Press Release: Bay City's 18th Anniversary Celebration.

BAY CITY CELEBRATES EIGHTEEN YEARS

This Classic City Area was the First “Mole” Project

BAY CITY, SL (30 April, 2026) - The Second Life® mainland community of Bay City reaches the eighteenth anniversary or its initial release this May, and Bay City Residents are once again hosting their traditional parade down the city’s Route 66, followed by a live music event in their fairgrounds.

The first project of the Linden Department of Public Works, Bay City opened in May of 2008 to initial viewing. In 2011, its land mass doubled, as it absorbed the copy of Bay City that existed on the former Teen Grid. It has developed into the largest community-focused virtual urban area in Second Life.

Parade participants are asked to gather at noon SLT/PDT on Sunday, the 17th of May, to lineup at the band shell in Bay City - Harwich. The parade will wend its way down Route 66 beginning at 12:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, and will conclude at the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel region.

A music event will kick off at 12:30 p.m. SLT/PDT at the Fairgrounds with DJ DJ GoSpeed of KONA Stream providing music leading into the event until 1:30 p.m.SLT/PDT , followed by AleyKat (Aleylia Resident)from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, Jesie Janick from 2:30-3:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, and Raspberry Rearwin from 3:30-4:30 p.m. SLT/PDT.

All Residents of the Second Life grid are encouraged to participate. Celebration goods, including parade float bases and ideas, are available at the Bay City Community Center, in the Daley Bay region for those who wish to be a part of the event. Ample viewing areas are provided for all. The music event is also open to all who desire to attend -- not only Residents of Bay City, but the entire grid is welcome.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life® and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest Bay city group, and home to most Residents of Bay City.

Mardi Gras at Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez

Besides Valentine's Day, another holiday is just around the corner: Mardi Gras. For those who can't wait until Fat Tuesday, Gemma Cleanslate found out about one place one can have a little Carnival fun, at Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez in Colussus, by FrannyDJ. Here one can watch the parade of floats go by, or hop on one and join in. You can also pick up a few freebies at the store, and take a ride in an amusement park.

Come all to the Caledon Mardi Gras!!!

We'll start at 5pm slt on February 22nd, setting off from the parade staging area near the western coastline of Kittywickshire (look for the Des balloons and festive pennants!). We'll then head east through northern Caledon until we reach the eastern side of Pensans, then south to the Guv'nah's Mansion in Victoria City, then west to Caledon Prime and north into Port Caledon.

starting point--http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Kittiwickshire/54/120/23

Want to show off your best carnivale gear? Go for it!
Have themed pressies to give out along the route? Yay!
Can't wait to put together a float for you and your friends to ride? Awesome!
(But for floats, keep in mind that some of the sims are homesteads and there will be tunnels to go through along the route--try to keep the LI under 31 unless the floats are worn.)
Have none of the above but want to march and have a great time? Come on down!

Giant Des and Kami balloons will be available the day of the parade!

Once again, we will be featuring the ANYTHING THAT FLOATS…BUT IS NOT A BOAT contest and water race!  Hope you all are excited!!

Get your thinking caps on and create something fantastical…that is NOT A BOAT, but it does float!  The purpose of this event is to showcase your ability to design and build a water craft/vessel to travel in the water.  You must also be able to ride your floating invention.

Please let Duchess Liz Wilner or Oriella Charik know if you wish to enter.  All entries must be received and approved by no later than 11am SLT, August 18th for announcing at the Regatta. Prizes will be awarded for the ‘Most Unique’ and the ‘Fastest Vessel’.

This is a timed race. Depending on the number of participants, crews and their crafts will be lined up at the start/finish line, proceed down the canal to a designated turning point, go around a marker buoy, and proceed up canal back to start/finish line. There will be an official at the turn around the buoy to verify all contestants properly negotiate the turn around.

Rules: You may NOT utilize a commercially designed or distributed watercraft. Powerboats, canoes, kayaks, rafts, skiffs or other commercially designed craft will NOT qualify. Your vessel must NOT be commercially designed or built to travel on water. You cannot disguise an actual boat or ship for your craft. The vessels must be powered by Avi or wind energy; no swimmers pulling, pushing or propelling your craft.  NO engines, motors, trolling motors will be accepted. Sails, paddles and oars are acceptable. The decision of the judges is final. You must pick up the pieces if the vessel disintegrates in water or on land.

Hint: last year, for instance, we had a cupcake that floated and steered!

Parades and Party in New Toulouse on Saturday, Parade Today

On Saturday, the New Toulhouse sim, the location of a 1920's New Orleans roleplay community, held their "Samedi Gras" Parade at Noon on Saturday February 6. Following it was a party at the town square. Pazzo Pestana sent a video to the newser of various floats, and partiers, going down the streets, while others watched and/or danced from the streets. The event has been taking place every year in the sim for a few years.

In a proclamation, listed in the New Toulouse blog, Maggie Hawksby the "Queen of the Carnival" proclaimed, "…that the Joyous Music of Carnival shall fill the Streets of our Beloved New Toulouse, Multiplying all Merriment;…that Colorful Costumes, Elaborate Masks, and Outrageous Adornments of all kinds be the order of the day;…that Dancing in the Streets, on Sidewalks, Balconies, yea, even upon the Rooftops, shall be greatly Encouraged;…that Fair Weather and Blue Skies shall prevail, that the Multitudes might gather and celebrate without hindrance;…that the Royal Constabulary of New Toulouse shall marshal the Grand Celebration with their Customary Skill and an appropriate Degree of Forbearance toward the Inevitable Hijinks and Tomfoolery;…that the Keepers of Bars, Inns, Taverns, Grocers, Cigar Emporiums, Stables, Chinese Laundries, Bakeries, Seafood Merchants, Barber Shops, Bookshops, Print Shops, Gambling Halls, Dance Halls, Hospitals, Brothels, and Eating and Drinking Establishments in Her beloved City shall throw open their Doors to receive all Carnival Celebrants, of whatsoever degree or kind with our customary Good Fellowship, Warmth, and true Southern hospitality."

Following the parade was a party, which the Newser was able to drop in on. Again, there was a variety of outfits there from regular street clothes to fancy Carnival-style outfits to 18th century wear, and one woman was wearing nothing at all.

Henri Godenot, the mayor of the town, stated this wouldn't be the last event for Mardi Gras. Today would be the "Blessing of the Waters at 5:50PM" SL time at the New Toulouse Bayou  at (78/56/21), followed by another parade.

More pictures can be seen from the community blog, and it's Flickr page.
