The Annual Archive Reset

 

January First is the neatest the archival description on the front page appears. Normally it's a mix of the names of articles this month, plus the previous months in the year. But once the first article of the new year goes up, the last year "compacts." And so the section looks a little neater, just showing the first article, or first few articles, and the previous years. 

 

And we'll be quickly making it look messy again.

A Glance At The Archives

 

 The start of the new year means a few things for the Newser. Among them, the place on the front page where our archived articles can be accessed looks a lot neater. Usually there's a long list of articles and months. But every January 1, it gets shortened to just what's up for that day, and the previous years. 

So this is about as neat as it gets every year. And well, as you can see, we've been at it for quite a long time. Stay tuned for more.

Before The Newser ...

 

Before the SL Newser, there was the SL Newspaper.

As we look back to our beginning today, we also look back at where for some of the crew the story truly began. Bixyl Shuftan (myself) and Gemma Cleanslate got our start in JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer's Second Life Newspaper. From it's humble start as a blog in 2006, as the months went by it changed into more of a newsletter, and a year later was Second Life's top source of information with a team of reporters. But nothing lasts forever, particularly in virtual reality, and forces beyond the owners' control in real life would force it's closing in June 5, 2010.

For over three years, the Main Page remained up for those interested in reading it. Then in January 2014, it was taken down. While some of the articles can still be accessed through the Internat Archives, it can be difficult. A few stories from it were reposted, notably around May and June 2005 for our fifth anniversary. But the real effort was our SL Newspaper Archives section. It's slow work, so it's a long-term effort. 

We won't be able to post everything as sadly, the other sections are gone, and so are some of the main page articles. But we can do some of them. Recently a little of the humble first few days were reposted, as well as the "Australian Ban" scare, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the goodbye posts of Gemma, myself, and Dana.

While we look to the future, we also remember the past, and take care of things in the present.

More SL Newspaper Archived Articles Up

Over time, the Newser has restored articles from the old SL Newspaper of JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer, which vanished from the net a few years ago. The ones we've restored more recently are in the SL Newspaper Archived. Among them, the two articles I wrote about the Second Life Fifth Birthday (first) (second). So enjoy this little blast from the past.

New Section: SL Newspaper Archived

When Second Life newspaper, the predecessor to the Second Life Newser was closed in June 2010, the front page remained up for a few years before being taken down. Many of the articles remained accessible through files in the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine. Over time, some notable ones have been reprinted in the Newser, often with some commentary of what's happened since concerning the subject.

But lately, it seems the articles from before 2010 on the front page, and all but the latest one on SLN's "Community" have vanished even from there. So we're gradually recovering the ones remaining and posting them in a new section in the Newser: SL Newspaper Archived. Already, we're uploaded articles such as the return of the Svarga sim, the introduction of Viewer 2 and Ozimal bunnies, the closing of the virtual world "There" virtual world, and others. More will be uploaded over time, giving a look at our predecessor paper, and some writers whom were unable to go over with us.
