World Space Week at The National Space Society

 

 

It's "World Space Week," defined by Wikipedia as "an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition" in ninety-five countries. The theme this year is "Satellites Improve Life." So the National Space Society invites residents to "Come learn about the many ways satellites are pivotal in producing the food we eat at our Farm-Space Connection exhibit created by Starfarer."

Arriving at their sim over three thousand meters above, to my right was a globe. It was their exhibit. Going inside, there was information in a number of boards.

When the first satellite was launched in 1957, not many would have known quite what an impact this technology would start to have on the way so many of us interact with the world around us.

Fast forward more than half a century, and few industries benefit more from satellite technology than agriculture. From the day they helped improving weather forecasts, farmers have been fans of those orbiting objects in the atmosphere. But these days, satellites are impacting farming in far bigger ways.

News In Brief

A lot has been going on, and only a little time to write about it. So it's time to write a little about what's going on, and do something more in depth later.

The Second Life Renaissance Festival concluded on Sunday October 4. Just before it ended were two Linden events. On Thursday October 1 was the Linden and Mole jousting event, in which Abnor Mole won, followed by some sparing between the Lindens and Moles and some residents. On Friday October 2 was the Lindens in the Pillory, which was a "jail and bail" with a twist.

In the Sunweaver/Angel community, the Happy Vixen opened it's new Halloween Haunt area: Purrfection Estates (236, 219, 24)   

World Space Week is this week, and the National Space Society has something at their sim for it: National Space Society (104/165/3004)

Nydia Tungsten announced the publishing of her second novel on Amazon: "Switched Destinies - Kevin's Return," holding a party inworld to celebrate.

Furry Fashion has a Halloween area, "filled with merchants spooky wares, a maze and a hunt!" Read more about it here: (link).

Announcement: World Space Week Party Today

World Space Week is almost over. After a few other celebrations by the National Space Society, they're about to have their last one, courtesy of musician Cypress Rosewood.

The legendary SL space musician, Cypress Rosewood performs his musical magic with flutes, guitars and synthesizers. He is a metamedia treat to see live in concert.

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events. The first is the launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957. The second is the signing of the "The Outer Space Treaty" on October 10, 1967.

Announcement: World Space Week Oct 4-10

The National Space Society and the International Spaceflight Museum are teaming up to celebrate World Space Week during the week of October 4 - 10 [ https://www.worldspaceweek.org/ ]. The 2019 theme is “The Moon:  Gateway to the Stars.” According to a UN General Assembly resolution on 6 December 1999:  “The General Assembly declares 4 to 10 October World Space Week to celebrate each year at the international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition”.

We would like to have space-related presentations and panel discussions throughout the week...extra credit for connection to this year's topic or the UN event's purpose. Potential presenters: please feel free to propose your own topic! World Space Week in Second Life

It's World Space Week this week. It was 61 years ago today in which the Russians (then the USSR) launched Sputnik, the first satellite into space. Second Life has numerous space-themed locations, the best known being the International Space Museum at Spaceport Alpha (114,142,23).

Another place is the Sagan Planetarium at Aspen (199, 119, 3729). which has a small museum and a Planetarium. One can also find a laser tag maze on the sky platform at (133,168,3720).

The National Space Society is having an activity of their own. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, they're doing a kind of poll in which residents are asked to rank the probability of certain kinds of Trek technology from warp drive, to transporters, to replicators. You can head there to take part, or just look around, at National Space Society (128,152,1261)

There's a lot more to see space-wise, but part of the fun of space exploration is, well, exploring.

The National Space Society in Second Life Celebrates Space Week

October 4 to 10 is considered World Space Week," and the National Space Society in Second Life has been holding activities.

Come join the International Spaceflight Museum (ISM) and the National Space Society in Second Life (NSS in SL) in celebrating World Space Week, Oct. 4-10 2013.  This year's theme is "Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth":  http://www.worldspaceweek.org/wsw/index.php .

On Saturday, the group held a party complete with a DJ, the theme being their "Mars Fashion Challenge." On Sunday at 3PM, Shanna Starship and Tara Li held a panel discussion at the International Space Museum at the Spaceport Alpha sim. They and the audience discussed the challenges in colonizing, and teraforming, the surface of Mars. People dropping by were also encouraged to pick up T-shirts and coffee cups as souvenirs.
