EOTB: The Environmental Enhancement Project is Online
In the official Second Life blog yesterday, Linden Lab announced that after a few years in development, the Environmental Enhancement Project, or "EEP" for short, was fully ready and part of the Grid and regular viewer.
The big day is here! The Environmental Enhancement Project has been released grid-wide. As of today the default viewer download and all regions on the grid fully support EEP!
In short, EEP offers big improvements in how one can modify the sky, water settings, and day cycles in one's sim or parcel. One can create and modify "environmental objects," and even sell them to others. You can have up to four different sky levels with very different appearances. The Sun, Moon, and cloud textures can be replaced with custom ones. One can change the four-hour day/night cycle in Second Life to 24 hours, or even a 168 hours (seven days), and more.
Besides the video about EEP provided by the Lab, one can also check out the Wiki page. Inara Pey would also write a tutorial and a primer.

The Bellisseria Anniversary Rock and Sail
This weekend from Friday to Sunday, the first anniversary of the opening of the Linden Home continent of Bellisseria. On all three days, there were music and dance parties in the Fairgrounds. But on Friday and Saturday, there was also the "Rock and Sail." This was a boat parade from a spot on the middle of the western coast to the Fairground island. Gemma decided to take part in the Friday parade, which would be the longest journey she ever made by water.

World of Warcraft: Quest For Vulpera
So what do Second Life residents do when they're not playing Second Life? Many of my friends play online games. And recently a new playable race has gotten the attention of some on World of Warcraft, to play as a foxlike Vulpera. So how can one be a fox in Warcraft as well as in Second Life? Well, it's not easy, and yours truly is only partially there.

RFL Sunbeamer Nydia Tungsten's "Bid Me" Nets Over 70,000 Lindens
Nydia Tungsten's "Bid Me" event this month for the Relay for Life's Team Sunbeamers was expected to bring in a good amount of Lindens. But the final total was a surprise to all.
Nydia herself expected that most would donate into the "skunk" kiosk. But then team captain (and self-described booty bandit) Rita Mariner started dumping cash in the bunny one. An unknown number then responded by donating to the raccoon/rabbit hybrid, presumably fans of her "Switched Destinies" novel. And so a race was on. While all the kiosks got some cash, the bunny and the raccoon/rabbit hybrid were getting thousands each.
Finally came the Saturday night party at Club Cutlass, where the kiosks were. Things were looking dicey for Nydia, whom remarked in one of her groups, "I have 15 min. until I am a bunny for two months (laughter). So any last minute bids will have to be done now." Some more went into the bunny and hybrid kiosks with the bunny the higher of the two. But two people, who shall remain anonymous, donated enough money into the default, or "stay fox", kiosk at the last minute for it to take the lead. And at the close, Rita would announce the final total.Stay Fox - 32,510 L
Skunkette - 410 L
Nydia - - 14,201 L
Blue Bun - 22,700 L
Purple Fox - 110 L
Human - 300 L
GRAND TOTAL: 70,231 L
Nydia stays Nydia
Presumably to make Rita feel a little better, Nydia would change to her bunny avatar anyway, though just for a little while. But with so much cash raised, putting the team past 360,000 Lindens raised, she wasn't complaining. And Nydia was a bit relieved she wasn't having to spend many weeks in a different look.
At 70,231 Linden dollars raised, this was the most successful single "Bid Me" event done by Team Sunbeamers in it's history. It's also the only recent one the default kiosk won out and the volunteer didn't need to change, possibly the only one. In June 2011, a "Bid Me Human" event with Rita Mariner netted almost 75,000 Lindens for the Passionate Redheads team, the precursor team to the Sunbeamers.
With the Sunbeamer Air Show this Saturday April 25, the team has high hopes of raising more money to pass the 400,000 Linden barrier, and then 500,000 and Jade rank.

The RFL "Bid Me Bald Game On, Cancer Team Challenge"
Today is the final day of the multi-team Relay event "Bid Me Bald Game On, Cancer Team Challenge." Taking place in Arinultra Cay and organized by the Relay Rockers, several teams are putting their virtual hair on the line as they compete to have Lindens donated into their kiosks there, and the team in last place goes bald. I had a few words with Trader Whiplash of the Rockers about the event, and he had a few things to say.

