Eye on the Blog: Fitted Mesh is Here

One longtime problem with mesh outfits was that they didn't always fit avatars quite right. There were attempts to fix the problem, such as the Mesh Deformer project. On Monday however, Linden Lab announced their solution to the problem, Fitted Mesh (also known as liquid mesh), was now part of the official Linden Viewer.

Today, we're happy to announce that Fitted Mesh is available in the main Second Life Viewer! As we've previously blogged, Fitted Mesh gives Second Life content creators the power to craft mesh garments that make avatars look their absolute best. We’d like to thank the vibrant community of creators for their thoughtful feedback and help testing this feature.

In the comments following the announcement, some were clearly happy, "Great news!" Others were less than enthusiastic, "So, none of the mesh templates that were bought before now will do any of this. Basically if the content creators re-rig their mesh we will have to start all over again. Too bad (there) wasn't a way to fix that." A thread on the update was started in the official forums, "Does this mean I don't have to look like a Barbie doll anymore?" with some posters asking questions about the technical details.

Iris Ophelia had a few things to say about Fitted Mesh (article). She felt it still had some flaws, "fitted mesh can and will break ... you may still have to adjust your shape to suit it accordingly; designers, on the other hand, still may not be able to rule out offering their mesh goods in multiple sizes." And for content creators, the update can be a real headache, due to "the current lack of instructional documentation to help designers wrap their heads around the changes." Shai Delacroix was quoted as saying Avastar software "has better documentation on Fitted Mesh than LL does." Still, "Fitted Mesh still fits. Even if it's not perfect, it's a step-forward, which is why Shai told me that she's hopeful about it in spite of the setbacks and the steep learning curve. No matter what way you look at it, that new dress now has a pretty good chance of fitting your shape, instead of you fitting yourself to it."

Drax Files Radio Hour's First Episode

On Friday January 10, the first episode of the "Drax Files Radio Hour" took place. The broadcast took place at 7AM SL time "From an attic somewhere in Berlin" with Draxtor Despres doing the show with Jo Yardley, noted for her "1920s Berlin Project." The show opened with a short "Friendly greetings" by Torley Linden, then after the introductions Draxtor and Jo discussed several topics.

The first subject was Occulus Rift reviving interest in virtual reality. The details and realism attracted a number of fans, though there was one down side: the realism of the experience while moving around while standing still in real life was making some people nauseous. Jo felt Occulus Rift would be used for more than Second Life and computer games. They described Babbage Linden as thinking differently, who felt it would start small and never really go mainstream.

They then talked about the NSA, and it's investigating Second Life. At one point Jo remarked, "seems that the NSA is taking Second Life more seriously than the media." "I don't know if that's good," Draxtor replied, "or very very sad." "A little bit of both?" "At least someone takes us seriously." Drax played in interview with "Ashkin," in which they talked about the NSA investigating Second Life's furry population. Their conclusion was that they often worked in creative fields and were actively involved in programing. There were also worries a Bin Laden avatar could be used to recruit terrorists, Jo and Draxtor comparing it to worries about neo-nazi activity. They also discussed with amusement pop singer Lily Allen confusing bitcoins with Lindens in being offered "hundreds of thousands of bitcoins to perform in Second Life years ago."

There was also a discussion about "fitted mesh" with guests involved with Second Life fashion design. Draxtor also brought up the upcoming "Feed a Smile" event in the Lavender Fields later that day, and concluded with an uncut soundtrack of the Drax Files episode with Scottius Polke, "too much stuff ended up on the cutting room floor."

Eye On The Blog: Linden Lab Launches Fitted Mesh Project Viewer

It has been quite some time since Linden Lab introduced mesh graphics to Second Life. While they have been used to good effect in making realistic-looking and detailed items, unfortunately the clothes made with mesh sometimes fit avatars poorly. If someone wanted to wear such an outfit, they would have to "diet" by making the avatar conform to it's limited specifications. And to quite a number, this was a compromise to their virtual experience they felt they shouldn't have to make, "I came here to look how I want, not how something else wants me to look."

So a solution was sought. Qarl Fizz, the former Qarl Linden, soon developed a "Mesh deformer" which made outfits made with the graphics to conform to an avatar's shape. While others expressed interest, Linden Lab never did. When Qarl announced his departure from being involved with Second Life, he also mentioned no one with the Lab had bothered to comment or answer one of his emails about it.

About a month later, Linden Lab announced it's own solution to the mesh clothing problem in the official blog, "Making Mesh Garments Fit Better," saying they had found a different solution. Their Fitted Mesh Project Viewer added "collision bones" to avatars, which garments would be rigged to.

The Linden Lab development team has studied both approaches, and compared their effectiveness, maintainability, and performance. Neither approach completely eliminates the occasional need for an alpha clothing layer to prevent small parts of the avatar skin from appearing through garments, but both work quite well at resizing garments so that they fit the avatar and move naturally with it. While the collision bones method requires the creator to do some additional rigging, we have decided that because it leverages more of the existing avatar shape system it is likely to be the more maintainable solution and to perform better for a wider range of users.

At this moment, the viewer is still in it's experimental stage and "At this time, the new skeleton should be considered provisional and subject to change; we do not yet recommend selling or buying garments rigged to it. ... any change to the collision bones will likely break garments rigged before the change."
