The River Fundraiser For RFL And ACS

The River has been busy this month. For Valentines Day, they had a Bridgerton setting with Victorian houses and horse-drawn carriages. But the main event was from Saturday February 21 to Sunday February 22 with a Relay for Life event: RagnaRock Cancer. Tribute bands and live singers raised thousands of Linden dollars. Reporter Netera Landar went over and had a few words with the owner and another of the staff.

More on The Copperfield Heights Linden Homes

As reported earlier, on Thursday February 26 Linden Lab announced their latest model of Linden Homes: the Copperfield Heights homes, both in the official blog, and the forums

Copperfield Heights - Traditional Craftsman homes with spacious living areas and signature architectural design.

The newest in the line of Linden Homes has arrived. These warm craftsman styled homes feature wooden beams, custom wood elements and minimalist Craftsman interiors.

Copperfield Heights is open to all Plus, Premium and Premium Plus Residents. This collection of Craftsman style homes creates communities featuring natural elements and earth tones designed to create an authentic Arts & Crafts neighborhood in Second Life.

 * * * * *

Copperfield Heights brings traditional Craftsman design with spacious living areas and signature architectural details inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. Warm wood tones, exposed beams, natural stone elements, and multi-paned windows create a neighborhood that feels timeless and welcoming.

Open to Plus, Premium, and Premium Plus members, this collection expands the Linden Homes lineup with a focus on craftsmanship and comfort.

Dropping in myself for a look, the place looked like a nice suburb in the middle of winter. As it turns out the neighborhood is designed to change with the seasons, with greenery appearing in the spring, and in the fall the leaves turn brown and red. I would read, "Like Aspen Ridge, Copperfield Heights regions transform automatically throughout the year. ... There is nothing to manage. The seasons shift on their own."

But what sets this neighborhood apart from previous Linden Home areas is it's not just Premium homes, not just Premium Plus homes, but both! Among the 512 and 1024 square-meter lots one would expect to find in a Premium Linden Home area are some 2048 sm lots that were previously only in their own spacious neighborhoods.

And in terms of variety of house design, this is the most diverse Linden Home area to date with a total of twelve models. There are four homes with 512 square meter lots, Glenwood, Laurel, Maple Grove, and Prairie. There are four with 1024 sm lots, Cedarwood, Meadowbrook, Millbrook, and Sunnydale. And there are four with 2024 sm lots, Maplecrest, Oakridge, Pinecrest, and Woodland.

If you want to jump right in to look around, this spot is as good as any: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Winesap%20Ridge/128/128/25

Update: The Copperfield Heights area has been expanded to 27 sims, including Copperfield Crossing which connects it to Bellissera. The shore has a boat rezzing area, near All Hours (169,150,23),  so you can sail across. The sims I saw at the edge looked green, so this being March, the change of seasons may have already happened.

There may be further expansions, so those who are interested in a home here, keep an eye here for more sims later.

Discord Backs Down: Age Verification Delayed

Earlier this month, Discord announced that it's users would need to submit to age verification. Either they would need to show some ID proving their age, or they would need to show a picture or short video of themselves. The result was numerous users complaining. Part of the backlash were concerns about the safety of data collected as in October hackers had stolen the information of 700,000 government IDs owned by the platform via a third party service it was working with at the time. There were further concerns when other hackers discovered "the frontend code for their partner Persona was publicly accessible on the open internet," and the code "compares your selfie to watchlist photos using facial recognition, screens you against 14 categories of adverse media (from mentions of terrorism to espionage), and tags reports with codenames from active intelligence programs consisting of public-private partnerships."

So on Tuesday February 24, Discord announced a change of plans. They were delaying age-verification checks. Discord's co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy would explain:

In hindsight, we should have provided more detail about our intentions and how the process works. The way this landed, many of you walked away thinking we're requiring face scans and ID uploads from everyone just to use Discord. That's not what's happening, but the fact that so many people believe it tells us we failed at our most basic job: clearly explaining what we're doing and why. That's on us.

Our goal is straightforward: keep the Discord experience completely unchanged for the vast majority of people while ensuring an age-appropriate experience for everyone. Over 90% of users will never need to verify their age to continue using Discord exactly as they do today. This is powered in part by our internal safety systems, which can already make an age determination for many adult users without any user action. We'll publish the methodology behind this in a technical blog post before we launch globally.

