The Firecracker Arcade

For those looking for a little game time, one place you can head to in Second Life is the Firecracker Arcade. Located in Montecito Bay, the venue is owned and run by Mateo Firecaster. While some locations have just a few games, Firecracker has plenty.

The ground floor has some table games, pool, air hockey, and a couple others. There's also skeeball, hoop games, shooting games, and a dancing game. There's also a novelty game "Off With Their Head," and a mechanical bull. Getting on the bull will send you on a wild ride that will usually throw you off after a few seconds.

The bottom floor is the bowling alley, with several bowling lanes. You'll need to click on one to get a bowling ball and attach it to play. There's also a few other games, such as one in which you try to run over as many slimes as you can within a time limit.

The top floor will give those who grew up in the 1980s memories of the video arcade. There's dozens of arcade games there able to be played. Some are actual games that were in the arcade such as Punch Out and Elevator Action. There's also some games from home video systems such as Kid Icarus and Sonic the Hedgehog. And some computer games are represented, such as Wolfenstein 3D and Sim-City.

The Firecracker Arcade is in the north-central part of Montecito Bay, near the Roller Club Disco. Those dropping by the club on Wednesday nights can always go to the arcade for games before or after the tunes.

The SL Living Expo At A Glance

There's been a lot going on at the SL Living Expo. On Tuesday March 7, the "Bowling With The Lindens" took place. The residents were the winners of a silent auction, who got to go up against Patch Linden and a few other Lindens and Moles.

Cosmic Mole got some complements for his bowling ability, though more eyes were naturally on Patch. While I was watching, the Lindens as a group were doing better at one point, and there were a few jokes among the resident team, nicknamed the "Kess Tickles" (named for Kess Smith), that the Lindens were pulling some kind of "magic." One mused, "I will hunt your bots down and capture them all if you guys win!  Bonnie bots in my basement!" There were some jokes about the recent list of last names, Kess commenting, "I nearly bit the bullet on a Sausage name." Patch would admit, "hat was my idea!"

I didn't see all the games played, but the resident team pulled ahead in the one I saw, and the score for that particular game was "534 for Kess Tickles Team.... 477 for Patch and the Moles!" Cosmic would muse, "And as your reward... you win a free all-expenses paid trip to a luxurious sandbox, where you'll have a chance to organize your inventory (grin)."

There have been a number of music events at the Expo, DJs and an occasional live musician performing on stage. On Thursday night March 9 it was the turn of DJ Mattie (Mattie Carlton/Mattie Foxpaws), filling in for a DJ who left early. She would raise a total of 7,000 Lindens.

Sunday March 12 is the last day of Expo events, so head on over.

Reader Submitted: Mount Raglympus Bowling Lanes

By Liam Metaluna

A bowling alley sprung up at Raglan Shire this summer to go with an "OOL" (no P in our OOL) and theater, all with a Greek theme. A perfect 300 score soon followed at the lanes, which astounded all because it's hard to break 150. Umiko Juriya put up the 12 straight strikes. The shire was all abuzz about the score, so this panda tracked down the hatchie, who gave a few clues on how to bowl better.

"I LOVE the bowling alley here. It's lots of fun.," Umiko said. "I'm quite glad that Kage (Stratten) put it up."

The aquatic dragon.said she's only bowled a couple times in real life. "I only recall bowling once or twice in my real life, and I don't think I did very well. ^_^;;;"

In Second Life, she's got plenty of shooting experience. "I do combat, elsewhere in SL and it's a bit easier to aim at stationary pins than at people running around all over the place. -^_^-"

She also gave this tip for a good score: "If you find the spot you got a strike from (and you're not in the way of other bowlers, hehe), then you probably shouldn't move."

Umiko displayed her winning bowling ball, which she's texture special for her use. "I texture a lot of my things," Umiko said. "With this one, I like the swirly, styled-rainbow colors. I don't know if it has any real effect on my bowling. I couldn't change it to help my game. (Though I would if I could! XD)."

Asked if being a dragon had an advantage for bowling, Umiko said, "It's just the way our avatars look, hehe. I don't think we have any more or less of an advantage."

Umiko did break a smile towards the end of the interview about her perfect game. "Eeps! that was silly cheatings hehe," Umiko said, "My computer can handle having two viewers open. So I had my other character at the end of the aisle knocking down the pins, and then I would throw the ball. XD If you cross that (approach) line, it nulls the score. XD."

Still, quite the sporting achievement, the use of two screens, two characters and the timing to get all the pins knocked down in a short time span for each frame.

Finally, Umiko's take on a bowling league: "It would be fun, especially since it's easier in Second Life than it is in real life."

The official name of bowling alley is Mount Raglympus Bowling Lanes, and is at Raglan Shire (200/164/23)