RFL Team Sunbeamers Reaches 360,000 Linden Mark
It was a little less than a month ago that the Relay's Team Sunbeamers reached Platinum rank for this year's fundraising season. Over the next few weeks, it slowly made it's way up to in the 290,000s. Then yesterday, a few events took place. Early in the morning was a joint event between the Sunbeamers and Team Relay for Christ at Distraida's Fishing Area in Alua, with DJ Matt playing the music.
Then came the carnival, with Shockwave Yareach and Cynthia Farshore's bumper car demo derby being the star attraction. While there were periods of quiet, there was no shortage of bumping and explosions. About 15,000 Lindens would be donated into it's kiosk between 8 AM and 4PM, much of it in a last-minute surge of visitors, whom were just as happy to chip into the kiosk as well as blowing something up.
Finally came the end results of Nydia Tungsten's "Bid Me" event. This part of the action got the most Lindens, and will be described in detail tomorrow. What we can say now is it raised the most of any Team Sunbeamer "Bid Me" event, and had results unlike most. But at the end of the day, the team total had passed both the 300,000 and 350,000 marks, ending up at over 360,000 Linden dollars raised.
Stay tuned for the results of the "Bid Me."

Mindscape
When the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education event took place a few weeks ago, there were a number of exhibits. While the main goal of the event was education, there was also one to entertain through art, "Mindscape." Asmita Duranjaya, the owner of InterstellART, organized this effort with fifteen artists behind it. Gemma Cleanslate went over, and took a look.

Video Game Collecting: Part 3 - Get Consoles For Cheap
Today, Cyfir (Cyfiremmerich Resident) has the third part of his series of video game collecting. The obvious problem with collecting older game units is that much of what's out there is broken. But instead of throwing away consoles that don't work or pay someone huge amounts of cash to fix one, another option is learning to reapair them yourselves. While some are no doubt beyond the ability of all but more experienced repair artists, once you set your mind to it and get the right tools, you'll find some are surprisingly easy to get working again once you learn a few things.

Shockwave and Cynthia's Bumper Cars
Tomorrow is the Carnival and Bumper Car Contest by Team Sunbeamers for Relay for Life. Taking place Saturday from 8AM to 4PM, the main feature will be the bumper cars. Not long ago, I had a few words with Shockwave Yareach and Cynthia Farshore about them.
"This event on the 18th will be epic!" Shockwave commented, "Bumpercars AND a full sized carnival. ... I've always thought that SL was the perfect place to make games of your own. I was playing with collisions. And I figured out that making a shaped prim on the back of a car, the impacts from side and back would register. But the front wouldn't. So bumper cars were born. I bought the cars, and modified them for the job."
A sign near the course tells people how to play, touch the starter cube while green, then touch the coin slot inside the car. You're then all set to do some not-so-defensive driving. Shockwave explained, "You have to hit the sides or back with enough force. Just tapping wont' do. You can take 10 hits. First, you start smoking. Then you burn, fire leaping out from the damage. And the fire and smoke, gets in the vision of the driver, makes it harder. So you have 5 minutes to inflict damage on the other cars. 10 points and that car is out. Five people can play at a time. and I have bleachers so friends can watch. And coming up will be moving walls to give more of a challenge. And cannons so the audience can try to take out cars too."
When asked how tricky was it to design, "Well, I took a shortcut by buying the cars from a existing builder. Adding the code to make a working game out of it, was a bit complex. Since they are set physical, I had to turn off the physics to move them back to their pens, then back on again."Shockwave and I would give the cars a try. Then Cynthia Farshore stopped by. She explained that the festival and contest's date in mid-April was to avoid bumping into too many Relay events, "We looked at the relay calendar and March is filled up." Shockwave added with a grin, "It gives us time add obstacles, cannons, explosives."
Prof. Grey's Arcadia Asylum freebie store and carnival came up, Shockwave saying, "Look at the carnival he added to the event." The place had some old time games, and a Moon Cannon, Cynthia commenting, "I told Prof. Grey I hope he gets attention since he helped in this."
Shockwave would add, "The ride is free. But we ask for donations to our team. Its at Sunlight Bay (15,157,26). It's running now if people are needing something to do while stuck at home, due to the virus, grab your friends, smash them up." Cynthia grinned, "Just know that when the event occurs it won't be so easy."
Later on, I would find barriers, and Cynthia had installed the cannons, "Muhahaha! ... Cannons to shoot at the contestants." There were a number there of various sizes and rates of fire, "Last night we were trying different cannons to see what worked best, might just use this mix instead of one type. Oh, and since last time you was here Shocky got the shifting barriers working. That rubber chicken like noise is a warning they are changing."
So it's official. The bumper cars are a real blast to play.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - The COVID-19 Pandemic: Envisioning the Future
"The COVID-19 Pandemic: Envisioning the Future"
Saturday April 18
10 to 11 AM SL time
A major pandemic is sweeping the globe. While new cases and COVID-19 related deaths continue to climb throughout our connected world, there are signs that the pandemic has reached its peak in several parts of the world. Individuals and societal groups are reacting differently, looking for solutions to stem the threat to our health and way of life.
In the face of this threat, people are turning to governments for action, to the medical community for help, to the scientific community for answers, to commercial entities for products, to mass media for information, to social media for support, and to non-scientific organizations for miracles. In many ways, the pandemic is not just a test of our immune systems, but of what we hold valuable and where we put our trust.
Dr. Youngblood will bring us up to date on the pandemic and discuss the science and psychology behind what we are being asked to do to save the lives of others and possibly our own. No one has “2020 hindsight” about what will happen next, but we can share probable futures based on experiences in our past and the ability of the scientific approach to project future .

