Titanic Build in Yumix Region

The Newser was recently informed about a reconstruction of a famous ship: The Titanic. Dropping by Yumix Dream Land, I found the ship was enormous. So large, it had to be placed diagonally so it could fit in the sim.

One can walk about on the decks, and there is some access inside.

The Yumix region is most noted for a build of another famous ship: the Yamato. It's still there in the Yamato Memorial sim.

There was a sign in the area saying that the region was 17 years old.

The RMS Titanic was the largest ship in the world at the time it was built. The ocean liner would sink on it's maiden voyage in May 1912, taking about 1500 of the 2224 passengers and crew with it. The tragedy has continued to have an impact on popular culture to this day.

Titanic – The Night To Remember

It was a little more than four years ago since the Newser wrote about the Titanic in Second Life, a build of the famous passenger liner that sank on it's maiden voyage a century before the article then was written. The ship is still there, still having regular events. Hearing about this, Deaflegacy went over to look over the build for an update. Besides the ship, she also found out about a museum exhibit on the doomed vessel, which was also very well done.

Yoz Linden Leaving Linden Lab

On his Twitter page, Yoz Linden, Yoz Grahame in real life, wrote a message that stated he was leaving Linden Lab.

Thanks for everything, Linden Lab; it's been virtual. Always remember: YOU RUN A F***ING WORLD. This is Yoz Linden Signing out. ONWARDS!

Daniel Voyager listed Yoz's roles as "technical lead for Linden Lab, social applications," and "web infrastructure." A year and a half ago, The Economist printed an article about how as one of the developers of the computer game "Starship Titanic,"  Yoz started an "Employee Forum" on the website which turned into it's own online community. When the company that made the game went under, rather than let the forum simply die, Yoz took it under his wing, "I moved it to my own hosting." Hamlet Au mused at the time if Second Life ever went under, Yoz might come to the rescue once again by taking home some of the servers.

While he probably won't be coming to rescue the Grid should such a day come, it's likely we'll hear from him again on another computer-related project.

A Titanic Misunderstanding

A few years ago, Bixyl Shuftan wrote a much commented-on article about people getting banned from places because of their avatar's appearance. Recently, he was alerted about a protest at the Titanic sim, the protestors saying they were banning furry avatars even though they were following the dress code. But a closer look suggested a somewhat different story.

SL Machinima: Titanic, 100th Aniversary

A Second Life Titanic machinima, "This music video remake was created in remembrance of Titanic's upcoming 100th anniversary 2012 april 15th. At the same time this is a unique way to highlight the visual capabilities of SecondLife, using a real world example. All images are captured within the 3D-virtual world of Secondlife itself. Therefor, it is a technology benchmark and will generate related discussion."

The Titanic in Second Life

With the 100th Anniversary of the voyage and sinking of the famous passenger liner Titanic, the attention of Second Life residents is drawn to the Grid's own Titanic. Opened in 2009, the ship attracts many residents on a daily basis. Some are drawn to the ship's haunting history, some to take a special someone on a date in a place of atmosphere, and some a little of both. This weekend, there are some special events aboard to honor those who perished in the sinking.
