20th Annual Hair Fair in Second Life Offering Limited Edition Last Names, Lifetime Premium Plus, Premium Auction

With the attention on the Relay for Life, it's easy to miss another cancer-related fundraiser going on in Second Life: The Hair Fair. Taking place in six sims, it offers a large variety of hairpieces, as well as other headgear like bandanas and wraps. And for it's anniversary, this Hair Fair is offering something special: Limited Edition last names and a  Lifetime Premium Plus and Lifetime Premium auctions.

...the 20th annual Hair Fair event in Second Life. Since 2010, Hair Fair has proudly partnered with Wigs For Kids, raising crucial funds and awareness to support children experiencing medical hair loss. Each year, creators, organizers, and residents come together to make this virtual event a meaningful celebration of community and generosity.

Like every year, the Hair Fair has numerous shops offering hairpieces for sale, each with a listed percentage of sales going to the charity Wigs For Kids. Fifteen percent is the minimum amount, with 100% of the bandana sales going to the fundraiser. They are in six sims, grouped by hair color: Blonde, Brunette, Redhead, Streaks, Noirette, Fouls. Supporting a good cause isn't the only reason people come here. You can find varieties here that can be hard to find anywhere else, especially men's hair.

But there are two things that set this Hair Fair apart. One is you can purchase one of three limited edition surnames for your account (all hair related): Style, Salon, and Strand.

You can purchase at the event the last name of your choice and these will be manually set in motion with Linden Lab. They are being sold for the standard name change fee of L 12250 and 100 % goes to Wigs for Kids. You can also change your first name included in the price.

These will not only have the awesome factor of having such unique new names, but also knowing that the name has history of helping Wigs for Kids ♥. Who do their best to promote this event every year on their own website.

As a reminder, your name will not change instantly, "While the name change is not instant it is done in order of filing your ticket, so do that as soon as you purchase." To get one of these last names, head to:  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Hair%20Fair%20-%20Blonde/236/251/24

But this isn't all. You can also bid to get to upgrade to a Lifetime Premium account or a Lifetime Premium Plus account. You'll never have to pay another monthly fee for as long as Second Life is around.

Hair Fair 2026 has been given the amazing opportunity to Auction off two Lifetime accounts, where 100% of the proceeds will go to Wigs for Kids.

 - 1 Lifetime Premium Plus account.

 - 1 Lifetime Premium account.

The starting bids are based on the purchase price of these accounts set by Linden Lab. The Auction closes on 14th June but do not miss out on getting your bid in, if you are outbid before the auction ends you will be sent a notecard with landmark to return to the location to bid again if you wish to do so - which will also show as an offline notice to email if you have your settings that way. Please visit regularly during the event to keep your eye on the Auction.

The Hair Fair is going on until Sunday June 14.

EOTB: New Valentine-Themed Last Names (Limited Edition)

Besides listing some Valentine's Day events in the official Second Life blog the other day, Linden Lab also announced some Valentine's Day-themed last names.

The following valentine-themed names are only available for a limited time:
Snugglepuff
Allure
Passion
Heartstrings
Aphrodite
Adonis
Waifu
Husbando

Taking a look at this list, it's safe to say some of these names will be used more than others, especially for men. Hard to imagine a guy renaming himself "Snugglepuff."

The Lab stated these surnames "are seasonal and may come back around this time next year, for a limited time."

EOTB: No Land Setup Fees For December, Holiday-Themed Last Names

Yesterday in the official blog, Linden Lab had a couple announcements. For those interested in getting sims, the Lab has an early Christmas present. They stated that there would be no setup fees for sims purchased in December.

Premium and Premium Plus subscribers will pay no setup fees for any new regions purchased during the month of December. Only pay the first month’s maintenance fee and move right in.

Also, the Lab also announced new last names, Christmas-themed ones.

Tinseltail
Elf
Mistletoe
Gingerbread
Noelle
Claus
Blitzen

The Lab stated the names are up only "for a limited time," though may be back next year.

Comparing this months list of names to the original list in April 2020, only a few names remain:  Atheria, Huntsman, Voxel, Littlepaws, Takeda, Dallas, and the option to change to the generic "Resident."

EOTB: Mother's Day Themed Last Names

 *
For many Second Life residents yesterday, Sunday May 8, it was a day to take a break from the computer and spend some time with their mothers. Others would spend some time inworld with their adopted Second Life mothers. For the latter, a few days ago Linden Lab made available three last names appropriate for the holiday

To celebrate Mother’s Day and all the mothers in the Second Life community, we are releasing new limited edition last names today, only available until May 13th:

Mamacita
Mommy
Madre

As stated, the names are available only until Friday May 13, after which the Lab will presumably change the list of available surnames again.

New "Limited Edition" Last Names Available

For those looking for some new last names to change to, yesterday on Thursday February 3, Linden Lab announced ten new "limited edition" last names. All are Valentine's Day themed.

The names are:

Cupid
Lovely
XOXO
Desire
Enamour
Cuddles
Snookipuss
Schatzi

"Schatzi" is a German term meaning "sweetheart."

It should be interesting to see how often some of these names are adopted. There will likely be few males adopting the surname "Snookipus."