Crew Meeting
On Saturday April 11, a few of the Newser crew would meet up at our office in HV Community, Cyfir (Cyfiremmerich), Gemma Cleanslate, Nydia Tungsten (appeared after this picture), and myself. We would talk about recent developments, and swap ideas on what to write about this month.
In her hopping around Easter Town, Gemma picked up a bunny suit, and something else. She had an attachment that would have grass sprouting around her, even indoors. Was this a request for more plants in the office? Gemma wasn't saying.
Stand by for some more great articles from the Newser crew.

News and Commentary: Mixed Reaction to The Return of Last Names
For years, Second Life's users have asked for Linden Lab to bring back account surnames. Although display names were an option, some continued to call people by their account names. Finally in March 2018, Linden Lab announced they were working on finding a way to bring them back. To the Lab's credit, they were looking for a way to allow those with "Resident" as their surname to change it, which was the hard part as the Grid had been built with the assumption one's name would never change.
Finally on April 13, Linden Lab felt confident enough that they could release the option to change one's last name. And the reaction from the residents has been, mixed, some of which can be seen in a thread in the official forums. A few cheered, "Awesome!" "Woot!" Some grumbled along the lines of "It's about time." Some laughed at several of the choices, notably "Covfefe" which was seen at a poke in the ribs by the Lab at a certain President whom doesn't always correct his spelling before sending out a comment on Twitter. And a few were seen as clever, "I'm delighted to see 'Bellisserian' on the list, that was a genius decision."
But overall, I've noticed two reactions that are more widespread and/or louder than most. One is an overall disappointment of the choices of surnames Linden Lab gave. There were some early signs of this in February when the winners of the Last Names Contest were announced, "Please tell me they will go through another batch?" "Most of these are horrible in my eyes." So it was no surprise when there were reactions like, "I'm blocking anyone with the last name Covfefe, PERIOD!" "This one is a bit of a disappointment but then again, my expectations have become so low by now, they're practically flatlining."
Personally, I feel Linden Lab was a bit hard-pressed on the matter as they've committed themselves to the old process of a list of surnames being available for a limited time and never used again. And over time, thousands have been used. By 2010, some Lindens tasked with the job of finding new surnames were finding themselves at wit's end, supposedly one just grabbing a list of dessert names. And being a writer of fiction before my time at the Newser, I've had people tell me that my choices of names for characters can sometimes, leave something to be desired.
But the biggest criticism fired at the Lab was the money that residents would have to fork over. A few such as Hamlet Au called the $39.99 / $51.98 charge "a small price to pay." But far more common were reactions like Ryan Schultz whom called the fee "an outrageous price. ... I knew that it would cost me, but I am shocked at just how much it did actually cost me. ... approximately double what I was expecting to pay for such a feature. This is outrageous." He would go on to say that thanks to the economic damage wrought by the coronavirus crisis, people overseas were suffering from currency devaluations, and many US residents as well were suffering, and that Linden Lab was morally obligated to keep this in mind, "these fees seem particularly harsh, tone-deaf and out-of-touch." Some residents also felt Linden Lab should have at least made the first change free for residents, especially those who had to live with the generic surname the longest.
