EOTB: "SL Video Creators Group’s Best of 2025 Nominees"

 

 In the Linden Blog, there's been two updates in the past few days. On Wednesday January 14 was an announcement for video fans. For the rest of January, there will be special showings of highlights from videos nominated for The SL Video Creators Group Best of 2025 Award at the Cinema at the WelcomeHub area. This will be followed by an awards show at the Cinema on February 7.

 

Calling all machinima fans! The SL Video Creators Group is kicking off the new year at the Second Life Cinema with a special showcase celebrating the Best of 2025 Award nominees.

Founded by Jordan Rizzo in 2020, the SL Video Creators Group brings together Second Life filmmakers to share resources, collaborate, and highlight outstanding machinima. Each year, their awards recognize exceptional work across multiple categories, including short form, long form, vlog, music video, and short film.

Throughout January, the Second Life Cinema will feature a nominees reel, giving you the chance to watch highlights from this year’s nominated videos in a shared, inworld theater experience. It is a great way to discover new creators, revisit standout moments from 2025, and start forming your predictions ahead of the awards show. 

 

The awards show at the Cinema will take place February 7 at Noon SL time, and for those who can't make it inworld, it will be streamed live on Youtube.

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" Moves To New Babbage

 

Longtime readers will likely remember the Mystery Science Theater 3000. I first wrote about it for the Second Life Newspaper in 2008, and have occasionally checked in on it. When we last wrote about this venue regularly showing movies so hilariously bad they're good, or at least good for poking fun at, it was in the sim This Island Earth. Checking recently, I found out it had moved, but to a place I hadn't expected. It was now in the steampunk community of New Babbage.

 

Instead of the "Satellite of Love," the place had a more Steam Age look, down to the panels that led to the movie theater when entering the theater. 

 

In the actual theater are panels you can click on for more information, and a group joiner. And of course there's the tip jar to help fund the insanity.

 

The movies at MST3K, cheesy as always, are Tuesdays at 5:30 PM SL time, Wednesdays 6PM, Thursdays at 6PM, and "other events at random dates and times," which are best kept track of by joining the group.

"Machinima Monday" by Chantal Harvey

 

 Longtime residents will likely remember Chantal Harvey, known in Second Life's Golden Age for her work in machinima, films done within virtual worlds and MMOs. Chantal is still around, holding a weekly event around these kinds of videos called "Machinima Monday."

 

We welcome filmers, writers, musicians, actors, movie-fans - hey - everybody is welcome.

I dropped by the other day, in time to see a couple well-done videos. Chantal herself was there in a "camera" avatar, looking like a robot with a few treats on her belt. The others present would share videos, and the others would comment. One was for Madpea, the other a music video. The people thought both were well done.

 The Sci-fi Con is back in Second Life. This salute to all things science-fiction, a Relay for Life fundraising event, started on Friday March 31, and will be going on until Tuesday April 11. There's music events, discussions, movie showings, booths of various science-fiction groups in Second Life, displays, shopping, and more.

Announcement: New Movies At The Happy Vixen

 

 

One of the attractions at the Happy Vixen club is the theater in which between events, people can see a movie. Owner Nydia Tungsten just got a few more, but these are just temporary rentals, so they're available only for a limited time.

The Happy Vixen Movie Theater

There's been a change with the beach venue of the Sunweaver/Angel community. The Happy Vixen Beach club now has a theater one can enjoy watching one of many dozens of movies from cartoons to live action, classics from several decades ago to more recent releases, from memorable films to cheesy flicks. I had a few words with one of the two people behind this new attraction.

Feral Furry Theater Returns to Sunweaver Space

Watching movies at the theater is a pastime that has been around for over a century. With the arrival of cable TV and video tape recorders, people have been able to watch them at home alone. But it's not quite the same as watching with a group of your buddies. In the Sunweaver community, people would watch movies at the inworld theater there, the Feral Furry theater, for years. But when updates to Second Life caused problems for movie viewing, the location was closed. But last Sunday, Shockwave Yareach announced the theater was once again open.

The "Mystery Science Theater 3000" Theater

With this being Thanksgiving week, no doubt a network or two is showing a "turkey" of a movie or two. Here in Second Life, there's a place where you can watch turkeys every day: the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" Theater. Playing some of the worst movies ever to hit real life theaters for over ten years in Second Life, the MST3K place is still around and allowing fans to "riff" at their hearts content. The Newser had a look at the place as it stands today, and a few words with the current owner.

The Formosa

Klaus is back from another of his explorations across Second Life. In his article today, he tells about Second Life's replica of The Formosa. If the same sounds familiar, it was a popular restaurant in Hollywood for many decades with a number of movie stars and others in the film industry eating there through the years until it's closure in 2016 (may reopen). Announcement: The Goblin Cave Brings Movies Back to The Sunweavers

    The Goblin Cave is happy to announce that movies will resume being shown. The screen provided by Cynthia Farshore will run movies from youtube while in the meantime her partner Shockwave Yareach repairs a sever for increase selections and performance. The movies will be shown on Sundays starting at 6PM SLT. This time the movies will be functioning differently than pervious times. The movie starts at 6PM SLT however if you arrive after that time you will still see the beginning of the movie. This is the nature of running from youtube. This will mean that the ones who come in earlier will be seeing the movie more advanced. Please realize that commenting during the movie will be confusing if you are not aware of this. We hope this corrects in the future when the system can run on it's own server but till then at least you have a movie to watch! Since those who come in later will still be seeing the movie the player will be allowed to remain on till all have left the cave. may the ones of the earlier not tell what happens. Also of note, there is a remote monitor on the lower level next to the hot tub so you can relax and watch. The first movie running this Sunday March 18th will be Operation Petticoat.

