 Taken at Club Balance. When one steps on things in SL, your avatar's height usually adjusts, but not always, resulting in feet that look like they're sunken in holes or soft ground. But with this guy having a lady friend on his shoulders, it looked less like a glitch and more like his feet really sunk in.

Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial

 

It was eighty-four years ago today when the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet at the Navy base Pearl Harbor at Oahu Hawaii. For the Americans, the results were devastating, over 2400 killed, both soldiers and sailors as well as several dozen civilians, and numerous ships sunk or damaged, including four battleships that were sent to the bottom. Half the deaths came from the sinking of the USS Arizona, which took a direct hit where it's ammunition magazines were, resulting in a massive explosion. While other ships were recovered, the Arizona was too severely damaged, and left as a memorial to it's crew. An official memorial was completed in May 1962, over the wreck of the ship. 

 

Second Life has it's own USS Arizona Memorial, appropriately at Oahu Island. It's for people to drop by and pay respects, and maybe learn something about the ship. 

 

The memorial has historical pictures of the ship and of the event. At the back is a listing of the names of those whom were killed.

 

For those who have been here before, there have been a few changes, notably a small theater that will be showing a small film tomorrow about the Imperial Japanese attack.

Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial

 

 

It was on this day 83 years ago that the United States was suddenly thrust into the Second World War when the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked it's Navy base at Pearl Harbor. Over 350 aircraft dropped bombs and torpedoes on the US Pacific fleet, resulting in the loss of four battleships and over 2400 dead. About half of those killed were on the USS Arizona, which sunk after an armor-piercing bomb caused a catastrophic explosion in an ammunition magazine. The other three battleships would eventually be recovered, but the Arizona was too badly damaged and left as a memorial for it's crew. In 1962, an official memorial would be built over the wreckage. 

Second Life has it's own USS Airzona Memorial. It is located in the southeast corner of the Oahu sim. A reader reads out every one of the names of the fallen every few moments. By clicking on a sign, one can toss a lei into the sea in their memory. Beneath the memorial is a virtual wreckage.

This year, there will be a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial in honor of the dead. It starts at 11 AM SL time.

About half the casualties came from the USS Arizona, which was sunk along with almost 1200 sailors whom were killed. The other battleships were eventually brought back into service, but the catastrophically damaged Arizona was left on the bottom as a memorial to its crew. About two decades later, an official public memorial was built over the ship.

 

Second Life has it's own USS Arizona Memorial, in the Oahu sim. Most of the island is a happy tropical residential place, but one corner was set aside for a replica of the memorial to the sailors whom met their end at America's entry into WW2. A lei thrower allows visitors to toss in rings of flowers for the fallen. 

 

Under the memorial is an image of the sunken battleship, complete with an occasional bubble of oil that makes its way to the surface from the wreck (for some reason, panning around it isn't visible at all angles). inside the memorial are pictures of the real structure, plus of the USS Arizona. At the end is a plaque to those who gave their lives in defense of the United States that day.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is at Oahu (190/27/24). A tribute to the event that catapulted America from isolationism to a true global power.

Over 2400 Americans were killed in the assault. About half were from the USS Arizona, which suffered a catastrophic explosion when an armor-piercing bomb detonated a magazine, killing 1200 of the 1500 crew. It and three other battleships were sunk, the other four battleships and nine other ships damaged. The other three battleships would be raised. But the Arizona was left as a memorial to it's crew. In 1962, the official USS Arizona Memorial would be built above the ship.

In Second Life, there's a virtual USS Arizona Memorial, located in the Oahu sim. Inside are photographs and other pictures of the ship, and the names of the fallen are read one by one, in addition to people being able to toss leis into the water. The location was the site of events in the past, such as the 70th Anniversary commemoration.  It's unknown if any are planned today. But the memorial is open for people to stop by and reflect.

At 7:48 Hawaii time, the US Military base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii found itself under attack by over 350 planes from an Imperial Japanese carrier force. Four battleships were sunk, numerous other ships damaged, almost 200 aircraft destroyed (on the ground) and over 2300 American servicemen had been killed. More than half of those whom met their end that day had been stationed on the USS Arizona, from it's forward ammunition magazine exploding from an armor-piercing bomb. The other three battleships would be raised and brought back into action. But the Arizona was left as a memorial to it's crew. In 1962, a memorial was built over the ship.

In Second Life at Oahu island, there is a replica of the USS Arizona Memorial. On board, one can sign a guest book, see pictures of the Arizona, and at the back see a list of those who perished on the battleship. Under the memorial, one can see the sunken ship.

It was 77 years ago on December 7, 1941 in which the Second World War came to the United States. The Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Over 2400 were killed in the attack, including almost 1200 of the 1500 sailors on the USS Arizona, when the battleship suffered a catastrophic explosion. Most of the ships severely damaged or sunk were repaired and returned to service. But the Arizona was too badly damaged to raise. It would be left in the water, the resting place for most of those who died on the ship. In 1962, a memorial was build over the battleship, the USS Arizona Memorial.

In Second Life, a replica of the USS Arizona Memorial stands at the Oahu sim. The memorial has existed for several years, and had a 70th anniversary commemoration in 2011.The memorial was offline for several months in 2016 when the sim closed. But in January 2017, the sim and memorial came back online. Last year at this time, the memorial was inaccessible due to the sim being "under construction."

Going to the USS Arizona Memorial at the Oahu sim turned out to be a no-go yesterday as the sim was closed to the public. The reason, it was "Under Construction." Having an alt join the group, the place should be reopened on December 9 to a "Grand Opening" party.

As it turns out, Oahu has a couple neighbors now, and the memorial can be seen from the
Pacific West sim by turning the draw distance way up, panning around, and waiting for the image to clear up. But stepping onto the Oahu sim will result in a warning to get off or be teleported away.

Beginning on December 9 presumably, the memorial can be found at Oahu (176/22/23). The reproduction of the real-life memorial to those who lost their lives on the USS Arizona on the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Empire. About half of the over 2300 killed in the attack perished on the ship. The memorial was online for several years, including for a Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary memorial event in 2011. The sim would be down for several months last year until it was reopened in January this year.
