 Taken at the SL23B Orpheum Theater. Someone had over his head "Don't mention football!!" Why he didn't want others doing that, I don't know. But with the FIFA championships going on, I could think of one reason.

EOTB: The NFL Alumni Association Virtual Experience (NFLAVX)

 

 This Sunday will be the Superbowl, the championship game each year for the American football season. On the official Second Life blog yesterday, it was more or less stated that there'd be an official event here in Second Life for it. On Thursday February 4, they announced an "NFL Alumni Association Virtual Experience" or NFLAVX. The location this takes place at is the "NFL Alumni Association stadium."

Just in time for the big game! The NFL Alumni Association has established an all-new presence in Second Life that includes a massive multi-region virtual stadium that will be used for several live events including concerts, player appearances and charitable initiatives.

“Sports fans from around the world can hang out, chat and attend events together in Second Life across thousands of immersive virtual world experiences including this all-new virtual stadium built exclusively for this event,” says Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg.  

According the Lab, "several members of the Second Life music community are performing at virtual halftime shows" at the “Madden 'The Yard' Celebrity Challenge." The event is described as "a multi-day charity event" for "Gamers vs Cancer," a fundraiser for the American Cancer society. "The event airs daily at noon through Saturday on ESTV, a 24-7 live linear video channel dedicated to esports that is available across multiple streaming outlets including Roku Channel, Amazon Fire TV and social channels." For those in the stadium, the stream can also be seen on screens over the center of the field.

I decided to take a short peek at the stadium myself (via an alt). It's located in the middle of four sims, NFLA 1, NFLA 2, NFLA 3, and NFLA 4. The map showed an unnamed and not accessible fifth sim. Going inside, the outer ring showed small restaurant areas and what looked like t-shirt display areas. But none of the latter were available for sale. The interior was a huge seating area, with the field set up for a halftime show.

The Lab says future expansions are planned for the stadium grounds, including a museum area later this year. The NFLAVX also has a website (here).

Superbowl Party at Aero Pines

On Sunday late afternoon and evening, the Superbowl, the championship game of American football, took place in Houston Texas between The New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots were the favored team to win having appeared in nine Superbowl games while the Falcons were making their second appearance. The Falcons put up a good fight, 25 points ahead at one time, but the Patriots rallied and with the game forced into overtime scored the win.

Across the planet, 111 million watched the game, broadcasted as far away as Saudi Arabia and Nepal. As the game has become such a big television event even for people not usually into football, some watched it mainly for the commercials or at superbowl parties. One such party was here in Second Life at Aero Pines Park

At one point, park owner Cindy Bolero was leading a squad of cheerleaders on the field. But technical difficulties ended up clearing the sim the field and screen were on. But people could still watch it streamed elsewhere on the Internet, people cheering on their team, or just hoping for a good game, which they got.

Aero Pines is best known for its horseback riding, but has several events a year.

K-SOCCER : Football within Second Life

Second Life isn't really a game. But one can play games in it. This includes traditional sports. Recently Wesley Regenbogen heard about a soccer field (or football as it's called outside the US): K-Soccer. So he went over to take a look. This is also his first article in which he took his new video camera.

Superbowl Party at Aero Pines Park

On Sunday, Aero Pines Pines Park held it's annual Superbowl party. Over forty avatars crowded to party and cheer their favorite of the two teams of Superbowl 49, between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, or just wish for a good game.

People could either party in the stands, or relax in the "tailgate" section in the parking lot where a barbecue cooked up some hot dogs and hamburgers. In both there were kegs of "Lagweiser" beer one could drink from. Someone joked after drinking a few beers in real life, the lag didn't seem as bad.

And of course there were the cheerleaders. A number of park employees, along with a few enthusiastic volunteers from the audience, danced and shook their pom-poms for the crowd. Areo Pines Park owner and curator Cindy Bolero was also there.

For those who don't keep up with real-life news, some were rooting for the Seahawks due to the Patriots being accused of cheating in the "Deflate-gate" controversy. The game was close, but the Patriots pulled off a win.

Winter Update

With January coming to a close, and a number of residents tiring of ice and snow, a number of sims are changing from their winter look back to green. But not all places are experiencing an early Spring. Gemma Cleanslate takes a look back at some wintery places she reported on earlier. One of them is planning a Superbowl party.

The Super Bowl in Second Life

Last Sunday, millions across the United States sat down in front of their TV screens, or attended parties next to a TV, as the biggest game in football, the Super Bowl, took place. In Second Life, there was a Super Bowl party taking place at Areo Pines Park. Grease Coakes dropped in to see how the party went.

Superbowl Party

How many of you, at least in North America, saw the Superbowl last Sunday? Well, a few places in Second Life had special events. For a few clubs, it was simply a special party. But Areo Pines Park went all-out, with a football field placed over what's usually a horse pasture, a tailgate party display, and during the game a huge movie screen showing the game. Plus Aero Pines staff member Cindy Bolero led a cheerleading squad.

Unfortunately, the sheer number of residents filled up the sim during most of the game. And if you did get in, the lag could interfere with what you saw on the movie screen. Still, the people had lots of fun, and most likely Areo Pines will be repeating the event next year.
