Eye On The Blog: Linden Lab's 10th Birthday Announcement
Yesterday, Linden Lab made a brief announcement concerning Second Life's tenth anniversary next month.
For seven of it's first eight years, Linden Lab regularly held official birthday celebrations. Weeks before the time of the ninth birthday, they announced they were basically turning it over to the residents. Their announcement seemed to express favor for different communities holding their own celebrations rather than people organizing for an official celebration, which is what happened as residents came together to organize SL9B on their own.
Whatever "fun things" Linden Lab is planning, we can only guess. But considering their "surprise" for the residents on Valentines Day this year, residents can be forgiven for not expecting much. Once again, they seem to be suggesting the different communities hold their own celebrations, though they are acknowledging the resident-organized SL10B event in June.
So far, there's been less discussion over the tenth anniversary than the ninth received last year. This seems a little odd as ninth anniversaries are usually more low key as people usually feel stronger about celebrating a decade. Then again, last year people were more concerned about the Lab having abdicated it's role. This time residents were ready and able to start organizing one a little earlier this year.
Currently applications are being taken for those wanting to take part in the celebrations as exhibitors, performers, staff, etc. But not for long. Applications close in four days on May 20th.
