Sixteen Years Of The Newser

In Spring 2010, the staff of the Second Life Newspaper faced a dilemma. It had not been a good past several months. A sponsor went under, forcing them to abandon their office and build a new smaller one elsewhere. The owner and founder JamesT Juno was facing real-life difficulties and had to take an indefinite break from Second Life. And Editor Dana Vanmoer was spending less and less time inworld due to real-life as well. Finally in their April meeting, Dana announced she was having to close the paper. It was news that shocked the rest of us, some having been writing for the "Gray Lady" of SL for most of it's three and a half year history.

So we talked amongst ourselves, and four of us, Gemma Cleanslate, Grey Lupindo, Shirley Sands, and Bixyl Shuftan (myself) made the decision to start a new newsletter. Since I was the one with the most experience, being Dana's assistant editor aka Office Manager, I would be the owner and editor. And so on June 5 2010, the day the Second Life Newspaper made it's last entry, the Second Life Newser would start.

Sadly, our first topic was covering the retirement of the established paper. Following that were a few routine articles. Then came shocking news. Linden Lab was laying off a third of it's staff. This would include some popular Lindens. Then came news of then CEO M Linden stepping down and Philip Linden returning as interim CEO. We would cover a happy event as expected, the Second Life Birthday, the SL7B, though we also reported on the close of the classic Greenies sim which longtime residents from the early days still look back on fondly. And there was the office and land donated to us by Ranchan Wiedman of the Sunweaver/Angels community. It was an active first month. As the year went on, we would report on the Relay for Life, the Emeraldgate scandal, the decision to merge the teen grid and the older teens, Universal demanding Linden Lab shut down the Battlestar Galactica roleplay and then pulling back, Ozimal bunnies taking Amareto horses to real-life court, Philip stepping down and the new CEO Rod Humble stepping in, and the real-life news network CNN closing it's location in SL. To help us out, Breezes Babi and Any1 Gynoid would join the team. We would also get our first sponsor, the Podex Exchange owned by Jacek Shuftan (no relation). 2010 was a pretty active year.

Since then the Newser team has continued to report the news, big and small, of the people, places, and events in this crazy and wonderful virtual world. There have been no shortage of problems, the occasional griefer, drama that can end a group or community, sims closing down, the occasional questionable move by Linden Lab (in the past this happened more often), and saddest of all people passing away. But there's also been plenty of good, memorials set up to honor soldiers and others who gave their all, support groups to help those with troubled thoughts, people tweaking the mechanics of this virtual world to explore it's possibilities, people who found friendships and comradery here, charities that help people in real life such as Team Diabetes, Homes For Our Troops, and the Relay for Life, and much more.

Sadly, over time people have had to drop out of the Newser team due to real-life concerns. Grey Lupindo and Shelly Sands would drop out after a couple years. But we've had others step up to contribute to virtual journalism such as DrFran Babcock and Grease Coakes. Today, the Newser consists of three full time staff. Gemma Cleanslate (who is currently under medical leave) and myself remain from the original team, with Netera Landar having rejoined us and is productive as ever.

Sixteen years later, Second Life is a very different place. The few sims owned by corporations and US Government agencies are gone. Mesh has changed the way people build. The people have themselves changed with the Boomers and Gen Xers slowly giving way to more Millenials and Zoomers. But what hasn't changed is people still want to know what's going on. And it's up to newsletters such as the Newser to deliver. We're not perfect and occasionally we miss something. But we're persistent. Every day we post something, even if it's just a video or cartoon. But we inform as well as entertain. Our mission as always is to report the news big and small on the people, places, and events of this virtual world. And we will continue to do so.

Special thanks to JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer for showing us the ropes. Special thanks to Ranchan Wiedman and the Sunbeamer and Angels community for giving us our office. Special thanks to Linden Lab for giving us this virtual world to start with (but we still wonder about some of our strategies). And of course special thanks to you the readers without whom this newsletter would not be possible.

And that's the way it is. Good day from the Second Life Newser.

