Fundraisers For Earthquake Relief

 

 

 The earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6 was a truly devastating one. Registering 7.8 on the Richter scale, over 50,000 have been confirmed dead, mostly in Turkey. Shoddy building construction appears to be the major factor in why the death count has been so high. But this is just part of the problem. Thousands remain homeless, and there are medical worries as cold temperatures and lack of housing and food often result in disease.

 

Doctors Without Borders set up a donation area in TONE2 in the Ever Ever Land sim. Head onto Ever Ever Land (101/216/22) and donate what you like.

 

 

A few days ago, Mia Wallace of Burners Without Borders pointed out a fundraising party. This was at Orginia at Happy Clam Island. It was at late Saturday night February 18.

UGNAY Benefit For Earthquake Relief

 

 On Saturday July 30, a benefit concert was held in the Weelandia sim. The event was to raise money to help people in the Philipines affected by an earthquake that had taken place a few days before. It was called the UGNAY Benefit.

 

I would be told that there have been five performers. I would see two on stage,  RyeShure Peony (RyeShure Resident) who described herself in her profile as having "more than 20 years of musical expertise," and Mae Loved (Mae Cliassi) who was also RyeShure's manager. 

 

Donations were dropped into the tip jar on stage throughout the event. With a half hour to go, there was 60,000 in the jar.  At ten minutes to go, the amount was 75,000 Lindens. At 3 minutes to the close, the 100,000 Linden mark was crossed. The event closed to cheers, and a "Riverdance" from the tinies among the crowd.

Real-Life News: Southern California Hit By Two Earthquakes

Twice in two days, California was hit by two strong earthquakes. On Thursday July 4, a 6.4 quake hit near the town of Ridgecrest, a town about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles. This was followed by a more powerful quake, a 7.1, also near Ridgecrest but about ten miles away.There are numerous reports of fires and minor injuries. But no one seems to have been seriously hurt so far.

The second earthquake was felt as far away as Los Angeles and Las Vegas Nevada, and was the strongest in the state in about twenty years. There have been a total of 2000 aftershocks of both quakes. Ridgecrest has about 29,000 residents and is near the Naval Air Weapons China Lake facility, which has been closed pending inspections.

The events were the subject of numerous talk and discussion in Second Life groups and SL Discord servers, from concerns that the virtual world might be disrupted to well-wishes to residents in California.

"Fashion for Food" Charity for Nepal Earthquake Victims by "Join Hands"

While the Relay for Life continues, there are other charities going on in Second Life. Among them is "Fashion for Food" by "Join Hands," set up to help aid the people of Nepal, a small landlocked country between India and China that is home to some of the tallest mountains in the world. Unfortunately, the same forces that created these mountains mean the country is the scene of occasional earthquakes. And on April 25 the country was hit by a devastating 7.8 scale quake, that has left thousands dead and injured and millions in need of aid. Complicating the situation is the approaching monsoon season, and the shortage of clean water and sanitary facilities.

According to Inara Pey, "Join Hands" was formed by Valsnia and Ruby Ornamental. "Fashion for Food" is their first event, a four-day fundraiser that began Wednesday May 13 with a fashion show and and after show party. Around the fundraiser location are a number of items of clothing and apparel for sale, with money raised going to the World Food Program. Further events are a DJ event on Thursday May 14 at Noon SL time, and the closing party is on Saturday May 16 at 2PM SL time.

Chilbo's "Chilbowl" Bowling Alley Raising Funds for Japan

Taking a look at the Chilbo website, the place in Second Life known for it's builders and artists has been raising funds to help out Japan since March.

From March 15th the normally free bowling lanes were set to collect Lindens, which went to the Doctors without Borders charity to help Japan following it's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

“It is my hope that Chilbo and the SL community at large, can once again step up to help another community in a time of need,” states Chibi Lexenstar, co-manager of the bowling alley. “Much like our efforts to assist the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, I believe our individual measures can create a synergistic effect especially at a time like this. Let’s all contribute to the rescue and rebuilding efforts of a country that has seen immense tragedy over the past several days.”

Japan's Nuclear Fashion Disaster

Over 500K Lindens Raised for Japanese Relief at “Go for Japan”

On the weekend from Saturday March 19 to Sunday Mach 20, the “Go for Japan” fundraiser took place in Gwampa's Dance Camp. Also known as the Pacific Crisis Fund Benefit Concert, the event lasted for over 40 hours involved many musicians, and raised over five hundred thousand lindens for the American Red Cross for their efforts in Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country.

The event was set up at the four-corner meeting place at four sims, Pango Pango, Zeide Kamp, Gwampa Castle, and Bali Bali. The stage was set up at the Pango Pango corner with the official location of the event at Zeide Kamp (238, 241, 21), even though two other sim corners were available for the audience. Besides dancing around in the grass, one could also sit on some pillows in Bali Bali, or lie on some other pillows floating over Zide Kamp and Gwampa Castle.

There were a few dozen musicians taking part in the fundraiser. Among them were Lyn Carlberg, FunkyFreddy Republic, Lexie Luan, CraigLyons Writer, and more.

On the night of Sunday March 20, the total raised slowly crept up to the half million mark. Finally while Edward Kyomoon was playing, the total amount raised reached 500,000. The sight was greeted with applause and cheers of “Woooot!!” Edward continued to sing, and at the end told the audience, "Thanks for all your generosity, helping out the Red Cross," before handing the stage to Grif Bamaisin, the last musician of the event.

As even the most casual of news readers knows, the earthquake and tsunami wrecked enormous damage to Japan. One estimate of the economic damage puts it as 180 billion dollars. Some entire small villages were wiped out. One estimate puts the number of dead and missing at over 16,000, a toll almost always seen from a disaster striking a Third World country, not one of humankind’s most advanced societies. Curiously unlike previous disasters such as Haiti, there have been few fundraisers in real-life in comparison. With Japan having a debt more than twice the total dollar amount of it’s economy, fundraisers like “Go to Japan” will be a welcome relief.

Linden Bears for Japan Tsumani/Earthquake Reflief

With Japan devastated by the worst earthquake ever recorded there, and the ensuing tsunami that sent a wall of water that swept miles inland, people are looking for ways to help. Linden Labs is among those collecting funds for charity, by selling teddy bears with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Our thoughts are with all of those who are suffering in the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific. We encourage all Second Life Residents to support the relief efforts however they can, and we would like to help.

We have created a couple of special Linden Bears (one sitting, one wearable) and set them for sale. We will donate all proceeds from sales of our bears to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

Prices for the bears range from 300 Linden dollars to 3000L.
