At The Bouncing Bunny Beach Club

Yesterday, I had a little time, and dropped by the Sunweaver's smaller beach club, the Bouncing Bunny Beach Club. Skylark Lefavre, aka DJ Snowy, played the tunes. The theme was "Desert," so most of us had avatars, or clothes, that matched the theme.

The BBBC has events every Sunday from 3 to 5PM and is at SunWaterThree (75/56/25).

Real-Life News: Burning Man 2023 A Muddy Mess

For fans of Burning Man, this was a year that will be remembered not so much for the art, music, and the Burning of The Man, but for the mud.

Last weekend was the high point of the Burning Man art and music festival in Black Rock Nevada, which normally has the high point of the event, the Burning of The Man, a huge wooden effigy, on Saturday night. But then the normally dry desert ended up getting heavy rains. The result was ground turning into a muddy mess. People ended up covering their shoes in plastic bags so they wouldn't get stuck in the thick muck. With people unable to leave, or order fresh supplies, people were asked to conserve food and water. Some grumbled at their festival quite literally dampened. Others just took things it stride. There was also a death at the event when a man was discovered having died for reasons still unknown. The Burning of The Man ended up postponed until Monday so things could dry out. But by then, many had taken advantage of the roads finally being driveable again, and there was a jam of people trying to leave.

For Second Life, Burning Man has had a long-lasting connection. In the late 1990s, many of the original staff of Linden Lab, including it's founder and first CEO Philip Rosedale, would attend and be impressed by the temporary city of attendees having been so quickly created out of nothing, which helped inspire the creation of Second Life. Second Life would have reflections of the Burning Man festival almost since the beginning, taking place in October. They would be sponsored by Linden Lab until 2010, called Burning Life. In 2010, Linden Lab would cut off it's support, and the Burners would run the event on their own, renaming it Burn2. Eventually there would be spinoff events at other times of the year. In 2022, a split among Burning Man fans in real life would be reflected in Second Life with a "Renegade" Burn being held in the virtual world, as well as real life.

Return to The Deathlands

Today, the Newser takes a look at the location of one of our sponsors, "The Deathlands." Run by Rebel Wolf, aka "The Baron," the place is "an isolated post-apocalyptic island community where a handful of hardy survivors desperately cling to what passes for life after the nuclear winter." I dropped by to check out it's shooting area, and ran into Rebel who showed me around. There was plenty to see.

New Sponsor: The Deathlands

The Newser has a new sponsor today: The Deathlands. The place is a roleplay area described as "an isolated post-apocalyptic island community where a handful of hardy survivors desperately cling to what passes for life after the nuclear winter." The place is run by Rebel Wolf (HermitBlue).

All species of visitors are welcomed, though please mind the rules, notably no flying, no laggy gestures and light shows, and above all no child avatars.

The Deathlands

What would life be like after a cataclysm destroyed life as we know it? What if the life you once knew, or your parents knew, was a distant memory of times of plenty as you yourself just scrape by with few pleasures. That in a nutshell describes the environment of "The Deadlands," a roleplay sim of life after the apocalypse. I recently had a tour of the place from the owner. But not everything was bleak. While there, a party was thrown.

Building Begins For Burn2 Radical Ritual in October

Besides Halloween, October in Second Life is also known for the main Burn2 festival. Although the "Burners" as they're called have spinoff events around the year, October has always been the time of the original of the yearly events, based on the real-life Burning Man festival in Black Rock Nevada and originally called Burning Life, that have taken place in Second Life from it's first year. Klaus Bereznyak had a look at the preparations for the "Octoburn" from the scene of the event as the people behind it get ready. This year's theme: "Radical Ritual."

Game Review: Conan Exiles

One of the newer survival games out there that's been getting a little chatter is "Conan Exiles." Many are probably familiar with the title character from the 1982 movie. But there's been a number of games about him and his stories, including an MMO from several years ago. The survival game is a bit glitchy, more than a little buggy, and deals with a subject some will have a problem with: slavery.

Tableau

Becky Shamen's travels across Second Life recently took her to a dusty place called Tableau. Set in a desert, the place is a ghost town with few clues as to what could have caused the people to abandon the place (okay, maybe one big clue). Becky described the place, in case you the readers wish to go and find out what happened.

Tellus

Theonlyjohnny has been looking for roleplay sims, and found one that caught his attention: Tellus. Tellus caught his attention as it has a city of greenery thriving in the middle of the desert. But there was more to the place than that, as he would write about.

Seraph City and Dryland, to Close

Yesterday came some news that two places in Second Life would soon be closing their doors, Seraph City and Dryland.

Seraph City was made in the style of the early 20th Century view of the urban experience of the future, or "Dieselpunk" as it was branded. There were numerous buildings, such as shops, as well as a train and a couple cars. The main buildings were the town hall, located next to the SURL I came across, and the "Seraph Club," a place that could easily hold a crowd  and was made with live events in mind.

There was quite a bit to see. The old fashioned advertisements and signs added to the feel of the place.

Seraph City was one of the locations in "The Blackened Mirror" Second Life show, as well as where one of the characters came from.

It is still unknown as to why Seraph City is closing, which is set for mid-March. The group for it's fans has been closed to new entries. It did state, "Please direct any questions to Bromo Ivory or Edward Pearse."

More pictures of Seraph City can be found on Daniel Voyager's Flickr. There is also a Seraph City blog (link), but it hasn't been updated in a while.

"Dryland" is located in the Mado sim. In January, Second Life Newser was here when the "Lost Second Life" (link) exhibit by Ziki Questi was set up here. And now irronicaly this sim itself will soon be lost.

Designed by Anita Witt, a notecard I picked up stated she was, "Inspired by the man-made disaster that is the giant dried out Aral Sea in Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan" caused when the body of water shrank after rivers feeding it were diverted by the Communist government for collective farms. The result was that towns and villages that once depended on the sea were abandoned when their source of livelihood dried up.

The sim has a sense of being an abandoned wasteland, with scattered abandoned ships and buildings, and numerous other wrecks and debris. A lighthouse was still running, providing light for sea traffic that no longer existed. Not far from what was left of the water was a small carnival of some kind.

Inara Pey says the sim will most likely close in late March, quoting Anita, "I thought I’d give you all a fair warning in case you have photos or machinimas to make that requires a Dryland background, or if you’d just like to hang out one last time before it’s all gone."

Last Look at Burn2

Burn2 is gone for another year. But Second Life Newser was able to drop by it's location and snap some pictures before the builds were to be taken down. While we didn't get pictures of everything, there were many examples of artistic expression there.

See the pictures in Events.

Death in the Desert

Grey Lupindo recently checked out a detective game area, "Death in the Desert." You as the investigator start out with file with some information and a list of suspects. Going about, one finds more clues, and a few freebies, and people to talk to, adding up the information as to who to arrest.

Motorcycle Mania on Route 66

Becky "Sha" Shamen has been out "on the road again" exploring. This time, she went on horseback to take a look at a place made for a group of motorcycle fans. Members of the group get to travel across twelve picturesque sims with a Southwest American desert theme. And crossing it, Becky came across numerous bikers, biker hangouts, and miles of dry desert. So how did Becky fare during her exploring?

"Pie Day" at the Happy Vixen

On March 14, some people showed up a little early at the Happy Vixen beach club. So with no party yet, and considering the date was 3.14 or "Pi(e) Day," pastries were ordered. And it wasn't long before someone tossed one at another, and then the deserts started flying.

With the water nearby to wash anyone, it was a fun day for all except possibly for the janitor.
