Veterans Tribute Opens

The Veterans Tribute is now open in Second Life. This is the eighteenth year this annual event in honor of veterans has taken place, with memorials and music parties set up for a short time in November.

The 18th Annual SL Veteran's Tribute is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today. Visit the wall and honor a loved one or leave a tribute for the ones there!

The main feature is the Memorial Wall. Each of the bricks represents a veteran alive or deceased who served, the names contributed by residents. The Newser has written about some in the past, such as Lothi Aeon/Army Specialist Jacob D. Borton and a group of ten soldiers whose story was told by one Marine. While the majority on the Wall are American, there are other veterans honored.

There are other memorials at the Tribute, such as this one honoring the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

There's also music events every day. One can get announcements in the inworld group, or on Discord.

The Tribute is located at Stillwater Cove (41/6/29).

Various Veterans Day Events

Last week was Veterans Day in the United States, or Remembrance Day/Armistice Day as it's known in some other countries. That week, numerous locations would play events large and small in honor of those who had been soldiers, sailors, and airmen. The Newser was at a few.

A Marine's Story (2011)

Memorial Day has many stories. One would first be told one Veterans Day in 2011. At the Second Life Veterans Tribute, Laken Titanium, a US Marine in real-life, was introduced to me. He had a story to tell, not of himself, but rather of a number of his platoon whom sadly never made it home.

Announcement: March 31 Campaign

Hi everyone,

I am launching a campaign to get 31,000 Russian troops to cross the border into neighboring countries, such as Poland or Turkey. The idea is to incentive them to drop their arms and walk to safety.

The name of the project is March 31. This means that, until the date of March 31, the troops from Russia that walk over peacefully will be given a gaming console (Playstation, XBox, Nintendo Switch)  each. So, on top of normal donation, we will somehow finance 31,000 consoles ready to give out. We will harness the power of the free Internet.

Our united clubs will work with all our guests to set social media ablaze with 'MARCH31' sayings and logos and calls for MARCH31. With these consoles, we will also give them food, drinks and perhaps some beer and friendly attention.

These soldiers are mostly 16-30 and do not want to be killed for Putin. Let's help them.

Please, reach me and add me if you want to be part of his historic effort.

The 2018 Veterans Tribute

Today marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. A year later, America would celebrate it's first Veterans Day. In Second Life, one yearly reminder of the holiday is the Veterans Tribute. The Newser was there, and took a few pictures.

Announcement: 2018 SL Veteran’s Tribute

Welcome to the 12th Annual SL Veteran’s Tribute for 2018  which will be set up until  November 13th.  This is the 12th annual Veteran’s Tribute that we have put together.

The Tribute itself is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today.

The goal of the Tribute is to provide a non-political, content filled, educational, interactive SIM inside Second Life where men and women of all walks of life can visit and provide remembrance and honor to those who have served in the Armed Services.

The tribute operates on a zero dollar budget and are non-profit; the entire tribute is built, funded, organized and executed on a purely volunteer basis. We have an organized group on SL called the “SL Veteran’s Tribute” if you would like to look it up.  This group will be used as the basis of our planning and scheduling for the Tribute.

With Kindest and Best Regards,
The SL Veteran’s Tribute Group

Places to Visit on Memorial Day in Second Life

This Memorial Day in in the United States, there are a number of places on the Grid an American can visit if one wants to take a moment or two to honor those veterans who fell in service to the country.

Sadly some memorials to Veterans are no longer online. One of the best was a reproduction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which was up from 2007 to sometime in 20011 when it vanished.

Veterans Isle is the home location to a group of veterans, and friends of. Every month, they hold a fundraiser to raise funds for the "Homes For Our Troops" charity. Pictured here is their Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

Another location is the Operation Enduring Freedom Memorial, the inworld memorial to the ongoing fight against terrorism. Owned by Theremes Langdon, it is at Arena (75, 96, 45)

At the Biker Veterans Administration HQ are a few memorials, including a POW*MIA memorial.

The BVA is at Paintoy (152/224/25). The sim is rated adult, so it may be blocked to some residents.

One memorial which has been moved around a few times is the Iraqi War Memorial. Originally in Epimetheus, it was moved to Ganymede, then Galactica. The memorial's displays change every several seconds to show a new name and picture of American soldiers whom lost their lives in the conflict.

The memorial's current home is Minoa (149, 23, 110)

Memorial Day

You have been my friend for such a long time
I am going to miss you, in every way
Feelings can not express my loss
My life has changed today
All of the things we used to do
All of the things we had planned
All of the childhood dreams
Have all gone away
I am going to miss you, in every way
My life has changed today
The laughs, the tears, the beautiful smiles
The times we spent together, miles and miles

All of the things I have ever thought
All of the things I have ever forgot
Come to mind now, like a dream from the past
They race through my mind way to fast
When I think of you, when I wish of you
I remember the things we used to do
My fondest memories, my childish dreams
All bring back my love for you

What is left for me to say
What is left for me to do
You left me way too soon
A void like an empty room
I wish I could change the past
Make some things different
Make some things last
I am going to miss you in every way
Feelings do not express my loss
My life has changed today
If I could change some things
If I could change my life
I would make sure to say
I love you, I do, I do, I do

You are such a part of my life
And now you are gone
Taken away like a whisper
Taken away in a breath
Taken away for eternal life
Never to die
But forever to live
In a place of happiness
In a place of love
In a place to rest
A new place called home above

May you find peace
In all of your days
And comfort in all of your ways
I will miss you so very much so
I am going to miss you in every way
My life has changed today

Anzac Day 100th Anniversary Rememberance

Last Saturday, the 100th Anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli took place. Today the event is known as Anzac Day, a military day of rememberance in Australia and New Zealand. In Second Life, a ceremony was held in honor of those who served, the fallen and the survivors. Jessicabelle Dayafter took some notes and pictures so the event could later be written down for public record.

Cartoon of the Day

From the battle reenactment at the Paganalia in Rome last weekend. There was an anthro dragon among the ranks. But no fire breathing for him, though one wondered if his hide made him a little tougher to beat.

ADI In The Wasteland

On the lookout for combat roleplay areas, TheonlyJohnny Resident has found that got his interest. The Wasteland sim, made to look like the ruins of an occupied Washington DC, is held by the ADI combat group. The plotline is that ADI took the city from the inhabitants, and not only dares others to take it back, but is willing to sell them the guns to do it. Theonlyjohnny gives his write-up on the group and place.

Memorials to Veterans in Second Life

Memorial Day is a time for those in the United States to remember those veterans who died in service. And in a number of places on the Grid, there are memorials to the fallen. Some are fairly simple, others took a little time to make. But the message behind all is the same.

A Marine's Story

Behind the big story of the Second Life Veterans Tribute last week, there were smaller, more personal stories. Among them was that of Laken Titanium, a US Marine in real-life, whom a number of his platoon met their end in Iraq. Second Life Newser had the fortune to meet up with him, and he had a story to share.
