Hurricane Milton Heading To Florida

 

 

 Just as the southeast US has yet to begin to recover from Hurricane Helene, which landed a little more than a week ago, there's another headed it's way: Hurricane Milton.  This powerful storm has rapidly intensified into a Category Five, and is headed to Florida, set to make landfall near the city of Tampa. 

The storm is set to make landfall early Thursday morning, with Hurricane warnings across much of the west coast of the Florida peninsula, and tropical storm warnings and watches as far north as Charleston South Carolina. It's pretty much certain central Florida will see numerous power outages and Internet disconnections, and there's a risk others not far away will be as well.

Hurricaine Idalia Threatens American Southeast

 

 

 Just after Hurricane Hilary caused a scare for California, there's another major storm taking aim at Florida, and on course to barrel through Georgia and South & North Carolina: Hurricane Idalia. Projected to strengthen to Category Three before it lands, there's the possibility of it getting still stronger to Cat 4 when it hits the Florida coast this morning. The storm is expected to remain at hurricane strength as it heads through Georgia, and only weakening to tropical storm status in South Carolina, and continue on through southeast North Carolina, being out at sea only very early Friday morning.

 

People in the path of the storm can expect a strong possibility of electrical, and Internet, outage, and some on the outskirts may experience some interruptions as well. So some of us in Second Life may be offline, or notice some friends who are usually on being off.

800,000 Still Without Power Following Hurricane Ida, 46 Dead In New York As Storm Causes Flooding

 

When Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana on Sunday August 27, it caused a huge amount of damage with over a million losing power in the state and next door Mississippi. But the storm wasn't done yet. It's still powerful remnants moved inland, eventually reaching the northeast US, where it caused major flooding in several states, notably New York City where some were trapped in their basements and drowned. There was video footage of one of the city's subway's choked with floodwaters. The storm has been blamed for 46 deaths, and counting.

Back in Louisiana, power is still out for over 800,000 people, with nine people confirmed dead. Numerous gas stations are described as having long lines of people waiting to get fuel, and some grocery stores are reportedly rationing certain foods and ice as people anticipating gasoline shortages are stocking up to reduce trips by car.

Due to it's level of destruction, "Ida" will be retired as a name for Hurricanes.

Hurricane Henri to Slam into US Northeast

Residents in the American northeast are preparing for a rare hurricaine, and possible power and Internet outage, from Hurricane Henri. In the past 24 hours, the tropical storm has been upgraded to hurricane status, and much of the New England and New York and New Jersey coasts have tropical storm and hurricane warnings. Second Life residents, and everyone else, in these areas may face power and Internet outages.

Hurricane Sally Set to Hit Gulf Coast Tonight

Residents whom live on the US Gulf Coast between the vicinity of New Orleans and Pensacola Florida are facing a Hurricane Warning as Hurricane Sally closes in. The storm has become a Category Two hurricane with winds about 90 miles an hour near the eye.

The storm has been slowing down as it approaches the coast, which is allowing it to become stronger. By the time it reaches the coast late tonight or very early tomorrow morning, it is expected to have winds of 105 miles an hour near the eye. Flooding is expected as far inland as Birmingham Alabama with tropical storm force winds about as far. Residents in the path of severe weather may be without power, and Internet, for a few days, possibly several.

Hurricane Laura To Hit Gulf Coast, Travel Inland

Residents in Louisiana and much of Texas are bracing for Hurricane Laura. With winds up to 140 miles an hour just outside it's center, it is expected to make landfall tonight near the Texas-Louisiana border.

Major flooding along the coast is expected as the storm surge brings higher than normal tides from Galveston and Freeport Texas to New Orleans and Gulfport Mississippi, and will likely be thirty miles inland from the impact of the center. By Thursday, the storm will be in Arkansas, down to a tropical storm, but still dangerous, and the remnants are expected to travel north then east over the next few days.

Power outages along the storm's path in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas are expected to last many days, which will also mean no Internet. To Second Life residents in it's path or even nearby, please be careful

"Extremely Active" Hurricaine Season Predicted

The hurricane that turned tropical storm that hit the east coast last week could very well be just the start of some weather troubles for some of us. A report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) forecasted "an 'extremely active' season with 19 to 25 named storms."

