Titanic Build in Yumix Region

The Newser was recently informed about a reconstruction of a famous ship: The Titanic. Dropping by Yumix Dream Land, I found the ship was enormous. So large, it had to be placed diagonally so it could fit in the sim.

One can walk about on the decks, and there is some access inside.

The Yumix region is most noted for a build of another famous ship: the Yamato. It's still there in the Yamato Memorial sim.

There was a sign in the area saying that the region was 17 years old.

The RMS Titanic was the largest ship in the world at the time it was built. The ocean liner would sink on it's maiden voyage in May 1912, taking about 1500 of the 2224 passengers and crew with it. The tragedy has continued to have an impact on popular culture to this day.

SL Video: "Second Life Destinations - Battleship Yamato Memorial"

From Draxtor Despres for Second Life on May 2, "This virtual memorial site features 1:1 scaled models of the Japanese battleship YAMATO, which was commissioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy shortly after their attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, as well as the aircraft carrier AKAGI, which was originally built in the 1920s. The models were built by MASAKADO Allen. At the landing point, you can pick up a free airplane to fly around the region. Explore the biggest battleship in the world at this impressive 3D replica!"

The Yamato Memorial Returns

Battleship fans will know about a number of ships, among them the Yamato. This symbol of Imperial Japanese might served from December 1941 to April 1945, when it was sunk in the Imperial Navy's last major operation in World War Two, the sinking sometimes considered a metaphor for the end of the Japanese Empire.  The ship would live on in poetry, as well as the "Star Blazers" anime.

Second Life has its own version of the Yamato. First appearing around 2008 or 2009, it's vanished and reappeared a few times over the years. The Newser last wrote about the sim-long vessel five years ago in March 2018.

The ship would once again vanish some time later. But I was told by a friend recently it's back, alongside the carrier Akagi and the cruser Myoko. While you can't go below decks, it's still one of the most impressive ships in Second Life.

The Yamato Memorial

Some battleships live on in history, such as the Missouri and the Bismark. For Japan, the one that lives on in their memory is the Yamato. The vessel is noted for two things. It was the the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleship. But it is also remembered for it's final voyage, a one-way mission which was a last-ditch attempt to defend it's homeland. The ship has been in and out of Second Life a few times over the years. Recently, it came back after an absence of several months. It's not the only warship in the area, but there are others worth seeing.

Later: The Yamato

About five years ago, the Newser reported on the inworld replica of the Japanese battleship Yamato. Recently, we were informed that the ship is apparently back in Second Life after having been gone for about a year. We'll have more information, and pictures, later today.

If you can't wait, head to Yamato Mamorial (25/222/21).

Addition: Due to breaking news, story postponed until later this week.

A Visit to the Yamato

Miyuki Naidoo, the hostess of Club Zero Gravity, at the Yamato memorial. When hearing about the battleship in Second Life, she wanted to pay a visit. She ended up going with a group, including one Japanese animation fan interested in seeing the ship behind the "Star Blazers" sci-fi anime. Miyuki's choice of wear was a kimono, her feeling it would be more respectful.

The Yamato Memorial

A few years ago, among the big ships rebuilt in Second Life was the Imperial Japanese battleship Yamato. Om March 2012, the ship and its sim were found to have have vanished. But recently, the Yamato was discovered to be once again on the Grid. Grey Lupindo went over to the sim to take a look at this huge warship.

SL Youtube: The Yamato in Second Life

Some sad news for nautical fans. Checking up on the LM to the battleship Yamato, I found it was broken, the sim gone.

I wrote about the build a few years ago for Second Life Newspaper. The ship took the entire length of the sim, and was well detailed. Visitors could walk about, and inside a few places. There was also a seaplane available to fly (and a smaller version for tinies). Oddly enough, there were pictures of the real-life ship inside a sealed room with no door, which suggested there were further building plans.

However, I did see a second Yamato build in another location. So perhaps the ship still exists somewhere, unnoticed, on the Grid.

The real Yamato was one of two of Imperial Japan's largest battleships. In March 1945, it was sent on it's final mission in a last-ditch attempt to slow down the Allied advance. It was sunk on April 7. The Japanese Empire would never again launch a major naval operation, "the word Yamato was often used as a poetic name for Japan. Thus, the end of battleship Yamato could serve as a metaphor for the end of the Japanese empire."
