Fanny Starr To Present Holocaust Discussion on Youtube, Feb, 22

One of the oldest residents in Second Life is FannyStarr Hilltop, Fanny Starr in real life. As a Holocaust survivor, she has on occasion talked about her experiences in Second Life, such as in March 2015 when she spoke at the VWBPE conference. Later this month, she will be having another discussion. But it will be on Youtube, and not Second Life.

"We tried to have it in SL, too many people," Explorer Dastardly, FannyStar's real-life daughter, told the Newser, "At least 1000 or more on live Youtube that we know of. ... The sims would crash, so I asked Spiff, and one idea was Youtube live." As of now, there are no plans for an inworld location of any kind where the event will be discussed, "I wanted to use cookie, the amp theater, but only 40 avatars allowed. But on Youtube you'll be able to ask questions. We will have a moderator."

Despite the efforts of historians and people like her to educate the public, Holocaust denial is still an issue. "It's a very serious issue, on grand scale worldwide." She went on to say the problem wasn't just neo-Nazis and radical Muslims, but people in politics and business whom were either incompetent or just didn't care. She cited one Huffington Post news article about Amazon allowing the sale of books calling the Holocaust a "myth", and a Washington Post story in which this year's annual statement from the White House on International Holocaust Remembrance Day failed to mention the six million Jews whom were murdered. Of the later, she felt was probably a sign of ineptness rather than malice, "We don't know, but its caused a lot of fear and hate. We'll talk about that next Wed. night."

We cannot forget the blessed memories: My family, my late husband, and his family and my late son Morris. I cherish my daughters Hilda, and Helen. I cherish my son-in-law Irwin, my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Relay For Life: A Survivor's THANK YOU!

Words cannot describe how after I did my survivor lap last night and upon getting back to my campsite the most beautiful sight I ever witness and for me to just let go and cry at those who were there to greet me on my return.

I am still in quite a bit of shock at the outpouring of love that awaited me and with all the tears of joy that I had, it was well worth it.

As you know I was bound and determined to get my walk in one way or another and believe me, just like cancer TRIED to stop me, so was sim crashes and lag trying and failed to last night (except for one crash) again.

For me, it was not an option for me to forgo my walk, it just wasn't gonna get by me without me doing it. I was that determined that I could and would do my walk one way or  another.  The end results was needless to say another moment in the history of our relay, another moment in time that will be recorded on my site after I have some time to let it all sink in and to relish what's become a HUGE success in my over coming obstacles and AGAIN showing cancer who is BOSS around  HERE!!!

I guess in retrospect for me to say thank you to each and everyone who met me would take a much longer notecard LOL, but in all sincerity I do want to say thank you to;

Catalina Stalheli, who behind the scenes gathered friends and love ones together for what was so important to me. I had told Catalina I wanted to finally do my lap and told her I would be in to do it.

I was just totally unaware of what was to happen as we made our way around the track, Having Lom on my shoulder and Catalina and another relayer in tow, we walked, even members of the Second Life Cheerleading Squad and even a committee member joined as we got closer back to the campsite and as the transcript that was sent earlier, the rest they say is history!

In closing, again THANK YOU to Catalina Stalheli for doing this and bringing closure to a relay season I won't forget for a long time to be, and to the ENTIRE relay community a big BIG HEARTY HEALTHY THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!

Press Release: Cancer Survivors and Caregivers to be Honored at Relay For Life

Cancer survivors and their caregivers will walk the celebratory first hour at the annual American Cancer Sociery event on July 18 at the Relay For Life regions (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Relay%20For%20Life/80/64/21). The Survivors Hour will start at 10 AM SL time, and anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer may participate. As the survivors walk, other event participants will cheer then on in a demonstration of support and celebration. The five-year survival rate for all cancers has risen to 68 percent, thanks in part to the many colunteers around the world who participate in Relay for Life events in their communities and in Second Life.

The Relay For Life program is a community event where teams and individials set up "campsites" around a track and take turns walking or running for the duration of the event. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times. Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide last year. The money raised supports groundbreaking cancer research, education programs, and critical services for people facing cancer.

Press Release: Gemma Cleanslate "Keeper of the Torch" This Week for the Relay

Today we announce our 7th Keeper.  Each week we take the time to honor one Survivor or Caregiver by naming them Keeper of the Torch.    The SL Torch of Hope is the torch the represents the fire each Relayer has burning brightly within them.  It's the fire of Hope.  It's fueled by the desire to rid the world of cancer.  The color of purple is the color of all cancers.  The purple ribbon is used to honor everyone who has been touched by cancer.  For the shape of the torch, we have taken the inspiration of the purple ribbon and inverted it to hold the fire within.

We encourage each of you nominate the caregiver or survivor in SL that you feel demonstrates a spirit of Hope, the Fire of a Fighter, and of someone who encourages others through their actions. The link for you to nominate others will be sent out later today.  Please take the time and use it.

Right now it is my pleasure to announce this week's Keeper of the Torch.

Not only has she battled her cancer, she has also been highly involved in Relay.  She is like bright spring sunshine after a long winter of cloudy days.  She is so compassionate, and willing to help! You  would never know she was fighting her own battle!

She was suffering from cancer last year and still relayed as hard as she could. From being on our team, to helping out at the Christmas Expo, she was always there. She also still found the strength to work for the SL Birthday, write for the SL Newser, and be a part of Burn 2. Cancer did not slow her down and despite not feeling well she kept on. She is a true warrior in my eyes. This year she has returned and is relaying to show her thanks for still being alive and to be a positive influence on others. She is at almost any event that is for relay and she spreads the purple message as far as she can.

She has shown tremendous strength to continue to do the things she does in Second Life, despite undergoing cancer treatments the past year or so. She is always cheerful and a presence that makes you want to continue fighting on.

Holocaust Survivor Speaks at the VWBPE Conference

Last Friday March 20, Holocaust survivor Fanny Starr (FannyStarr Hilltop) spoke to an audience at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference about her experiences during her ordeals from the Lodz Ghetto to the concentration camp of Bergen Belsen. She was with her real-life daughter Explorer Dastardly onstage, who helped with the discussion. The people there had a number of questions for them about the atrocity, and some related issues.

Relay For Life is back in Second Life!

It’s February! And Relay For Life® of Second Life® is back for some more fun and fundraising!

Teams’ registration for the seventh annual Relay For Life of Second Life opens on February 14 in preparation for fundraising from March to July, culminating in a 24-hour walk around a virtual track.

MamaP Beerbaum, the RFL of SL 2011 Event Chair, said: ‘We’re ready to go! The 2011 committee has been busy working behind the scenes and we have an amazing group of passionate volunteers who are going to make this the most fun and successful Relay For Life that Second Life has seen.’

In a few weeks you will see the new logo rezzing across the grid alongside the familiar fundraising kiosks. This year’s theme is Seasons of Hope. Because every season – Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall – is a season of hope.

After 16 weeks of fun and fundraising, the teams will build campsites for the main event which will take place on July 16-17. Team members, volunteers and members of the SL community will walk a track for 24 hours to Celebrate survivorship, Remember those we have lost, and Fight Back to save lives by making a personal pledge to fight cancer.

About Relay For Life of Second Life

Relay For Life® is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life® in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. In July teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay. The main RFL of SL track event this year will take place on July 16-17. We will walk a virtual track for 24 hours, just like in a real world Relay For Life. Team members build and gather at their team campsites, enjoy live music, participate in fun events, and explore the many Relay sims and the incredible builds by some of Second Life’s top designers, as the event runs overnight and into the next morning.