One person responding to Ryan offered one possible reason for the high fees, guessing "they were worried about being hammered with name change requests, so they made it expensive enough that people will think twice. I have no idea how much of a burden large amounts of name changes would be on their system ..." So it could be that the high fees were not done out of greed, but a calculated move to deliberately keep the number of people changing their names low. Oz Linden is on the record as saying they wanted to charge enough to discourage people from changing the name a lot, "Not something you want people to do too frequently. It creates trouble. One of the ways to slow down things we don't want to go too fast is charging people for it."
So will the Lab lower the fee in the future? Probably not any time soon as it's easy to imagine that with the complaints coming in now, there would be more from those who paid early. As the Lab has lowered the price of sims gradually in the past, I imagine after a while as they're more confident of they're system holding up to more people doing so, or few people make the change, they will lower the fee for changing names. Considering right now, some early changers have had trouble with games like Tiny Empires, there are already reasons to wait a little to change.
Of the economic crash caused by the Coronavirus Crisis, this is something Linden Lab couldn't have forseen until just as it was finishing up the feature. Assuming the decision on the fee was a done deal, should they have waited until the economy recovered? Considering it took years for the world to bounce back from the crash of 2008 (and some feel we never really did), probably not. As one of the unofficial rules of Second Life since the beginning has been "real life comes first," those whom have had to tighten their belts due to finding themselves out of a job will have to wait before making the change, even if they like the current list and by the time they have the money the Lab will have gone over to another one they feel is bad.
When the Lab ended last names, it affected Second Life society by creating a dividing line between residents whom signed up before late 2010 and those after. Those with surnames were instantly recognized as longtime residents or "oldbies." As old habits take some time to change, most will probably still assume those with surnames are from 2010 or earlier, at least unless it's one of the more recognizable new ones such as "Covfefe," until they bother to check the profile and the rezz date. Should a lot of people decide to open their wallets and pay the fee, this assumption may start to fade away among most. But if residents hesitate due to the high cost and/or economic troubles and few make the change, many users will likely continue to make this first assumption for some time.
So what do I personally think of the names? On the whole, not a bad choice. There are some that resemble real-life ones such as Takeda, Timmerman, and Ravenhurst. Many are amusing ones, such as Jazzhands, Puddles, Float, and Whimsy. Yeetly and Doge sound like names for meme fans. Melodious and Heartsong sound like a name that someone from the music scene could use, or perhaps a bard in a roleplay community. Mainsail sounds like a name for someone from the Blake Sea area, or perhaps a pirate or Colonial Age roleplay. Littlepaws and Alpha could see some use among the furries, the former among tinies as well. Bellisserian will be popular among fans of the Linden Home continent. Nimble sounds like something one thinking of himself as quick would use. Mercury could end up being used by fans of the late musician of the name, or perhaps space fans thinking of the Mercury Seven. Hexem could be used by someone seeing themselves as a magic user. Of Covfefe, I know a number of opponents and supporters, both enthusiastic and reluctant, of the current President, and can see people of both affiliations using it to poke fun at the other side. As for including "Resident" among the list, I can only call it Linden Lab's sense of humor at work as it's very difficult to imagine a longtime user changing their surname to that.
For better or worse, Second Life's residents since late 2010 now have the option to get a real surname. Like so many things in real life and virtual life, it comes with a catch. So will large numbers open their wallets willingly and reluctantly and pay up, or will most continue to rely on display names? It will take a little time to tell.