As a reminder, only Premium account holders can change their last names, and there is a $39.99 fee for doing so.

EOTB: Winter-Themed Last Names Announced

Yesterday on their official blog, Linden Lab announced a new list of last names. They stated these were limited edition, available until January 5, 2022.

The names are holiday themed to reflect this month being the Christmas season.

Snowflake
Kringle
Yule
Fruitcake
Ninnymuggins
Humbug
Hollyberry
Jinglepaw

The Lab states, "These names for winter are seasonal and may come back around this time next year, for a limited time."

Some of these names will be more popular than others. It's hard to imagine anyone with a serious manner renaming themselves "Ninnymuggins." Also, "Snowflake" in recent years in North American has come to mean thin-skinned and intolerant, and "Fruitcake" has come to mean "crazy," so their use may be limited as well.

Of the original list of 48 names from April 2020, only 18 are left: Takeda, Littlepaws, Alpha, Mysterious, Hexem, Atheria, Puddles, Rowley, Leeder, Cloud, Ravenhurst, Kiyori, Huntsman, Voxel, Dallas, Crisp, Mercury, and the option to go back to "Resident."

New Halloween-Themed Last Names Available

Yesterday on Wednesday, Linden Lab announced five new last names. They were listed as "Limited Edition" for Halloween season, and it was obvious they were for the spooky holiday.

To celebrate Halloween we are releasing new limited edition last names today!

The following Halloween-themed names are only available until November 1st:

Trick
Treat
Lecter
Pumpkins
Ghostly

The Lab would also say, "These names for Halloween are seasonal and may come back around this time next year, for a limited time."

However, to keep the list of names at forty-eight, this means five surnames were taken off the list of last ames. They are Primless, Knickers, Orlando, Aviator, and Caboose.

Most of the new names are the harmless kind of spooky. One stands out: Lecter, the surname of the psychotic and cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs." Ghosts and vampires may not be real, but serial killers unfortunately can be. Hard to say how many will come up with names like "Hannibal Lecter" and "Doctor Lecter" as a result of the new option.

For those who think the choices of last names leave something to be desired, the Lab does have a suggestion form to fill out - Click Here to do so.

The Lab stated that these choices may be back next year around the time of Father's Day, but also for a limited time.

For the Second Life Birthday, the limited edition last names were in the Fantasy theme, like the Linden Homes.

The following names are in theme with SL18B this year and are only available until July 9th.

Mystic
Fae
Mote
Woodsprite
Silvius
Fyrewik
Padfoot

The Lab would say, "We will continue to make additional updates to the available last name pool, so if these options aren’t for you, stay tuned for future updates."

Limited Edition Last Names Available For Mother's Day

Linden Lab has a few new last names available. But these are available for only a few days. Just in time for Mother's Day weekend, the Lab announced three limited edition last names available only until April 10.

To celebrate Mother’s Day and all the mothers in the Second Life community, we are releasing new limited edition last names today, only available until May 10th:
Mama
Matriarch
Mum

These names are seasonal and may come back around this time next year, for a limited time.

When the Lab has made a last name available before, in it's early days it was available for several months, then dropped and never available again. Recently, it could be available for longer sometimes, but still never available again once dropped. This would be the first time that the Lab has considered the possibility of a last name available for a second time.

On April 1, Linden Lab announced two other limited edition last names which were around for only a week. It was never stated whether or not they will be available again.

April Fools in Second Life

As it had for the previous nine years, the Second Life Newser posted a gag article. One reader felt we went slightly too far. But I also overheard plenty of compliments. One commented it was the scariest April Fool since the joke about Disney buying the virtual world a few years ago.

But as far as Second Life goes, that was just the start of the April Foolery.

Team Firestorm got in on the act. At one point in the day they gave their logo on their viewer "googly eyes."

Linden Lab also got into the act. On the Second Life Blog, they announced two "Limited Edition" last names.

In appreciation of our Anthro/Furry community in Second Life, we are releasing two new limited edition last names today, only available until April 8th:
UwU
OwO

Checking the "Change Name" page, it appears the option is a real one. Someone on the Second Life forums also stated they saw two others use it.

But this gag last name wasn't the end. On the Second Life Flickr, there was a picture of four tenement apartment buildings.

Come get a sneak peek at our new theme for Linden Homes, on the Millbank region in #SecondLife - just for today!

Checking the Millbank sim at with an alt, the apartment buildings were there. They also had a number of old Soviet Propaganda posters. finding the parking garage entrance, there were no stairs, just "The People's Great and Glorious Elevator." But stepping inside, I ended shot up to the top, falling down, and once I got back up shot up once more. Moving around, I finally managed to get into the top floor. There were a number of markers around to point out where to place objects. On top of the building was a LDPW helicopter.

So why the Soviet theme? Maybe this was a dig at the "Woodburry" griefers of years ago whom occasionally pretended to be Communists.

Run of the mill residents got in on the act as well. Yours truly overheard a singer say to her fans that Linden Lab was asking residents to wear masks, stating it was a way to encourage people in real life to do so.

So despite that things have been rough over the past year with lots of tragedy, April Fools Day is alive and well. And the Lab isn't afraid to get in on it.

Editor's Note: Just how does one pronounce "UwU" and "OwO"?