Join the Newser For a PARTY!

It was today, sixteen years ago, in which the Second Life Newser began.. It was quite an eventful month, in which we wrote about the end of the classic "Greenies" sim, the decline of Ozimal breedable pet bunnies, the Relay for Life, the Second Life Seventh Birthday, and of course Linden Lab laying off thirty percent of it's workforce followed soon by the resignation of then CEO M Linden. And since then, the Newser and it's writers have kept on going.

And now, we're taking a moment to celebrate. There will be a party at the Happy Vixen Beach club tomorrow, Saturday June 6, from Noon to 2PM. There will be a small contest prize (CAYA) up for grabs. It's a chance talk to some of the reporters, and a moment to celebrate journalism in this virtual world.

Purrfection Estates (236, 219, 24)

*Addition* It slipped my mind earlier to mention the party was on Saturday, for some reason.

Sixteen Years of Writing Second Life News

It was sixteen years ago this month in which my Second Life as I knew it started. I had only recently started logging on regularly, was wanting to find out more about this virtual world, and began reading forums, blogs, and newsletters. This included the Second Life Newspaper, which had a number of writers who wrote about the people, places, and events across the Grid. Eventually, they posted an invitation to the readers to submit articles or pictures, and so I did. The owner was happy, and asked for more. And eventually, I was asked over for an interview, and got a job here as a virtual journalist, Second Life's "Fox Reporter."

It's been quite a journey writing the news, the first few years of which are a story unto themselves, after which my role changed from one of Second Life Newspaper's reporters to Second Life Newser's leader, once again the first few years of this getting their own story. But I was, and still am, still writing about the people, places, and events big and small across the virtual world.

Much has changed from the early days. Many sims and a few communities have closed. People have left. But other places have opened and more people have come in. The place has gone from the darling of the tech media with a few major real-life corporations here to a place online that occasionally makes real-life news. Linden Lab's role has also changed somewhat, taking a more active role, taking part in more events and directly running one of the continents. Early on, I'd report on the occasional Linden blunder. But over the years, such blunders have gotten fewer and farther between, though still happen.

And I've changed a little as well after all these years. In real life, I've gotten grayer, gone through a career change, and sadly lost some friends and family. But I've also gotten some friends over the years as well, and dear Charlee. And of course I'm still a writer at heart, and will be continuing to report the news here in Second Life with my team for some time to come.

"And that's the way it is." Good day from the Second Life Newser

Want More SL16B Photos?

For those who want to see more pictures of the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday, we have some good news. While we may or may not have the time to do another article, there are other pictures out there.

There's a Flickr page for SL16B screenshots: https://www.flickr.com/groups/secondlifebirthdaycelebrations/

One photogrpaher, Aevalle Galicia, has been especially busy with the camera, taking a lot of pictures such as of the "Postwar Prosperity" exhibit above: https://www.flickr.com/photos/aevallegalicia/

Farewell SL16B

As halfway expected due to the takedown announcement on Sunday, when I tried teleporting into the sims yesterday, Monday July 8, I was unable to do so. The sims had been closed. And so, the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday, "Sweet Sixteen," has come to a close.

The Newser will have one or two more stories, maybe more, about the SL16B later.

Do you the readers have any stories? Please send any you want printed to the SL Newser : bixylshuftan@gmail.com

The SL16B Offical Events End

The evening of June 30 would see the last of the official events at the SL16B. The Festival stage would have it's final show from 9 to 10 PM. For the Spin Master stage, they would go on for a couple more hours.

The final DJ event was by DJ NinjaClaus from 10PM to a bit past Midnight. I saw about 53 avatars on the map.

While this is the end of the scheduled music events, it's not the end of the Second Life Birthday. The sims will still be up until July 8, For some whose computers are more affected by lag, this will be the time to enjoy the exhibits the most as they won't be slowed down by the crowds at the stages. At least not so much. It seems there are plans for at least two more goodbye parties, and there could be some impromptu ones as a DJ takes the stage and invites anyone there at the time to come on over.

