The 2025 Spoonful of Sugar Festival

The Spoonful of Sugar Festival is taking place in Second Life. From September 6 to Sunday September 21, the shopping and fundraising event will be taking place across six sims. It is to help raise money for the international group "Doctors Without Borders."

... we will be working behind the scenes to build a magnificent festival for you this September. We’ll be smiling too—as we hammer nails, plant gardens, and coordinate over 200 creators, performers, and events for you to enjoy and support. ... This year, join us for an unforgettable journey to Regency and 1800s England! Expect grand balls, garden parties, lively gossip, and a chance to time travel to another era while making a real difference in this one.

Around the sims there are shops where one can get various goods. from indoor and outdoor furnishings, to breedable pets, and more. Some of these are in gacha machines. Pay attention as not every item sends 100% of the Lindens to charity.

Every day but Monday there are smaller events. Most of these are music performances, but there are also some sports events.

The Spoonful of Sugar Festival

The "Spoonful of Sugar Festival" is back in Second Life. This is a fundraiser event to raise money for the Doctors Without Borders charity. Based in Switzerland, the group helps the sick and injured in over 70 countries, notably where conflict and natural disaster have struck.

While we do not "earmark" our funds raised for MSF for any specific aspect of what they do, at the Spoonful Of Sugar, we do
like to choose an area of their work for our focus and education. While in Tahiti we are looking more at environmental issues and impacts MSF/Doctors Without Borders faces. Please join us at destinations around our planet - which are not only astoundingly beautiful and wealthy, but at the same time devastatingly vulnerable and poor. Lets all learn and understand this connection between environmental imbalance and the illness, safety and resource insecurity facing so many on our planet.

The event area covers ten sims. Most are full of  shopping areas with items up for sale with all or part of the money going to the charity. This includes at least one limited edition item on sale only at the Festival. There's also the "Get Crabby Hunt." There are also occasional music parties with DJs (the one I saw was in the southernmost sim). There are also auctions and raffles for giftcards,

The scenery was picturesque, with many of the stores set up as island huts. There were also groups of script-controlled islanders dancing and playing music, as if welcoming the attendees. For shoppers, there is a variety of items to get from pets, to furniture, to Halloween goods, to farming game supplies, and more.

For more information, check the event blog at https://www.thesosfestival.com/ (note, for some reason, a few of the pages have warnings on some browsers as of the writing of this article)

Fundraisers For Earthquake Relief

The earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6 was a truly devastating one. Registering 7.8 on the Richter scale, over 50,000 have been confirmed dead, mostly in Turkey. Shoddy building construction appears to be the major factor in why the death count has been so high. But this is just part of the problem. Thousands remain homeless, and there are medical worries as cold temperatures and lack of housing and food often result in disease.

Doctors Without Borders set up a donation area in TONE2 in the Ever Ever Land sim. Head onto Ever Ever Land (101/216/22) and donate what you like.

A few days ago, Mia Wallace of Burners Without Borders pointed out a fundraising party. This was at Orginia at Happy Clam Island. It was at late Saturday night February 18.

Awesome initiative!!....BWBSL supports this event!!>> Two hours of music from Turkish & Syrian producers & artists who create the music we dance to. All tips will be donated for earthquake relief to the Red Cross/Red Crescent & Doctors Without Borders. Bring your friends (& your lindens)

It was quite an enthusiastic event, and another example of helping out people around the world in real life through this virtual world.

Chilbo's "Chilbowl" Bowling Alley Raising Funds for Japan

Taking a look at the Chilbo website, the place in Second Life known for it's builders and artists has been raising funds to help out Japan since March.

From March 15th the normally free bowling lanes were set to collect Lindens, which went to the Doctors without Borders charity to help Japan following it's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

“It is my hope that Chilbo and the SL community at large, can once again step up to help another community in a time of need,” states Chibi Lexenstar, co-manager of the bowling alley. “Much like our efforts to assist the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, I believe our individual measures can create a synergistic effect especially at a time like this. Let’s all contribute to the rescue and rebuilding efforts of a country that has seen immense tragedy over the past several days.”

The picture and article were done by Chibi Lexenstar.