Vishnevskiy would go on to say the age-verification was "being shaped by legislation already in effect in the UK and Australia, with Brazil quick to follow, and Europe and multiple US states close behind." They were also no longer in a partnership with Persona, the platform they were working with when the hacking breach happened.

So Discord users can relax a little, though perhaps not for very long. An article by "The Verge" stated, "Age verification is a reality on a growing number of social media platforms, requiring an ID or facial scan for full access to everything from YouTube to Roblox. The age-gating wave is coming along with calls for stronger child safety measures online, despite concerns about privacy, security, and censorship. In the US, lawmakers are pushing forward bills like the App Store Accountability Act and Parents Over Platforms Act to have app stores themselves verify users’ ages." So users of platforms valuing privacy will likely be needing to be very watchful for a while

New Sims Off Bellisseria Coast

Listening in on Bellisseria chat the other day, it was pointed out there were some new sims on the map. Checking it out, there was a new group of eighteen off it's west coast, next to the "dragon in a boot eating a pickle." They're separated from the rest by a one sim wide gap, and cannot be seen from outside, other than the map, or tped to.

Hard to say what theme these sims will be. While "Smeagol Brook" sounds like something out of "Lord of The Rings," "Trampoline Man" certainly doesn't.

I heard that the sims first appeared on Monday, and at first there were just a few, then more appeared. So by the time this is posted and read, there may be more.

Stay tune for further developments,

Update: The sims on the map have changed color, looking wintry, though are still off-limits.

Raglan Shire Pre-Valentine’s Day Party

RFL Team Sugar Skols Hit Two Million Raised

On Tuesday February 24, the RFL team Sugar Skuls passed the two million Linden dollar mark in fundraising. They had passed one million over a week ago following their "Battle of The DJs."

As of the writing of this article, they are over ,034,000 Lindens and at Diamond Rank fundraising. The Sunbeamers are second with almost 777,000 raised and at Sapphire rank. Third is Team Harmony of Hope with over 573,000 raised.

New SSP Sims on Map

There's some new sims in development by Linden Lab. On the map, far north of the mainlands and Belissaria, One can see a number of light blue squares with the front part of the name being "SSP" followed by a number. There is also a group of ten whitish sims, looking like winter landscapes from above, named "QT 1" to "QT 10."

"SSP" has been a common temporary name for sims in development. It's short for "Super Secret Project" according to the Lindens and Moles.

As of now, there's no official word on what these sims are for. But no doubt people will have fun speculating just what their purpose will be.

Time will tell.

A little over a week ago, Netera Landar dropped by a place called The Willows, which was having a Valentines Day "pre-show." Abba Tribute By Merryjest

On Friday February 20, Merryjest Starchild had a tribute performance in honor of the 70s band Abba.

Billed as the "Abba Super Trooper," it was at 5PM SL time, Merryjest singing various songs done by the band. Sometimes the stage would change shape between music tunes. And there was also some trivia about the musicians offered. There would also be a themed costume contest.

It was a unique event delivered as only Merryjest could.

RFL: Team Sunbeamers' "Bid Me Purple" And "Bid Me Pink"

The Relay for Life's Team Sunbeamers has launched it's first "Bid Me" events this year. Inspired by the "Bid Me Bald" fundraisers by the Relay Rockers team, over the years the mostly-furry Sunbeamers team has done all kinds from "Bid Me Human" to "Bid Me Pantsless" to "Bid me Skunk." And to help start things off for the 2026 fundraising season, "The little team that could" has launched "Bid Me Purple" and "Bid Me Pink." As with most other Sunbeamer Bid Mes, these are taking place at Club Cutlass.

For "Bid Me Purple," the vict - er, volunteer is Liska da'Lantros (LiskaDaLantros Resident). It involves two kiosks. For every 2500 Lindens, rounded down, donated to the right kiosk, Liska's normally reddish coat of fur will be purple. Meaning a total of 4999 Linden dollars donated by closing time would result in one week of her new color while 5000 Linden dollars will be two weeks of jokes of falling into a wine press. For those wanting to keep Liska her normal shade, they can donate to the kiosk on the left. If it's higher at closing time, then the red vixen stays red.