The forecast is twice what an average hurricane season has, and includes the nine named storms so far this hurricane season. Part of the reason for the predicted high number of storms is the warmer than normal temperatures in the tropical Atlantic areas.

As the hurricane season only just started, people in places likely to be hit by hurricanes and tropical storms should be prepared for possible power outages (and a disruption of activity online and in Second LIfe, and the possibility of having to evacuate if a particularly severe hurricane heads their way.

Tropical Storm Isaias Hits East Coast

It's a stormy week for the East Coast. On Sunday, Hurricane Isaias reached Florida. Slightly reduced in speed, it became Tropical Storm Isaias as it began going north along it's coast, hitting Georgia and South Carolina on Monday. As this article is being written, it's hitting the coast of North Carolina, and as the day goes on will continue to travel northeast, hitting Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. On Wednesday, remnants of the storm will hit New York and New England.

With it's high winds, the storm will cause many power outages in it's path. This includes the areas where yours truly and one of the Newser reporters lives. So for some Second Life users, power may be out for a while. In the meantime, those in it's path keep your batteries and canned goods (and books) for a possible day without power.

New Toulouse Hit By Storm

Earlier this month on December 8, the sim of New Toulouse was hit by a storm. The result was some flooding in the streets. Francesca Alva took a series of pictures of the scenery. Fortunately, the water soon retreated, and there was no major damage, a party at a local venue soon following.

New Toulouse is best known for it's annual Mardi Gras event, which in 2020 will take place earlier than usual, probably on the weekend of February 22/23.

Hurricane Update

Following it's turn to the north after heading to Florida, Hurricane Dorian has been battering the East Coast as it makes it's way north. Thursday it was hitting South Carolina, and by Thursday night it was North Carolina's turn. In South Carolina alone, more than a quarter million are without power. This number does not count those who lost it in other states.

Today the storm will be hitting southeast Virginia. After that, by Saturday morning Massachusetts' coastal areas will be getting high winds. then the storm will go through Nova Scotia and Labrador.


If someone whom is usually on Second Life on Friday's isn't, they might be in one of the areas affected by the hurricane. For those yet to be hit, be prepared.

Hurricane Update

For the Bahamas, Hurricane Dorian has been nothing short of devastating. The most powerful storm to hit the islands, seven deaths have been recorded, a total expected to go up after the departure of high winds allows for better searches. Having been heading slowly in the direction of Florida for the past several days, the storm has started to make it's turn northward while it's weakened to a Category Two. So while the Sunshine State is getting plenty of wind and rain, it looks like it's going to avoid a direct hit.

The bad news, the storm will be heading up the coast from Florida, to Georgia, to South Carolina, to North Carolina, to SE Virginia. Residents at or near the coastal areas of these states are urged to keep a close eye on weather reports for the next few days. At the very least, make plans for a day or so of lost power (including the local gas station and ATM). Closer to the path of the eyewall of the storm, homes could experience real damage.

Hurricane Dorian Threatens East Coast

Real life is very likely to bring some unpleasant news to the East Coast of the United States soon. After coming through the eastern Caribbean, Hurricane Dorian has been gathering strength and heading to the Bahamas as a Category Four storm. Heading to Florida, there are signs the storm will turn northward and weaken somewhat. Unfortunately, this means that Georgia and North and South Carolina are threatened. Residents in the affected area are likely to experience power outages, and possibly worse in places where the storm makes a direct hit.

Those in the southeast, keep an eye on the weather.

Hurricane Michael Makes Landfall On Florida Panhandle Today

A month after Hurricane Florence threatened the East Coast, another storm is threatening to knock out power to thousands: Hurricane Michael. With winds up to 130 mph around it's eye, it was upgraded to Category Three and forecast to go to Category Four. Hurricane warnings are across the Florida panhandle, and tropical storm watches go all the way from the Louisiana border to Tampa. The storm is projected to go northeast, with over half of Georgia having storm warnings, and tropical storm watches extending well into North Carolina.