The New Feral Furry Theater

For quite some time, the "Feral Furry" theater has been a feature at the Sunweaver Estates. But it's been a relatively simple design: a sky platform with a screen and a few seats. But Felina Firmi recently decided to give the place a makeover, so it looks more like a real theater, with posters decorating the exterior. You don't need to buy a ticket at the booth, though.

The place is more than just movies. In the lobby, there's a small arcade of video games. One has to have the right edition of flash installed to play them. Most are from the 1980s, such as Outrun and Q-Bert, though there's a "Bejeweled Blitz" machine with the noted handheld ap game and a "Fix-It-Felix" game that came about only after the "Wreck-It-Ralph" movie about video games did well in the theaters. So it's a bit poetic that Felina put that last game here. This marks the first gaming arcade at the Sunweaver community since the closing of Club Fur.

There's a small projection room with the camera, though most will want to see the movie from the seats. Rather than the packed rows of traditional theaters, the arrangement is more relaxed, with seating around tables mixed in with single-person seats.

Felina is proud of her work, and is looking forward to movie night on Sunday when a number of her neighbors will gather to see the weekly pair of films. One of the two films will be the annual showing of "The Star Wars Holiday Special."

Reader Submitted: The Little Cinema At Road 12

Silent movies may seem like a relic of a bygone era, but they do have a style that some find a refreshing change from the "ready-made fast-food blockbusters" of today. Ciska Riverstone sent in a reader submission about"The Little Cinema." Located in a small building in the Odie sim just off Route 12, it doesn't seem like much on the outside, but one can step in and relax to watch these films that are replaced every Friday afternoon.

Announcement: "Farewell Skull Island"

The Skull Island build at LEA9, which Gemma Cleanslate wrote about earlier, will soon be fading into the mists of the virtual nether. On Tuesday August 30, there's a farewell party planned for one final celebration for the home of the famous movie monster King Kong.

A celebration of Skull Island, featuring Babypea von Phoenix and friends a dance show tribute to King Kong! we say good bye to Kong and Skull island , and hello to Water World .  Followed by the King Kong Ball with music, DJ, and dancing .then Adventure to Skull Island to explore a fantastic sim-wide build that is full of surprises and magical discovery, so much to see and do!  Excellent photo opportunities.This project was made possible in part by a grant from Linden Endowment for the Arts. LEA9's King Kong's Skull Island "Live in New York" Show on Sunday

The Linden Endowment for the Arts sim LEA9 has harbored a setting familiar to classic movie fans: Skull Island, the home of King Kong. Besides the well-detailed exhibit of dinosaurs, snakes, and other creatures, there are occasional events there. One is this Sunday on July 31st, "King Kong's Live in New York Show."

"Watch him smash New York. Will the airplanes destroy him ?

For those dropping in before the event, they can still see King Kong in his cave. Unlike the huge ape in the movie, Second Life's Kong is a bit more easy to get along with.

The event takes place Sunday July 31st at 1PM SL time. There is also a schedule for events next month.

Silverscreen: "Home of the Movies in Second Life" (2008)

In 2007 and 2008, there were a number of examples of real life businesses looking to Second Life as a place to advertise. One such place was Silverscreen, where one could find movie sets of certain motion pictures, such as "Transformers" and "300," in addition to a few freebies of such movies available. Bixyl Shuftan found out about the place in May 2008, and wrote the following for Second Life Newspaper.

1920's Chicago Roleplay

Fritter Enzyme is back from exploring an American city from an earlier time. In the 1920's Chicago roleplay area, visitors are welcome to drop in and look around. You can get yourself some outfits that fit the era, drop in at the local movie theater, the local speakeasy, an art exhibit, or even a burlesque show. One can also take part in the gang wars if one desires. Though take note, the morgue and undertaker are around for a reason.

Update on Mystery Science Theater 3000

When a friend told me he was a fan of the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" show from the 1990s, I told him about the location in Second Life where all of those cheesy B movies were being shown (click here for the 2008 article). But years later, was it still around?

The answer is yes, though the place has changed. Gone is the mock-up of the Satellite of Love. Instead, the place looks like a classic cinema, with Crow and Tom Servo on each side, and with a snack bar up front. But there's no admission fee, just go on in, and you'll see the featured film from the beginning. There's plenty of seating, and even late at Sunday night I found a few others watching the show. So you too can "riff" the movies in good company (provided you started seeing it at the same time).

For those who don't know, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" was a comedy show on television in which the "plot" is of a man, sent out into space by a mad scientist and made to watch B-rated movies as part of an experiment to see just how terrible movies have to be and see in how much of a quantity before watchers go insane. But their subject keeps his sanity by poking fun at the flicks, or "riffing," alongside robots that he built, the two shown most in the movie being Tom Servo and Crow. The show ran on the Comedy Central channel from 1991 to 1997, and the Sci-Fi Channel from 1997 to 1999. After it's cancellation, the show continued in reruns for years, and eventually in Second Life.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Cinema is at This Island Earth (194/159/22). There's also a group you can join, presumably to be updated of when the movies change.