With "Bid Me Pink," donators are in for a treat as team captain Rita Mariner herself has volunteered to put her fur on the line. Her fundraiser runs much like Liska's, except that hers is for every 3000 Linden dollars a week raised is a week she spends as a pink Kani (pre-mesh) bunny.

And just what does Rita think of the idea of going pink? Well there was what she was saying for the March 29 2019 Bid Me ...

I go pink for a week, due to the evil, nasty, vicious Bixyl ...

*chuckles* Glad to donate to the cause, Rita.

When I last checked the kiosk, a total of 7100L had been raised for Liska's Bid Me, with 5000L for Rita's.

The kiosks will remain up in the room behind the dance floor area at Club Cutlass until Saturday March 14, probably at the end of the party at 8PM.

Running Into Past Coworkers

It was an interesting evening as I ran into a couple certain ladies. One was Charlotte Williams, whom had written for the Newser a little over a decade ago, noted for some sports articles. She had taken a break from Second Life, but had come back.

The other was an alt of Mystique Sassoon (no picture available), whom was under JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer's Second Life Newspaper when I joined in 2007. She happened to recognize my name. She had taken a break of her own, and was sad to hear Dana and James were no longer inworld, but happy some of the team had continued to report the news.

Always good to run into old friends.

In Gaming: Rise of Cultures Marks Five Years

Just a note, one of the games I play, Rise of Cultures, marked it's fifth anniversary. It did so with an inworld event, and on it's Discord. Since doing the review two years ago, I continued to play, though took breaks when I was extra busy. By now, I've gotten to the Feudal Age, or about 1000 AD. Of this level, your allies are Vikings. So some of the resources you need to progress can be acquired only from their pillaging, "We didn't steal it, it was just there and we took it."

Rise of Cultures can be played on both compatible webbrowsers and some smartphones. Making "RoC" jokes, "I'm a RoC star," "Upon this RoC I stand," are optional.

Alex Radikal of Tiny Bit Radikal

With Second Life having plenty of people in human and furry avatars, it's easy for other types to get overlooked. There are merfolk, there are taurs, and then there's the smaller avatars, the tinies. But if you get a tiny avatar, where are you going to get the clothes for it? Newser reporter Netera Landar had a few words with Alex Radikal, who creates and sells outfits for the small avies. She was able to explain what went into making them, and more.

In Brief ...

There's a lot going on, and only a little time to write. So, some things that would otherwise have been reported on earlier will have to wait for a larger article. For now ...

There's been a lot of talk about Discord Age Verification, and more than a little suspicion. That Discord lost data some months ago in a hack has not helped with peoples' confidence, and a number are talking about jumping ship and heading to another platform.

The Premier Business Center has a Black History Museum. There was a grand opening party on Sunday February 8. The museum honors a number of Black Americans from musicians, civil rights activists, politicians, scientists, inventors, and others.

And of course the mystery of the three strange boulders.

These and other stories when we have time to write.

Relay For Life Fundraising Levels

For those who wonder what the various team levels mean, there was a chart in the Relay for Life Volunteers group showing them.

For those that raise 12,500 Linden dollars, or about $50 USD, they have reached Bronze Level fundraising. This is what the plurality of teams reach.

For teams that raise 50,000 Linden dollars, or about $200 USD, Silver Level fundraising.

Teams that raise 125,000 Linden dollars, or about $500 USD,  get Gold Level rank.

Teams that raise 250,000 Linden dollars, or about $1000, about the price of a new computer, get  Platinum Level fundraising.

For the teams that have raised 500,000 Linden dollars, or about $2000 USD, they've reached Jade Level.

The teams that get to 750,000 Lindens raised, about $3000 USD, they're at Sapphire rank.

Teams that reach one million Lindens raised, about $4000 USD, are at Emerald Level. Those teams that reach this level have put in some work.

The teams that reach 1,250,000 Lindens raised, about $5000 USD, are at Ruby Level fundraising.

Teams that raise a million and a half Lindens, about $6000 USD, are at Topaz Level fundraising.

Those teams that raise 1,750,000 Linden dollars, about $7000 USD, are at Diamond Level.

Teams that raise 2,500,000 Linden dollars, about $10,000 USD, are at Crimson rank.

Those teams that raise 3,750,000 Linden dollars, about $15,000 USD, are at Purple Level fundraising.