Stay tuned for more stories about the exhibits, and last week's "Meet the Lindens."

Scenes From The SL16B

Quite a lot has been going on at the SL16B. Numerous musicians have been playing, such as Jaycatt and Frogg at the Festival Stage on Sunday June 23. There's a youtube of their performance available (link).

But there were other performers at other stages, such as on Monday June 24, when DJ Lia (Female Winslet) played her music at the Spinmasters Stage.

There were plenty of exhibits to see, such as "Torgon Woodget's Fun Fair Time," with it's roller coaster, made to look like a birthday cake.
https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL16B%20Enchant/82/93/24/

Besides the resident and group made exhibits, there were examples of upcoming Linden Home varieties. At SL16B Spellbound, there were some campers and trailers up for display.

There's also the "Meet The Lindens" events, such as when Patch Linden appeared on Monday May 24 (video link).

Patch Linden had much to say. Among which, he stated that there would be no new games by Linden Lab soon as the Lindens and Moles had been concentrating on getting the new Linden Homes out, as well as organizing the SL16B. Of the new continent Belliseria, he stated there would soon be railroads and a ferry there, as well as commercial areas. Of the rainbow Magellan statue, he stated that was part of a new "Fairgrounds" area, much like the one at Bay City's North Channel.

More to come on the Second Life Birthday

SL16B Opens Today

After months of anticipation and weeks of preparing, the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday celebrations start today. Beginning at 10AM today, the grounds of the SL16B will be open to the public. The official welcome areas are at SL16B Pizzazz (129/244/23) amd at SL16B Impressive (127/7/23), But one can drop in anywhere in the sims

Many of the exhibits are a fun look at the 1950s, the era Linden Lab takes a nod at with the "Sweet Sixteen" theme.

But the 50s weren't all fun and games. "The Forgotten War" exhibit by Prokofy Neva and Henry Hutchence looks at the Korean War, in which over thirty thousand Americans met their end, at SL16B Sparkle (175/112/23).

And among the exhibits there are those by the Second Life Newser. Once again, Silvia Ametza has volunteered her time and talent, and came up with this scale build of the United Nations Headquarters building in New York City. Completed in 1952, it's been the meeting place of the organization that makes up most every nation. Considering Second Life's international userbase, it's a fitting exhibit.
SL16B Sparkle (153/36/24).

To keep up with the goings-on, there is a Calendar of Events.

Have a happy Second Life Birthday.

Applications Being Accepted For SL16B Live Music Faire Auditions

On Wednesday May 22, Linden Lab announced it was taking applications for the live music event for Second Life's sixteenth anniversary, the "SL16B Live Music Faire."

In recent years we’ve taken the popular idea of music festivals and brought them into the virtual world - all the music, merriment, and good times without the sunburn. Last year marked the 4th Music Fest, and this year, things are going to be a little different! We do have a Music Faire that we’re very excited to announce! Like Music Fest, Music Faire is a way to enjoy a ton of live music within Second Life as part of the birthday celebrations.

We’re holding an audition showcase to highlight some of the musical talent in the Second Life community. Many of you have been performing for years in virtual venues all over the grid, and we’d love to have you come showcase your talent. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, rock and roll to electronica - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration.

Those wanting to sign up for auditions are asked to complete an application on the signup page (here) by Saturday June 1. "While we encourage everyone to sign up," Linden Lab stated, "it is not a commitment on your part and does not guarantee a spot at the auditions." Invitations to the auditions will be sent via notecard and/or email.

The dates and times of the auditions are as follows:

May 27, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
May 28, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
May 29, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
May 30, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
May 31, 2019 6 AM - 3 PM (SLT)
June 3, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
June 4, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
June 5, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
June 6, 2019 6 AM - 6 PM (SLT)
June 7, 2019 6 AM - 3 PM (SLT)

The location will be given "in a future blogpost." Every musician will have five minutes at most to play.

The Lab also stated it was extending Exhibitor and Performer applications to Friday May 31. Merchant applications for the shopping event will close a day later.
