Second Life Newser at SL9B

And here's our office exhibit at the Second Life Birthday Event, courtesy of Qwark Allen. It's just about ready. Nearby are attractions such as the "First Church of Rosedale" waterslide, DrFran Babcock & Ariel Loonie's city park plot, and Mikati Slade's cake can be seen in the background.

June 18 is the big day, only three days left. Builders have even less, just two days before the sims are closed and it's time to "put the hammers down" on June 17th. The day is also "Press Day," in which the media gets a look at the place, at least the media which isn't already here.

The Second Life Newser office exhibit is at DreamSeeker SL9B Kyuu (86, 76, 21)

Virtual Railway Consortium Gives Thanks to Former Leader

Second Life Newser recently reported on a resignation in the Virtual Railway Consortium, it's former Secretary Stryker Jenkins. Since then, there has been an official statement from the VRC, thanking him for his service.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

On behalf of all VRC members, thank you to Stryker Jenkins for his tireless service in the group, specifically in the official role of Secretary from which he recently resigned. Stryker's dedication to the group leadership work will be missed, and we're grateful that he plans to continue the many voluntary efforts he's done for the group, including mapmaking, building, recruiting new members, maintaining the website, and more.
Striker's hard work during his term has made it possible to manage the group with much less effort than before, but we do need to elect a new Secretary to fill the vacant position; we plan to initiate the formal election process after SL9B has concluded and well before major work begins on Rail Rally 2012.

The VRC is a bigger and more active group in Second Life than ever before, in many ways due to Stryker's diligent participation. We hope his interest will continue and grow along with the group.

Thank you Stryker!

SL9B Preparations contined

Opening day is coming soon!! ( the 18th of June) As an Exhibit Assistant I have had the privilege of helping the exhibitors get their plots going, setting music for them, chasing prims that flew across the sims and enjoying it all. It has been very busy!!

As I stood trying to do my work after meeting builders on their plot, they were throwing up creations right around my feet! Some were so excited to have their builds placed immediately. It was great fun. One prim became 250 in about 4 minutes! Some creators are still holding theirs in their sandboxes or or pockets til the last moment. But a look at the 20 sims on the map tells the story. Most plots are full.

The spirit of cooperation among the whole staff has been outstanding. The exhibitors for the most part have been so grateful for any assistance we could give them. It is a wonderful experience to be part of it all. I recommend you all set aside lots of time to visit. There are so many plots. 300 besides that, the stages for performers and for DJ parties, and an auditorium for meetings and learning. There is also a pod ride for the eastern and one for the western areas. Taking the ride will be fun as you will hear about some of the surrounding builds as you pass along the roads. You will find it near the entrance.

The birthday cake is a decoration to behold. It occupies the center of the whole 20 sims. Take a look at the map when you come and you will see it!

SL9B Update:

A note from the "Prim Reaper" reminding those who haven't built anything on their plots to go ahead and get started, "If you’re waiting for the last-minute to start, well, that last-minute is here! SL9B opens on the 18th of June but you only have until 11.59pm on June 16 SLT to complete your build. At that time the sims will close and everyone will be asked to leave. ... This means you now have less than 4 days to complete your builds. Or even, start your builds. Don’t leave it till the even more last-minute than last-minute!"

"Operation Bronze," and Other Relay for Life Events

The high point of the Relay for Life fundraising season, the Relay Weekend, is about a month away. But the teams haven't been slowing down. Last Saturday, various DJs played at ACS Island in "Operation Bronze" to raise money not for their own teams, but the ones with small total amounts raised this year. Besides that, there was the Lollygagger Lane Street Fair, a tiny car race, and other events.

Angels Beach Land Rentals

At the Angels Beach Land Rental Agency, you can find a new and good home in Second Life. With thirteen sims to choose from, in the Sunweaver Estates, Sherkin Island, and Purrfection, you can choose from a variety of environments.

We offer places with friendly and interesting neighbors. Some places have a tropical island look, others more temperate. Some of the sims have access to enough water to boat around in. And there are plans later on for an open water sim for even more water activities. The sims are home to a number of quality clubs, such as Cutlass and Zero Gravity. In one sim alone there are 4 quality clubs that work together so there is no lag from them. There are also some small shopping areas available.

The sims range from Mature to Adult, but the purpose of the adult rating is for a relaxed atmosphere in which couples can relax. The places do not allow for harassment, and while there are vendors that cater to mature tastes they are discreet about it. Spaces available range from small plots to a full homestead that will rent out for only $26,500L's per month. Most of the sims break the parcels down into 512 Sqm parcels and and most have a sliding rent scale, so the more you rent the cheaper it gets. Our prices are VERY competitive here in Second Life.

And if you bring a friend to an Angels Beach area, you get more than just a good neighbor. Anyone that refers a renter to us and they rent land, they will recieve 10% of the first months rent. And if someone you know needs help renting out land on his/her sim, bring them to us. Renters who bring in a sim owner needing administration, we will give 10% of our first check.

To learn more, please contact Nydia Tungsten or Brandi Streusel.

