"The 1st Question's" Season Finale, and Co-Host Hydra's Farewell

Sunday December 11th marked the last show of the season for the noted Second Life game show "The 1st Question," hosted by Pooky Amsterdam and Hydra Shaftoe. Three of the top winners this year were invited back in a contest of champions.

Originally scheduled on December 4th, the show was postponed a week due to technical difficulties. And this Sunday, glitches threatened to stop the show again. Fortunately, regulars such as comedian Lauren Weyland had no trouble bringing out chuckles from the others to pass the time. Plus, there was Pooky's band of tiny friends, doing a "Tiny Carolers" routine.

~*~ It's beginning to look alot like Wootmas! ~*~ ~*~ All across the shire you go! ~*~ ~*~ Take a look at the village chalet, ~*~ ~*~ The snowmen and the sleigh, ~*~ ~*~ With candy canes and tinsel all aglow! ~*~ ~*~ Its beginning to look a lot like Wootmas! ~*~ ~*~ Tinies in every store! ~*~ ~*~ But the nommiest site to see ~*~ ~*~ Is the waffles that will be ~*~ ~*~ Inside your own front door. ~*~

Pooky tried a few things, including appearing in a tiny sheep avatar, which looked like a cartoonish sight next to Hydra's wolflike black anthro husky appearance. Eventually she logged back on in an alt, and the show continued. Pooky apologized for the delays, praising the audience for their paitence. She commented if she ever got stranded on a deserted island, she'd be confident of rescue with this group of people with her.

Phelan Corrimal, ZenMonso Wormser, Romane Levee were the previous show winners whom were the contestants for this show. Besides that it was a show among former champions, the show was unique that in the "Word Up" in which the audience was asked to judge which made-up word of the players was the best, it was a three way tie. Pooky gave each of them full credit for that part of the show. The contest was a hard-fought one between the three men, but eventually ZenMonso Wormser emerged as the winner, and the season champion.

The audience was a little sad that this was the last show until next year, but they were also sad about an announcement. Co-host Hydra Shaftoe announced this was his last appearance. He didn't have any problems with Pooky, offering to help out next episode with troubleshooting behind the scenes. He simply felt that with nearly 140 shows behind him, it was time for him to move on. The announcement was greeted with sadness by many in the audience, including one whom had just seen the show for the first time, and thought Hydra made a great co-host.

With his sharp voice and quick wit, it's fair to say Hydra Shaftoe helped make the 1st Question what it is, and wherever he goes, a number are wishing him well.

Treet TV Stops Live Broadcasting

On Thursday July 7th, Treet TV’s Wiz Nordberg sent a message to all producers of the Second Life network’s program producers. Due to real-life matters, all live video production would be suspended indefinitely.

What is really occurring is a shift of priorities for us. Because the market is still quite small, Texas and I need to engage in Treet only part time. Using 100% of that time to film has left us with time for nothing else. Exciting changes to the website, new promotional features, and an exciting “Timeline of Virtual History” archive site never even have been started, not to mention many improvements in distribution, iPad and iPhone support, etc. We feel such innovations are necessary in this industry. So, shifting our priorities away from live filming is important for us to create more enabling technologies to help people contribute shows, manage shows, and get the most out of archives. We are committed to enhancing and enabling the community. Our website, resources, and streams will not only remain live, but we’ll be seeking ways to expand their availability to more and more people, and establish programs for showing people how we’ve achieved what we’ve achieved.

The website, and the storing of footage on archives will continue. What has changed is the shows will no longer appear on the Internet live. This will be considered a setback to many fans of the shows as some can’t always get to the sets on time, and for some shows like the Snail Races, the live feeds were needed to see what was going on between the distances and the lag.

For fans of Treet TV, this is sad news, in addition to the announcement of the popular “Tonight Live” show being canceled days ago. For it’s shows, this will mean new challenges and adjustments. For competing networks which never had live broadcasting, this may be an opportunity for their shows to achieve better ratings, an advantage of their competition now gone. For those organizing major events such as the Relay for Life, this will mean some changes as no longer, at least for a while, can they count on a live audience beyond what they can see inworld.

*Addition* Apparently, there will still be some live coverage of Relay for Life events (check comments).

Interview by Sam Nightfire at Virtual Tonight

On Sunday at 8 PM SL time, I was at the set of the Virtual Tonight talk show at the invitation of hostess Sam Nightfire for an interview. Of the several guests, I was first.

The interview went well. I probably could have done a slightly better job, but at least my “voice for newspapers” didn’t trip and stammer. The questions about the paper varied from how did I get my start, to what do we usually write about, to can readers also submit things for the paper to publish, and others.

Besides myself, Sam had several others on the show, from fashion expert and host Tempest Hennesy, to Thinkerer Melville, a "retired Professor of Psychology, community advocate and promoter of virtual worlds," to stand-up comedian Elron Priestman, whom he and I traded witty comments in group chat, and a KISS tribute band from Canuck entertainment. While not a KISS fan, I have to say the musicians put quite a bit of effort into their performance.

I saw a few friends of mine in the audience, and a few friends of theirs. Thank you for coming. For those who didn’t , Sam told me the show should be on the Virtual World Network Website (http://www.virtualworldnetwork.tv/) by Monday February 14th.

If Sam seems familiar to regular readers, she should. A few months ago, she came to me having heard about the paper, and was interested in helping out. It was soon obvious that she was someone with both confidence and a good head on her shoulders with business sense. She already had a job with real-life media, but considered it important that there were thriving outlets in Second Life, and was willing to help out. She did for a while, but her talents were discovered by the Virtual World Network. We parted on good terms, remaining friends.

Had she stayed, she probably would have soon become the editor.

Virtual Tonight is still a new show, with a new crew learning the ropes and the routine. But Sam picked a group with talent. It won’t be long before their ratings start giving Paisley Beebe’s “Tonight Live,” a serious run for it’s money.

Sam also posts regularly on Facebook, never at a loss for a witty comment, and has a lively group of friends. Those checking her out there may see a few of my replies.
