"Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Failure in Human Disease"

Some two billion years ago, a seminal, endosymbiotic event occurred: a larger, anaerobic bacterial cell ingested a smaller, aerobic prokaryotic ‘germ’. This beneficial union of two life forms led to the evolution of more highly organized eukaryotic cells with mitochondria as subcellular organelles. These mitochondria still retain their own bacteria-like DNA – they also replicate themselves. As the metabolic power source for eukaryotic cells, mitochondria utilize (detoxify) oxygen to produce energy, an attribute that has made possible the rise of multi-cellular organisms and higher life forms. Mitochondria are vital to cellular life and therefore, to human life. Unfortunately, they can also be subject to genetically-based errors of metabolism.

"Nuclear Energy"

The prospect of carbon-free electricity produced reliably and abundantly would incentivize investments in nuclear energy. Concerns over proper fuel disposal or recurrences of nuclear accidents with disastrous consequences also inhibit liberal employment of the energy source. Alternative power plant designs such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are being considered to improve safety and reduce construction costs. To what extent should we consider nuclear energy a solution to ensuring our energy needs are met in our struggle with climate change?

The EQUIVALENCE THEOREM (a.k.a. Bernstein-Schröder Theorem)
Modern set theory originated between 1874 – 1884 from the researches of Georg Cantor at Universität Halle, Germany. Around 1895, Cantor presented the EQUIVALENCE CONJECTURE:
While this may seem obvious to many, it was not until 1898 that Cantor’s student, Felix Bernstein proved the theorem without flaw.
In this presentation we will review relevant concepts of set theory: types of mappings of sets and their behaviour when sets are combined by union, intersection and difference (relative complement); sizes of sets and equivalence; partitions of sets; special attention will be given to properties of chains of sets (nested subsets).
Then we will demonstrate two approaches for proof of the Equivalence Theorem (the Cantor-Bernstein-Schröder Theorem): 1) à la Bernstein: 2) a stream-lined proof for contrast based on defining a bijective function (1-to-1 from A onto B).
Interesting examples of applications of this theorem will be given that give insight to distinct “DEGREES OF INFINITY”.
Relevant background for this is basic set theory, high school-level mathematics and a normal, human logic.
The goal of this is to help members of the audience understand the strategy of attack in the subtle proof of this important mathematical theorem whose statement is so deceptively simple. Secondarily, this instruction illuminates aspects of how one learns mathematics.

A major pandemic is sweeping the globe. Cases of COVID-19 are growing exponentially as people spread the disease throughout our connected world. Individuals and societal groups are reacting differently, looking for solutions to stem the threat to our health and way of life.
Dr. Hendrix will talk about what we all want to know – what this is, what you can do about it, and what medical researchers are doing to try to find ways to combat the virus.
Dr. Youngblood will talk about what has happened over the last few months, what is happening now, and how individuals and society are reacting to the pandemic, recognizing that this presentation and discussion is a snapshot of our collective experience that is ongoing and rapidly changing.

"A Short History of the Antibiotic Era"

We will begin by examining what in the scientific milieu led to the discovery of the first antibiotic. We will consider the transition from Paul Ehrlich and the organically bound Arsenic Compound 606 to the emergence of “natural antibiotics” beginning with Fleming and Penicillin. We will walk through the major advances chronologically, with attention to diseases that became treatable, as well as the mechanism of bacteriostatic or bactericidal action on microbes.
Finally, we will discuss the possible END of the ANTIBIOTIC ERA with the widespread emergence off drug resistance as well as destruction of potential sources of new drugs such as reckless clearing of rain forests as ecological and bio-molecular reservoirs.

Experience has shown that Virtual Worlds (VWs) can provide students a unique interactive educational experience that many students see as a fun way to learn. VWs go beyond just offering text to read or a video to watch. In VWs students interact with objects. For example, a student can study the diagram of an ear online or in a textbook; but in a VW the student can walk through the ear, a whole different experience. Studies have shown that students learn more from doing, than from reading or listening to a lecture, and VWs have the potential to provide this hands-on learning experience in a cost-effective manner.
Furthermore, teaching students to function in virtual environments provides them with skills that will be beneficial, if not critical, for success in the future job market.
The aim of this manual is to help educators incorporate VWs into their courses in ways that enhance student learning. It will guide one through getting started and show them how to use VWs to make classes more fun and interesting. It will help them avoid the common errors educators make in VWs and allow them to build on the successes of others. The advice presented here comes from work in the VW called Second Life (SL), but much of this advice applies to other VWs, such as Open Simulator and Kitely, as well as to virtual reality (VR).

Death can occur not only from liver failure but more likely, associated cardiovascular disease. This talk will review the clinical presentation and natural course of this disease process and its possible associations with modern lifestyle, diet and gastrointestinal (gut) microbiota.

"Heroes of Evolution: Kettlewell and Majerus: Of Moths and March of Science
"This lecture will honor the accomplishments of two scientists who helped demonstrate “Evolution in Action.”
"Dr. Henry Bernard Davis Kettlewell spent time in the field counting moths in response to increasing amounts of pollution. This phenomenon of industrial melanism was an excellent demonstration of microevolution showing how a population of organisms change in accordance with environmental changes. Unfortunately, scientific criticism lead to junk science criticisms by anti-evolutionists.
"Dr. Mike Majerus followed up on the scientific criticisms with his own updated experiments solidifying this basic concept of modern evolutionary theory. This talk focuses on the basics of the science and also the process of how science works.
"It will, as is typical for the speaker, criticize the bad faith arguments of the anti-evolutionists and reflect on the challenges for rational thought in today’s culture."