"We pride ourselves on on not just renting land but renting our customers the land you want. We listen to what you tell us on what you are looking for."

Events this Week in Second Life from June 12th to June 18th

It's a week full of events on the Grid. The Second Life Ninth Birthday isn't until next Monday, but there is plenty to do until then. The Grid offers a number of music venues, both DJ and live music, science and news & comment talk shows, book and poetry readings, and much more.

Passionate Redheads Meeting Tonight

Dusk Griswold, the Captain of the Passionate Redheads Relay for Life team, has called for a team meeting for tonight.

I am going to host a meeting this Tuesday at 6pm SL time on Tuesday, June 12. It will be held at Club Cutlass, and I hope to see a lot of you there. I will make it brief and input is always welcome. Hope to see you there!"

SL9B Update

In Crap Mariner's latest SL9B video, #21, the "Prim Reaper" takes a look at one of the fun things to do at the Birthday event, the "Church of Rosedale" waterslide. While there, be comes across a certain "Fox Reporter." ;-)

So far, things are progressing at the SL9B nicely. With a week to go, already lots of exhibits are completed or almost complete. The moderators are giving names and music streams to the plots. An SLB tradition will be happening once again, the "Time Capsule." And Sunday June 17th has been scheduled as Press Day for bloggers and others in the Second Life media to get an early peek at the exhibits (although one certain newsletter got an even earlier one). If you want to see some snapshots of what's already up, you can check the SL9B Community Flickr page.

As for our own exhibit, Gemma Cleanslate's partner Qwark Allen has graciously offered to help us out. We've talked about what to do and exchanged ideas. One surprise I got was a reaction to the hat which I planned originally as a placeholder, but people seeing it have complemented it, DrFran Babcock saying she knew it was my place upon seeing it. So by popular demand, we're making it part of the build. We've also given it one fancy feature: click and select "sit," and you'll get a bird's eye view of the sim.

So what will it finally look like? Well, you'll see. For now, here's a view of the hat's position.

Rasmuson Gallery of Alaskan Artists

Grey Lupindo recently went to the Rasmuson Gallery of Alaskan Artists. The gallery made news recently when there was a live simultaneous broadcast between Fairbanks Alaska and the sim in Second Life. Grey looks at the exhibits and some information about the artists who took part.

Beach Party at Steelhead

There was a beach party at the Steelhead Estates last Friday. And a number of the residents joined Sheriff Fuzzball Ortega and his girl Eugene, and danced to the tunes at the ready-made beach. Some were in Victorian-Era full body swimsuits, others in swimwear from later times.

The place across the road read "Hotel Coral Essex." But the neon sign had the "Ho" "C" and "Es" blinking so it read ... well, something else entirely. Also, a "land shark" was digging underneath the surface of the sand, but stayed safely away from the partiers.

As the people danced to the 80s tunes, such as "Weird Science" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World (appropriate for the mad scientists in the crowd), people talked and joked about various things. At one point, Fuzzball was asked about volunteering to wear a dress if enough was raised for the Relay for Life Steelhead Salmons. His answer, "You know how hard it is to top 'The Hair?' "

A fun time was had by all.

Two Years of Second Life Newser

It's been two years since our newspaper began it's operations. Two years of covering the Grid. Both in real life and Second Life, many businesses starting up fail to last that long. But Second Life Newser has, and is still going strong.

In celebrating our success, there is also the matter of where we came from. All of Second Life Newser's original staff once worked at another paper, Second Life Newspaper, run by owner JamesT Juno and Editor Dana Vanmoer. Two of us signed on when the paper was about a year old, and by that time it had gone from a blog to an established online newspaper. When it celebrated it's second anniversary, it was at it's peak. Sadly, this level of success was not to last. Events in real life caught up with it's founder, and then the editor. And so, the decision was made to close the paper.

So what was there for the staff to do? We didn't want to stop writing and we didn't want the team to end. So we started anew, under a new name and with a new editor and owner in one person. I was happy with how things had been with James and Dana. But times change, and it was time to move forward on our own.

It's been a challenge, one of our first being a Second Life seemingly in crisis. If Second LIfe Newspaper spent it's first couple years covering a growing Grid in its prime, Second Life Newser spent it's first few months covering a Grid in crisis. One week after our founding, Linden Lab laid of a third of it's staff, including some people whom had won the affection of the residents (not an easy feat for a Linden). Then came the Emeraldgate mess with some of the staff behind the most popular viewer exposed as troublemakers. And then came the announcement of plans to merge the Teen Grid with the Main, which terrified some with visions of censorship and lawsuits.

Another challenge was having to prove ourselves once again. Although Dana's last act for SL Newspaper was to provide a link to our new paper, only a small fraction of its readers followed us. But some were willing to take a chance with us from the beginning. Nydia Tungsten and Ranchan Wiedman arranged for an office at the Sunweaver Estates free of charge, in addition to Book Island offering a store space. We made a little money through adverts. Then Jacek Shuftan of the Podex Exchange came forward to offer a sponsorship. Over a year later, Podex continues to happily sponsor the Newser. Plus The Steelhead Estates and more recently Mama Allpa have made cash sponsorship deals as well.

