Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial

 

It was eighty-four years ago today when the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet at the Navy base Pearl Harbor at Oahu Hawaii. For the Americans, the results were devastating, over 2400 killed, both soldiers and sailors as well as several dozen civilians, and numerous ships sunk or damaged, including four battleships that were sent to the bottom. Half the deaths came from the sinking of the USS Arizona, which took a direct hit where it's ammunition magazines were, resulting in a massive explosion. While other ships were recovered, the Arizona was too severely damaged, and left as a memorial to it's crew. An official memorial was completed in May 1962, over the wreck of the ship. 

 

Second Life has it's own USS Arizona Memorial, appropriately at Oahu Island. It's for people to drop by and pay respects, and maybe learn something about the ship. 

 

The memorial has historical pictures of the ship and of the event. At the back is a listing of the names of those whom were killed.

 

For those who have been here before, there have been a few changes, notably a small theater that will be showing a small film tomorrow about the Imperial Japanese attack.

Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial

 

 

It was on this day 83 years ago that the United States was suddenly thrust into the Second World War when the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked it's Navy base at Pearl Harbor. Over 350 aircraft dropped bombs and torpedoes on the US Pacific fleet, resulting in the loss of four battleships and over 2400 dead. About half of those killed were on the USS Arizona, which sunk after an armor-piercing bomb caused a catastrophic explosion in an ammunition magazine. The other three battleships would eventually be recovered, but the Arizona was too badly damaged and left as a memorial for it's crew. In 1962, an official memorial would be built over the wreckage. 

Second Life has it's own USS Airzona Memorial. It is located in the southeast corner of the Oahu sim. A reader reads out every one of the names of the fallen every few moments. By clicking on a sign, one can toss a lei into the sea in their memory. Beneath the memorial is a virtual wreckage.

This year, there will be a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial in honor of the dead. It starts at 11 AM SL time.

A number of ships were sunk or damaged, including three battleships that were sent to the bottom, and over 2400 American servicemen lost their lives. About half the casualties came from the USS Arizona, which was sunk along with almost 1200 sailors whom were killed. The other battleships were eventually brought back into service, but the catastrophically damaged Arizona was left on the bottom as a memorial to its crew. About two decades later, an official public memorial was built over the ship.

 

Second Life has it's own USS Arizona Memorial, in the Oahu sim. Most of the island is a happy tropical residential place, but one corner was set aside for a replica of the memorial to the sailors whom met their end at America's entry into WW2. A lei thrower allows visitors to toss in rings of flowers for the fallen. 

 

Under the memorial is an image of the sunken battleship, complete with an occasional bubble of oil that makes its way to the surface from the wreck (for some reason, panning around it isn't visible at all angles). inside the memorial are pictures of the real structure, plus of the USS Arizona. At the end is a plaque to those who gave their lives in defense of the United States that day.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is at Oahu (190/27/24). A tribute to the event that catapulted America from isolationism to a true global power.

In 1962, an official memorial would be built over the remains of the ship. 

In Second Life, there have been temporary USS Arizona Memorials set up, such as the one at the Veterans Tribute every November. But the permanent one is at the Oahu sim. Ten years ago for the 70th Anniversary, there was an event to honor the American servicemen who perished. No events are known to be planned today. But people are free to come by and reflect, and perhaps throw a lei in the sea with the press of the sign. A counter continually reads the names of the sailors who fell that day.

Inside are photographs and other pictures of the ship, and the names of the fallen are read one by one, in addition to people being able to toss leis into the water. It was 77 years ago on December 7, 1941 in which the Second World War came to the United States. The Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Over 2400 were killed in the attack, including almost 1200 of the 1500 sailors on the USS Arizona, when the battleship suffered a catastrophic explosion. Most of the ships severely damaged or sunk were repaired and returned to service. But the Arizona was too badly damaged to raise. It would be left in the water, the resting place for most of those who died on the ship. In 1962, a memorial was build over the battleship, the USS Arizona Memorial.

In Second Life, a replica of the USS Arizona Memorial stands at the Oahu sim. The memorial has existed for several years, and had a 70th anniversary commemoration in 2011.The memorial was offline for several months in 2016 when the sim closed. But in January 2017, the sim and memorial came back online. Last year at this time, the memorial was inaccessible due to the sim being "under construction."

