer uncaring of his animals, and the creatures rise up to throw him out. But the animals are betrayed by their leaders, the pigs, whom end up using the revolution for their own selfish ends.

To keep up with  the readings at Book Island, check out the group here.

Book Island SL Newser Location Gets A Makeover

Remember a few days ago when the Newser had to move it's auxiliary office at Book Island? Since then, we've decorated the place a little. Yours truly put up some pictures. But Gemma Cleanslate did most of the work, putting in carpeting, chairs, desks, and flowers. So it's now a place to relax, as well as get the news.

Book Island continues to have events, such as the book reading here hosted by Selina Greene, with manager Otter Xue also there. So if you're an avid book reader, or perhaps want to share a little of something you did recently, join the group and keep an eye out for events.

"Promptly Erotic" at Book Island

Grease Coakes is back with a story. In his article today, he writes about a recent trip to Book Island in which they had a new kind of event: "Promptly Erotic." Hosted by Freda Frostbite, the event is an exercise for those aspiring to write adult fiction. Grease attended the workshop, and even submitted a sample.

Selina Greene's Birthday Party at Sisters Haven

At 2PM Jan 4, Book Island Director Selina Greene was given a birthday bash at Sisters Haven, in the Molson sim.

Besides Selina, DrFran Babcock and I were among those there. There event had a "Roaring 20s" theme, with a burlesque act at one point for the guys (though the girls probably enjoyed watching them drool).

The event went on for a couple hours. The only mishap, besides one of the dancing girls slipping on a cake, was when one of the men dressed as a gangster, his Thompson gun accidentally slipped from his violin case. Fortunately no shots were fired, and after he noticed, he placed the gun back away.

A good time was had by all.

Book Island's Anniversary Celebrations

May is Book Island's Fifth Anniversary month, and the past few days have seen some special anniversary events. On Saturday May 19th, Book Island owner Selina Greene gave a talk to an audience about the history of Book Island. She thanked Arton Tripsa for her "incredible job" on the island in creating a "warm and relaxing environment," in addition to giving credit to Bobby (Barbara) Blackcinder, Angeline Blachere, and Sandor Zabelin (Alexander M Zoltai).

Following the talk, the floor was cleared, and people began to dance, the music provided by "Pirate DJ" Izzy Upsilon, whom was also noted for short stories and poetry at the island. Besides the DJ, a few others were in pirate getup as well.

Wednesday May 23rd brought more special events, such as a "Live Writing Event" by Aianna Oh, and a dance party with singer Chandra Deed. Saturday May 26 promises more special events, with live music events at the Book Island Dance Venue at Book Island (222, 42, 22). At 2 PM is guitarist Brendan Shoreland, and 3:15 PM singer Layna Chrome.

Book Island has a long history in Second Life. At one point it was in trouble when the owner was hit with some real life problems. But it quickly bounced back and today is a thriving community of writers with several events every week.