The storm has the potential to knock out power over a wide area, with the Florida panhandle and southern Georgia hardest hit. But unlike Hurricane Florence, the storm is faster moving and will not linger as long. So power should be restored quicker (though as some friends will tell you, there's always that one block that the power company takes their sweet time). So if you have online friends in this area, they might be offline for a little while.

An Active Weekend

Quite a few things happened this weekend in Second Life. Hurricane Florence slammed into the American southeast, hitting coastal areas with high winds and causing flooding as it moved inland, knocking out power (and Internet) to close to a million people. The Pixel to Pixel Foundation had it's Ninth Anniversary party (pictured above). The "Spoonful of Sugar"began, and will last for the rest of the month. Stay tuned for more information on these, and other goings-on.

Hurricane Florence Update: Making Landfall

Hurricane Florence is making landfall in North Carolina, at winds of 90 mph around it's eyewall. Already, over 170,000 have lost power, and the number promises to go much higher. There are also over 150 needing rescue in the city of New Bern NC.

The storm is expected to linger in the general area for a few days, crawling westward into North and South Carolina, and causing flooding well inland, with Georgia also being affected. Then the remnants will turn north, dumping large amounts of rain onto eastern Kentucky and Tennessee, West Virginia, and western Virginia.

It has been estimated some places could be out of power for days to weeks.

Hurricane Florence Update

For those in the American southeast, there's been some changes in the forecast of Hurricane Florence. It's path has shifted somewhat to the south and west. This is good news for people living in Virginia and northern North Carolina, which won't be hit quite as hard. But bad news for South Carolina which will get hit harder, and Georgia which will be more affected by the storm.

Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm. But it is still very dangerous for those directly in it's path as the winds around it's core are expected to blow up to 110 miles an hour as it approaches the North Carolina shore tonight and tomorrow morning. The storm is expected to linger in the area for a few days, with a risk of flooding deep into North and South Carolina. As the illustration shows, much of North and South Carolina, and parts of Georgia and Virginia are likely to lose electric power, and with it Internet connections.

Hurricane Florence Update

Hurricane Florence is still making it's way to the American East Coast, heading to North Carolina. As of the writing of this article, it ranks a Category 4 storm  Hurricane warnings and watches cover all of the North Carolina coast and most of the South Carolina coast, with storm warnings in Tidewater Virginia. Unfortunately, the coast is not the only area in danger as the interiors of the states in it's path and nearby face possible flooding as the storm is likely to stall and linger. The result could very well be more widespread and longer power outages.

The storm will be approaching the North Carolina coast on Thursday evening. Stay tuned for more details.

Hurricaine Threatens US East Coast

Some Second Life residents on the East Coast may be facing possible power outages later this week. In weather news, Hurricane Florence has been crossing the Atlantic, and is more and more likely to make landfall somewhere between Florida and North Carolina, with a 50/50 chance of the eye striking North or South Carolina. Virginia has also declared a "State of Emergency." Details are still early, so stay tuned for more.

Resident from Puerto Rico Back Online Two Months After Hurricane

Everyone on the Internet has had to content with power outages. For most in the United States, they seldom last more than a few hours. After a hurricane or other major storm system, power can be out for up to a week or two if there's a lot of damage. But one American territory, the island of Puerto Rico, suffered a devastating hit by Hurricane Maria in September and almost the entire power grid went down, with predictions some places would be without electricity and Internet for many months. A few days ago, one Second Life resident from the island finally came back online after two months. She had quite a story to tell.

Dear Designer,

In times of need, every penny counts. A good friend of ours, McChris Flanagan, lives in Florida and experienced major flood damage to his house as a result of Hurricane Irma which struck land in Florida on Sunday, September 10. As a result of the flooding, Chris's house currently needs new floors and walls and needs to be cleared of mold that has already started to grow. A lot of his furniture had to be thrown away and kitchen cabinets were destroyed. In addition, the fence around his yard was destroyed. Chris has a physical disability that prohibits him from being able to walk or use his hands and arms properly and is bound to a wheelchair. His mother works very hard and very long hours to make ends meet. The family is struggling to pay for the repairs to the interior of the house and we would like to help!