Going to the USS Arizona Memorial at the Oahu sim turned out to be a no-go yesterday as the sim was closed to the public. The reason, it was "Under Construction." Having an alt join the group, the place should be reopened on December 9 to a "Grand Opening" party.

As it turns out, Oahu has a couple neighbors now, and the memorial can be seen from the
Pacific West sim by turning the draw distance way up, panning around, and waiting for the image to clear up. But stepping onto the Oahu sim will result in a warning to get off or be teleported away.

Beginning on December 9 presumably, the memorial can be found at Oahu (176/22/23). The reproduction of the real-life memorial to those who lost their lives on the USS Arizona on the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Empire. About half of the over 2300 killed in the attack perished on the ship. The memorial was online for several years, including for a Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary memorial event in 2011. The sim would be down for several months last year until it was reopened in January this year.

Welcome Back Oahu

 On Saturday January 7, The Oahu sim had their official grand-reopening party, the "Oahu Ohana." The party got started at 12 PM with some music, and at 1PM had a "Maori, hula, and fire" dance.

Twstd Ruggles (the lady in the grass skirt to the left) is the owner of Oahu. The sim had been up for several years, but closed sometime in early 2016 due to her real life financial situation. She informed the Newser on January 3 the sim was back and online, with the official celebration on Saturday.

On the other side of the island from the celebration stood the island's most noted feature, the USS Arizona memorial at (176/22/23), a tribute to those killed in the Imperial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. People drop by the memorial, notably on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and the Pearl Harbor anniversary on December 7. But the island also has much to offer people who just want to kick back and relax on the beach, watching the surf roll by.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Back Online

Sometime between December 2015 and Memorial Day in May 2016, the Oahu sim disappeared from the grid, taking away it's most unique build, Second Life's USS Arizona Memorial with it. But good news, the Newser was recently informed by the sim owner Twstd Ruggles that the island was back, and with it the memorial, which one can visit again at Oahu (176/22/23).

On Saturday January 7, there will be an official reopening party, starting at 12 Noon SL time, with a hula and fire dance show at 1PM. The event will be at Oahu (97, 220, 22).

The memorial had previously been up for several years, and hosted a Peark Harbor 70th anniversary event on December 7 2011. It's return is welcome news for history and military fans.

For several years, Second Life had a replica of the USS Arizona Memorial, which stands over the wreck of the USS Arizona, which exploded and sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, taking with it nearly 1200 lives, about half of those killed in the battle. Located in the Oahu sim, there would be a few events there on anniversaries at the virtual memorial, such as the one on the 70th anniversary of the attack. While the memorial was up last year, sometime between last December and Memorial Day 2016, the sim went offline, taking the memorial with it.

With two sims recently brought back from the virtual nether, how likely is it the memorial will be back? In my opinion, iffy as unlike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Oahu wasn't a memorial sim, but a residential sim with a memorial. It is possible Linden Lab might contact the owner and find a place for the memorial without having to bring back a whole sim. But then again, Mont Saint Michael was looking like it was lost for good a few months ago.

Time will tell.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Offline

This Memorial Day, while there are a number of places to visit to reflect on those whom died in service to the American military, the USS Arizona Memorial is not among them. The Oahu sim where it was located was offline, and while it's still listed in Search, recent traffic registers as zero. The sim has been taken offline. Unless the sim owner can bring the place back online, it seems the memorial to the famous battleship sunk at Pearl Harbor joins the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which went offline sometime in 2011, among those noted places in Second Life now visible only through past records.

The USS Arizona Memorial, a replica of the real-life memorial in Honolulu Hawaii, has been in Second Life for several years. On December 7, 2011, there was a memorial service to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Japanese Empire's attack, which resulted in America's entry into the Second World War. Yesterday, Dec 7th, was the anniversary of the Imperial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. And for many, a time to pay a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial in the Oahu sim. Last year was the 70th anniversary, and there was a special ceremony then. This year, there was no event for the first time at the sim in four years, though the sim's theater had a showing of the film "Pearl Harbor."

And residents had a chance to honor the fallen by tossing a lei in the sea.

In Honolulu Hawaii on Dec 7th in real life, there was a memorial service to those who fell in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Second Life, there was also a tribute, at the Oahu sim at the USS Arizona Memorial, with a number of residents gathering to pay their respects.
