Relay Announcement: DJ Cynthia at The USO Dance

 

On Wednesday March 29, join The SHB Gems Relay team, and the Sunbeamer team's DJ Cynthia as they hold the Third Annual USO Dance. "Come join us for some great big band sounds! Come in uniform if you can, or just come as you are as long as you come."

Last Friday, the Relay for Life's Team SHB Gems held a "Bring Your Own Kiosk" USO show. The event was held with DJ Cynthia from the Sunbeamer team. The event was held from 7-9PM at the Deminis sim. Cynthia would also send the Newser a few pictures of the event.

While the music was from several decades ago, everyone there enjoyed them and had fun.

Two Memorial Day Events

On Memorial Day weekend, no doubt there were a number of salutes to the US military. Among them was a USO tribute show held by the Relay for Life's Second Life Cheerleading Squad. It was held at the Agrippa sim, starting at 9AM SL time, and went on for hours with performers such as Lyric Serendipity and Ronnie Artano. The event raised thousands of Linden dollars for the Relay team.

On Memorial Day itself, Club Cutlass would have it's own Memorial Day event, intended as a tribute to fallen veterans. Cynthia Farshore, a veteran herself, played a number of military songs, as well as some pop music associated with war movies and TV shows. People were encouraged to either dress in uniform, or in red, white, and blue, with a prizes of 1000L for the best male and female. The place was also decked out with a few national flags.

Liska Fuchs won the prize for the ladies with her red, white, and blue dress. The male prize was won by Zorro Wuramunga.

Veteran's Isle's monthly fundraising concert was not held this Sunday, but will happen on Sunday May  31.

"The Outsiders" At The Bob Hope Theater

On Tuesday February 4, the Bob Hope Theater was the scene of a performance by "The Outsiders." The event was to celebrate the anniversary of the USO.

Starting at 6pm The Outsiders kick off a new season with our HAPPY BIRTHDAY USO SHOW and a tribute to BOB HOPE.HONORING Freedom and the American Way through powerful Dance , Music and it's Moods! Today and Everyday we Honor our Vets, active duty and first responders protecting  the free world.

When interviewed about the theater last month, Paul Woodrunner had this to say about the group, "The Outsiders are about vets and bringing about an awareness of veterans, and sometimes their needs. It is about heroes mainly. The Outsiders are the dance troupe that calls Bob Hope Theater home. We are all about first responders  veterans active duty military."

The USO (full name United Service Organizations) is not part of the military or connected to the US Government, but a "nonprofit-charitable corporation that provides live entertainment, such as comedians, actors and musicians, social facilities, and other programs to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families." It was formed on February 4 1941 by Mary Ingraham after a request from President Franklin Roosevelt, bringing together six organizations to help, the Salvation Army, the YMCA, the Young Women's Christian Association, the National Catholic Community Service, the National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. The idea was "The government was to build the buildings, and the USO was to raise private funds to carry out its main mission: boosting the morale of the military." Although the organization is best known for it's work in World War Two, it has continued to provide entertainment for US servicemen since, including in the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns.

The February 4 show was given in a packed sim, with 59 avatars in the area. Over the next hour, there were several performances on stage. One had one single dancer, Allyson Solo, dancing to "Take My Breath Away" on a couple fighter plane wings. "Let's show some respect here people," one man called out, "Ally has worked very hard to bring you folks her best effort here."

While some of the women on stage might have had revealing outfits, there was also one group of men, led by Antonia (Murhdur) showing some chests to the ladies in the audience, "Oh yeah, Now that's some Sweet Eye Candy!"

Each performance on stage was met with hearty applause from the audience. "Great show-- and great tribute, All!" "Thank you all for coming and joining us tonight!" "Thank you Paul and group!"

The next show planned is for Monday March 30, "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."

USO Show at Sacred Ground

 On July 4, I went to a USO show at Sacred Ground in the Urban Style sim. Performed by "The Outsiders," this performance packed the sim, with over fifty avatars on the stage and in the audience.

From a little after 6PM to 7PM SL time, there were various performances on stage, celebrating America and taking pride in the freedoms the country has to offer. There were songs such as "Living in America," "American Saturday Night," "God Bless the U.S.A.," "Born Free" by Kid Rock, "The Star Spangled Banner," and others. One was "Dance With My Father," one performer saying, "This song is dedicated to the one man who shaped who I am today....my Dad. A ...proud WWII veteran, my dad was my biggest supporter."

Near the end, the audience was invited to hop on stage, "Please join us on stage," and many did. "Happy 4th of July! We are so glad you came out to see us! Please come back to visit Sacred Ground!" "Big thanks to all those to put this together." "Thanks for sponsoring this show, Biker and Sarrah."

Biker Sharkfin, one of the owners, called out, "Thank you everyone.  You all are awesome.   We love you all.  Thanks for coming to Sacred Ground tonight." Sarrah Spark, another owner, told the performers, "Thanks again Outsiders, you rock!"
