Woman of the Year: Gem Sunkiller

The Newser got a few nominations for Person of the Year. Among them was someone who was part of group of major newsmakers, the Relay for Life.

For over a decade, officially joining in 2012, Gem Sunkiller has been active with the Relay. Originally the founder of Team Shadow, she would go on to be on the committee in a number of positions, as well as organizing numerous multi=team events. One Relayer would say of her, "She has been for lack of a better title Teams Lead for several years. She helps teams on board and show them how to fundraise." She's also been a host on Relay Radio, including during the Relay Weekend, "Her enthusiasm for Relay is evident during her set." For 2023, she is the Relay for Life Lead. She also describes herself as a lover of live music and has photography as a hobby.

"My hope ... beyond the prayer that we are not needed next year because a cure has been found, I hope we Relay the right way, for the right reasons.  It's our desire to help other Relayers reach their goals.  As far as goals, Relay's goal is to finish the fight."

For 2022, Gem Sunkiller is the Second Life Newser's Woman of the Year.

Stay tuned for our runner-up.

Cartoon of the Day: Too Much Firepower

Taken at the RFL Team Shadow Paintball event. This tiny in stormtrooper armor looks like his gun is a bit big to wield around without a lot of trouble. But of course stormtroopers don't exactly have the best reputation for marksmanship.

"Country For A Cure" Nets Almost 140,000 Lindens

On Saturday June 3 was "Country For a Cure," a marathon twelve hour event from 10AM to 10PM SL time. Organized by Team Shadow, four other teams would send DJs over. The DJs were: Sasha Fairywren, Aryon Dagger, Otenth Paderborn, Bella1Abbot, Ari Sparks, Catalysis Resident, Fizban Underwood, and Madonna Daehlie. The event took place in a barn in a skybox high above the sim.

Besides dancing, including line dancing, people could throw darts or try to ride a mechanical bull. But most who tried to tame the beast were thrown off in just a few seconds. There was also a bit of chaos when someone walked in with her motorbike still attached, and when she danced, people dodged to get out of the way from the wildly swinging piece of metal.

Other teams were invited to drop kiosk over if someone would hang around. Among them was the Sunbeamers, who got a few thousand Lindens from the event. Gem Sunkiller stated that the event had raised at least 138,000 for the teams involved.

Relay Track Peeks: "The Forest" and Team Shadow

Among those taking part at the Relay for Life Track this year is Gemma Cleanslate. Besides both a reporter for the Newser and a member of one of the teams, Team Shadow, for her the Relay is personal as she herself is a cancer survivor. Taking a look around the track before the Relay Walk this Weekend, she stopped by her own team's camp and one of the designer sims, Pluto Fairey's "The Forest."

Madonna's "Cancer's Worst Nightmare"

So what would you do for the Relay? There have been no shortage of things that have been done to raise money from the "Bid Me Bald," to wearing a different type of avatar for a while, to being a color you told everyone you loathed. But Madonna Daehlie's "Bid a Nightmare to End a Nightmare" took things to a whole new level. Inspired by a scene from a horror movie, the DJ noted for her rubber suit was sporting a look that no doubt will "bug" her fans.

Some Relay Events This Week

It's been a busy week for the Relay for Life, even as the Second Life Thirteenth Birthday celebrations take place. Team Shadow had their Masked Ball, Team Spirit of Sherwood Forest doubled their total at a single event, and other goings on took place. Second Life Newser was there to document these, and others.

Skunk Aid 2

Last weekend on May 12, two Relay For Life teams had a little problem, being the subject of being "skunked" by the Relay's "Stinky the Skunk" campaign. So what they do? After the success of the "Skunk Aid" fundraising party earlier in the season, they decided to hold a second one.