Teams that raise five million Linden dollars, about $20,000 USD, are at All Star Level fundraising.

The teams that raise 6,750,000 Linden dollars, about $25,000 USD, are at Super Star rank.

Teams that raise 7,500,000 Linden dollars, about $30,000 USD, are at Supernova Level fundraising.

The teams that raise ten million Linden dollars, about $40,000 USD, are at Hypernova Level fundriasing.

Finally, the teams that raise 12,500,000 Linden dollars, about $50,000 USD, have reached the top rank for this year - Intergalactic Level fundraising.

The ranks have changed somewhat over the years. For a time, they would get a little higher each year, until there was a reset. And sometimes the names are different. One year, "All Star" was the first fundraising level, before Bronze.

How high will the various teams get this year?

The Sunbeamer Moon Dance For RFL

A few days ago on Thursday February 12, The Relay For Life in Second Life's Sunbeamers team held the first of it's weekly Moon Dances. The party started at 6PM, and went on for two hours.

Team Sunbeamers have dusted off things on the moon cleaned and charged the luanch cannons for another relay season to benefit the American Cancer Society! We are pleased to announce that flights to Sunbeamer Base on the moon resume Feb. 12, 2026.

At the SURL on the press release, there was a steampunkish "Moon Cannon" that shot you up in the air. Once on the surface, you could click on a singles dance ball to dance away, or you and a friend could use the couples dance ball. The music was provided by DJ Cynthia, who instead of performing for tips asked that people donate to one of the Relay kiosks.

The party went well, with the usual jokes and puns the Sunbeamers are noted for. The running punch line about the event has been "great music, no atmosphere." Among the songs played was the "Sunbeamers Anthem" by EmpressLuna Starchild.

People from a total of 11 teams would show up. This included several from "Roos With A Dream." Ren Flow would introduce three new faces, "Roos With A Dream are pleased to announce three new members: Fenella Baily, Liandra Aries, and Liza Blackwood. If you've been around SL for a while you may recognize them under the title 'Charlie's Angels'. They are well known for their wide range of outfits that they love to change into while dancing."

During the event, Cynthia would announce the date of the annual Sunbeamer Air Show, "Just got the word from Wade" It was set for Saturday March 14.

At the end of the party, Cynthia would play the "I Run For Life" song, as the fireworks went up into the air.

I run for hope
I run to feelI run for the truth, for all that is realI run for your mother, your sister, your wifeI run for you and me my friendI run for life

After the party, Sunbeamer team captain Rita Mariner would announce the 11 teams had raised a total of 21,000 Linden dollars.

The Moon Dance will take place again tomorrow Thursday February 19, and every Thursday until Thursday June 11, always at 6PM SL time.

Mardi Gras Parade And Party In Bratsville

Today is Mardi Gras, also known as "Fat Tuesday" or "Carnival." There will be a few places holding themed events. But one place you won't want to miss is the Mardi Gras Parade in the Bratsville sim.

The Mardi Gras Parade is open in 2026. It will run from ... Friday Feb 13 thru Sunday Feb 22 in  a full 256x256 sim & contains 100 floats, most of which are ridable by those of us in Second Life for pics & videos of us & our friends, or the new ones we meet while riding them together. There will be DJs & Live singers, as well as a continous Blues music stream for us.

Dropping by, there were plenty of floats, balloons, bands, and more going down the street. Many were playing their own music, such as the Wonder Woman float which played the tune from the 70s TV show. Some floats, and a couple balloons, also had poseballs one could hop on and dance. To avoid feeling alone, there are a number of still figures on the street, watching the parade with you.

But the parade isn't the only attraction at the sim. At the west end of the street is a party area with a dance floor and stage. I dropped by to see a couple performers entertaining an audience with dance and song. This included Bayou Diesel, who heads the "Fans of the Mardi Gras Parade" group.

Bayou reminded me the parade was created by FrannyDJ Dean, who ran it until she passed away in 2023. But a band of fans has kept the parade alive. And this year. one can do more than watch the parade. For today, Mardi Gras, there will be four parties, with DJs, from 11 AM to 9 PM (two hour break).

11 AM to 1 PM: DJ Jaap, 3PM to 5PM : DJ Elise Boop, 5PM to 7PM : DJ Ali Heron. 7 to 9PM : DJ Bard Wasp

Happy Fat Tuesday,
