Reader Submitted: It's Only A Pixel Moon (My Time With Areal Loonie)

Some longtime readers may remember Areal Loonie, who stood out in his furry bat avatar, in various events such as Luskwood. Inworld since 2005, he was in a number of building and scripting groups. Sadly, Ariel has died. He passed away on February 2.

In this reader submission, DrFran Babcock looks at her time with this unique character, both in Second Life and other virtual worlds, which had some happy moments, and sad.

When A Friend Passes Away

Deaflegacy recently experienced a personal tragedy when one of her closest friends in real life died. Saying goodbye to someone you care about is never easy. It's even harder when that someone departs to the hereafter. Deaflegacy wrote a few words about her friend, mentioning she's not alone in having lost someone they care about.

Ask DrFran: "A Buddy Comes Out"

In recent real-life news, the topic of homosexuality has been making headlines over the issue whether or not the state should recognize gay partners as married. It's not an issue in Second Life as partners could be same-gender from its start. But there can still be problems. DrFran recently got a letter from a resident whom in the past a good friend of his "came out." So what happened, and what did DrFran have to say on the matter?

Happy Rezzday Nydia

On Monday December 12th, Nydia Tungsten, the owner of Club Zero Gravity and the Happy Vixen clubs & the KVXN SL radio station, the head of the FCA club alliance, and a longtime friend of Second Life Newser, had a surprise rezzday party thrown for her by her friends.

The party lasted for a few hours, giving those not in the know a chance to show up and join the fun, including a number of FCA DJs, Green Meadows Ballroom owner Perri Prinz, and Daaneth Kivioq of the Relay for Life team "Passionate Redheads."

Nydia was very happy for the party, thanking everyone for this display of friendship.

A Message From Daaneth Kivioq

Earlier today (Sunday May 1st), I was contacted by Daaneth Kivioq, by way of a voice chat. He asked me to teleport to Southern Colorado, saying there were a few things he wanted to explain.

Getting there, still in voice, he told me he wanted me to pass a message on, "I'd like to thank everyone. I can't begin to express how grateful I am to have to have such a bunch of friends. I couldn't have gotten through this without Sabine (McGettigan) ... I am so grateful to have her here. ... I'd like to thank Shockwave for his kind offer to pay for the sim. Southern Colorado is not going anywhere. It has automatic payment set up."

"I'd like to explain what happened. The stroke, it was a complete shock. The hardest part, you don't know what you really lost. The ability to type, that's a hard problem. There's no way to describe it. It hits you like a hammer without warning ... I had the presence of mind to stay conscious, call for help. One of my good friends was around to help me. ..."

The connection began to go bad, and Daaneth told me he had to go, saying he was very much looking forward to meeting up with everyone.

I couldn't see Daan's av at all, and he himself told me he could only see a cloud. But the important thing was our friend was on his way back.

"Getting stronger, every day."

Here’s to You, Kara Nakamori

Second Life can be one experience after another, but for many what makes it valuable are the people we share it with. And for those starting out, the people we run into can make a difference. For myself, one such person whom helped make my early days in Second Life worthwhile was Kara Nakamori. Her friendly manner made her someone I still think of three years after her departure from the Grid.
