Saturday, October 1th 10 AM PDT
“The Science of Nail Polish”
By Paul Doherty Ph.D - Patio Plasma
Senior Scientist, Exploratorium, San Francisco
Classic nail polish is made from explosive nitrocellulose dissolved in a flammable solvent — no smoking. Modern gel polishes use light activated polymerization. Pigments and special effects are borrowed from physics; birefringent, thermochromic, magnetic and more. A great deal of science can be learned by studying painted nails.