And our readership has grown. I've heard of numerous complements along the way, thanking us for delivering the news about major events such as the Relay for Life, memorials such as the Vietnam Wall and Twin Towers, art festivals such as Burn2, of the various people who've made the Grid a better place, and about issues such as the goings-on of Linden Lab. To these complements, we say thank you.

It's been a lot of work, but over time we've seen lot of new places and met a number of fascinating people, in the process making a number of new friends. By all means we're not perfect. So much goes on the Grid, it can't all be covered. And even if we're there, occasionally some breaking news comes in and we can't give the coverage we previously planned. And sadly a couple people from the team have had to drop out when events in real life required their full attention. Fortunately we've had new people coming in to join us.

And the future? As of the writing of this article, the Grid has lasted about nine years. Despite the blunders of Linden Lab, as well as the popularity of handheld devices like the iPhone and social media sites like Facebook, it has continued to hold it's own. It's safe to say that baring some unexpected catastrophe, it will be around for at least a few more.

In the meantime, we'll continue to keep writing about the people, places, and events, big and small, across this virtual world called Second Life for as long as we can. And by all means feel free to leave a comment, or send us an email.

Cartoon of the Day

The punch line is "land shark" meaning a speculator in real estate, and not the character from "Saturday Night Live."

by Bixyl Shuftan

Sunweavers' Royal Ball

As big as "Tiny Empires" is at the Sunweavers Estate, it was probably inevitable sooner or later the theme at Club Cutlass would be "Royal Ball." And so many of us came over dressed in our best outfits. One girl told me her outfit was a copy of a 1550 fashion. Probably the only exception was Zorro, who showed up as "Robin Hood." DJ Ibyan played the tunes that night, a combination of new and old tunes.

The Venus Transit Seen in Second Life

On Tuesday June 5th was a rare occurrence in space. For a brief time, Venus' orbit took it between the Earth and the Sun in what is called a Venus Transit. From Earth, it appeared to be a black spot against the Sun. For those whom couldn't see it in real life due to thick clouds or a lack of safe equipment, they could see live footage in some places in Second Life, such as the University of Hawaii.

For some hours, there was footage of the planet's shadow causing a black dot in the image from the sun. Not everyone saw it from screens inworld, as there were also websites with live footage that were shared through instant messages and group chats.

Interest in science was alive and well that night.

D-Day Commemoration

On June 6th, a D-Day commemoration was held in Second Life. Both the Flying Tigers and New Bastogne's German groups met at the WW2 Battlefield for a simulated battle as a way to honor those who fought in the real battle 68 years ago. Second Life Newser was there to get a few pictures of the action, and the meeting after the battle.

Burn2 "Burniversity-athon" Event

The Burn2 group is having an event today, with what they call the first of their "Burniversity," or rather their "Burniversity-athon." Here, one can get a few lessons on building, and what to expect at the real Burning Man art festival, which Burn2 is based on.

It may be June, but for us it's back to school -- Burn2 style. Join us at our very first Burniversity-athon, this Saturday, the 9th of June 2012. Here's the whole schedule!

9a-10a SLT – DMV workshop with EmCee Widget: How to build a basic art car.

10a-11a SLT – Burning Man 101 with Ronon Carver: How to prepare for Burning Man – what to take, what to expect, basic survival, questions and answers.

12n-2p SLT – Sound and Lag with Lorin Tone: How to use sound effectively in your builds.

2p-3p SLT – Poetry Workshop with Jilly Kidd.

3p-4p – Synchronized performances with Klark Harvy: How to create synchronized performances in Second Life. The first half hour is a demonstration of synchronized male dancers; the second half hour is a discussion of how to create these synchronized performances.

Come and join us, and get the jump on Burn2!

There was no location given as to where in Deep Hole the event was (this location was once their information tent): Burning Man Deep Hole (96, 6, 25).

"Star Wars The Old Republic" Dropping in Numbers

It wasn't that long ago in which the "Star Wars: The Old Republic" Massive Multiplayer Online Game was making the news. Developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts and LucasArts, the game was released in December 2011, and quickly gained a huge following. Within a week, it was believed to have hosted about a million players. By March, their numbers were at 1.7 million. While not really as much as World of Warcraft, it did look like the game had given new life to the Multiplayer Online Games genre.

But this level of success was not to last. By May, numbers were down to 1.3 million subscribers. The result was that there were layoffs in the game's development team, even though the company officially expressed confidence their numbers would rebound. One analyst commented that after SWTOR's plateauing and fall, "No one is buying MMOs … there is just no demand for game assets right now."

SWTOR did set one interesting record, "At over 200,000 lines of recorded dialogue, the game has scored a record for having the largest amount of voice acting not only for a video game, but for any entertainment project." Also in what seems like a nod to the noted incident in WoW in which a plague struck the game, SWTOR had it's own "Rakghoul Plauge" outbreak.

The "Old Republic" hasn't emerged as a "WoW killer." Still, thanks to numbers of Star Wars fans, it won't be going away anytime soon.