Tiny Empires Game Not Working With New Last Names
![]() |
| image from Liska Fuchs |
For Tiny Empires players:
LL has reinstated “last names” effective today as a new option for Second Life Premium Members. Premium account holders may change their first, last or both names.
However, active TE players should NOT, repeat, NOT do this at this time. There are reports that one GV changed her name and was demoted to a wanderer. The Emperor has been asked to confirm or deny this and if confirmed, fix the glitch that allowed it to happen.
Until that time, please do NOT change your name.
This was also mentioned in the Second Life forums.
I just paid £42.97 to change my name to Eva Nova and was so pleased, until I logged back in to SL and put my games HUDS on to find all progress lost. I had a guild in Tiny Empires 3000 and also played the classic game, for many years. ...
Please everyone be careful before you rush in like I did because I have destroyed years of progress on my games.
Also, Oldesoul Eldemar notified the Newser of a notice he'd gotten from Caspertech:
We were prepared for the name change stuff coming well in advance. It will not affect the operation of CasperVend or CasperLet in any way.
However, if you change your name, you will need to continue using your old name to log in to CasperVend.
~Casper
So those in Second Life changing their names early will likely go through a number of inconveniences.

The Second Life Book Club
Last week, Linden Lab announced the start of the "Second Life Book Club," or "Virtual Book Tours" in both the official blog and a press release.
As book publishers adjust to coronavirus-era restrictions, Linden Lab is launching the Second Life Book Club, a new “virtual world book tour” initiative that enables authors to have real-time book readings, engage in meet-and-greets with their fans and promote their publications in front of a live audience within the Internet’s largest user-created virtual world.
The first of what will presumably be a number of events of this theme took place on Wednesday April 8. It was hosted, as well as filmed, by Draxtor Despres, "in partnership with Linden Lab." The event was described as "a multi-author panel that will discuss the new reality of writing and selling books in the age of COVID-19," and had writers Matt Ruff, Ken Liu, SL Huang, and CB Lee.
Upcoming shows will feature guests such as Tad Williams, Christopher Brown, Qiufan Chen, Kelly Robson, Chana Porter and Premee Mohamed.
“When I first reached out to authors, some of them very high profile, I was surprised to get super enthusiastic feedback like: ‘Of course I will come on the show. Can I be a tentacle monster? Can I be a parrot? Can I fly?’,” says Despres. “It’s a dream come true for a book nerd like me!”
Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg adds, “Second Life offers a safe, fun retreat during a time of great anxiety, stress, and social isolation. Through the virtual world, people can stay connected and engage in friendly conversations and fun social activities such as visiting live music performances, virtual nightclubs and deejay events and now even book readings. Virtual world interactions offer a much deeper connection with other human beings than for example video conferencing: through the avatar and the shared space we feel as if we are fully present together.”
The Newser may have an article about what happened in the near future, time permitting. In the meantime, here's the video.
(Click here if the video does not play - starting at 1:20 )
The event took place at BookClub Island (128/115/23)

Yuri's Night
On Saturday, April 11, the National Space Society celebrated "Yuri's Night." The event, named after the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, is to celebrate milestones in manned space flight. The party was high above the Spaceport Bravo sim.
Yuri’s Night party happening now! Celebrate Yuri Gagarin, first person in space, with the International Spaceflight Museum and the National Space Society. DJ Aristippus spins space-themed tunes and songs of the Space Age. Futuristic, space-related or early '60s fashions are encouraged, but in no way required.
There were a mix of early 60s tunes, and space themed songs such as "Walking on the Moon," "Goodbye Cruel World," "Space Girls," and others. People either danced, or floated in the air, often in spacesuits.
There were a few topics, such as the Coronovirus Crisis, which may have caused one NSS member to skip the event, and some sadness over the lack of progress in manned space travel in recent years.
On another note, it was fifty years ago that the accident that crippled Apollo 13 and almost caused the loss of all aboard took place. It took a good deal of effort by both the astronauts and the ground crew to get the crew back to Earth in what would be called a "successful failure."

Breaking News: Last Names Are Back
Good news for Second Life residents with "Resident" as the last part of their account name, which is everyone who signed up after late 2010. Linden Lab just announced that after months of development, users can now either get or change their surnames. Or in layman's terms, last names are back. At least if you have a Premium account.
Given the ongoing interest in “last names” among our community, we’ve reinstated “last names” effective today as a new option for Second Life Premium Members. If you have a Premium account, you will be able to visit https://secondlife.com/my/account to change your first, last or both names. In the true spirit of the original “last names” option last seen in 2010, participating Residents will once again be able to choose from a rotating list of available last names. Some names may only be available for a limited time, so if you see one you like then you might want to claim it quickly!
Already changed your name and want to go back to one of your old names? You can do that too! After you have changed your name once, you will see a list of your previous names below the list of available last names.
To begin with, the option is available only to Premium accounts, which are $11.99 USD a month. Also, one will need to pay a fee to have their name changed, $39.99 USD. So someone with just a basic account will need to pay $51.98 USD.
The Lab has made available a Frequently Asked Questions page.
Stand by for further details in what is clearly a long-anticipated and big development in Second Life

Pictures From Easter Town
Easter is over. But there are still some places up where one can have a little Easter fun for a little while. Among these is Easter Town, which appears in Laura Liberty's Townies sim every year. Gemma Cleanslate was there, and took some pictures as she hopped down the bunny trail.

Coronavirus Survival Store
As we all deal with the novel corona virus some are thinking of how to ease the struggle in real life and also here in Second Life. One of those who did that here is Jadyn Firehawk. I am sure many of you recognize her name as the owner of the beloved Yosemite region that closed last July.
Jadyn went into her vast warehouse inventory and searched out all the calming tools she could find. She is hoping to bring some peace and quietude to those searching for it. That was her purpose in Yosemite and though it is gone the spirit lives on.
Go over and take a look at the numerous gifts you can get. I took many of the pieces for myself,
You can find all the articles displayed at her pop up store

Happy Easter
It's Easter Sunday, which means a number of things in Second Life. For some, it's strictly chocolate and bunnies. One of the best known examples of this is Easter Town in the Townies sim, which Gemma wrote about last year.
And then, there's the more spiritual side of Easter. There are many churches, and prayer groups, in Second Life. Among them is The Vine Christian Mission at Miliaco (160/95/75), and the Egyptian church at the Coptic Egypt sim.
However you celebrate, Happy Easter.
