IBM Announces Closing of Three Art Exhibition Sims

Hamlet Au of New World Notes was recently contacted by his friend IBM Design Researcher Andrew Sempere, or Tezcatlipoca Bisiani as he's known in Second Life. Andrew had a little sad news. IBM would soon be closing three sims used for art exhibitions.

The official statement read, "Since 2006, IBM has maintained a presence in Second Life which has included the venerable IBM 6 sandbox, a home and training ground for some of the grids most talented builders, both IBMers and non IBMers. Through the operation of these servers, IBM has recognized that community building and social content creation are a key part of the value of virtual worlds. With regret we will be closing the IBM Exhibition Space and Sandbox on May 1st, 2011.

"We have had an excellent run and are incredibly proud to have been able to bring you several years of some of the best sim-scale artworks the grid has to offer. The artists we have hosted have gone on to win government grants, brought thousands of visitors to Second Life and helped to raise the profile of virtual artwork for everyone. We wish all of our alumni and visitors continued success in all the endeavors."

Hamlet Au stated IBM used to be a much larger sponsor of Second Life than it is today, once hosting dozens of sims. Most were part of a large virtual campus that in 2007 made the news from a virtual labor protest. But the campus was closed without any announcement sometime in early 2010. As of now, IBM now holds less than 20 sims, not all of which are open to the public.

Hamlet Au speculated Bryn Oh's builds, both artistically well designed and getting much praise and attention from residents on the Grid, were the reason the three exhibition sims lasted for as long as they have. Now, the artists will need another sponsor to house their works.

What's Going On in Your SL Church?

Last year at Palm Sunday, the You Are Loved Ministries held a virtual Passover service. Attented by over 80, it was an experience many found educational, some spiritually uplifting, some both.

SL Newser is interested in what is going on at the various churches in Second Life this Easter season. If you belong to a religious group on the Grid, please let us know what special events you will be doing online.

Events this Week in Second Life from April 19 to April 25

This week in Second Life, stop by Regent's Park in the Mephilo Tor sim this weekend for St. George's Day and have some good English fun in honor of the country's patron saint. Besides this medieval fair, there are numerous dance parties, book and poetry readings, and talk shows.

To read the article, go to Events.

And of course this week has Good Friday and Easter Sunday. While we haven't been passed any bullitens from SL churches (or from synagouges concerning Passover), keep an eye out for them.

Pianist Champagne Rain at Netera's Coffee Lounge

Stopping by Netera's Coffee Lounge on Saturday April 16th, their guest of honor was the talented Champagne Rain. A skilled pianist and singer who performs in real life, she's been making appearances in Second Life recently. This picture was taken while she was both playing the keys, and singing an opera aria.

If you like the classics, by all means drop by an event where she performs.

Music Notes: Greg Colburn and Pillowfish

Shellie Sands is back from her break with a double article on the music scene in Second Life. She writes about Greg Colburn, whom will be moving on to concentrate on his real-life music career. But one group of performers who left, Pillowfish, returned for a "mini-tour" at Woodstock.

RFL Red Hair Event in Honor of Daaneth Kivioq

Daaneth Kivioq from the Passionate Redheads was hospitalized for a stroke recently. Evangeline Ling of Team Relay for Hope announced, "to show Daaneth and Sabine and all of the Redheads our loving support and solidarity, we will be having a Come in Red Hair event at ACS island. This is a multiteam and volunteer effort to show our love. Redheads kiosks will be used. Keep an eye out for more information coming soon."

The event is Tuesday April 19th, 6:00PM - 8:00 PM.

The Relay for Life Cross-Sim Snail Race

On Sunday April 17th, what was billed as the "Greatest RFL Giant Snail Race of all Time and Space" took place on the Second Life mainland. The action began at 11AM SL time at the Superior sim, and took place across about forty more. Along the track, spectators lined up (the organizers asked for no more than ten a sim). And of course there was Racer X in his macro-bunny, more recently joined by Sante Klees in his giant kangaroo rat, cheering them on.

Considering the enormous lag the race can produce, I went to one of the spots along the way, Canal and Castle at the Lakeville sim. There, I ran into one of the spectators, waving a Relay flag and cheering. It was Ariel Loonie of Luskwood. We chatted a little, watching what snails we could see through the lag go by. I myself checked on the Treet.tv broadcasts time to time.

Ariel and I were in front of a French restaraunt. Looking in the back was a surprise: a dead racing snail. Green mush leaked from the shell. Was this the fate of the loser of one of the races? No one was talking.

The race would go on for well over an hour. Finally, the first snail crossed the finish line just in front of the Noyo sim. Or was it really a snail? Winner Tindallra Soothsayer had a heavily modified racing snail with an Easter theme, notably a big bunny face. Instead of the bubbly froth most snails drooled, Easter eggs dropped from it's mouth.

Meeting up with Sante Klees later, he told me organizers behind the scenes joked it was a "snabbit." Did being part bunny give it an unfair advantage? Perhaps the next cross-sim race in May will tell.

*edit* The film of the event is now available

Grand Opening Party at Savannah's Oasis

Late last night, dropped in on the Grand Opening party at Savannah's Oasis. While not jam-packed, Savannah told me that a number of people dropped by during the day, saying they wouldn't be able to make it, and wished her well.

There was much funnery about, one of the guys prancing for the girls in a dance cage, and then Savannah herself doing the same for the males. Despite the party advertised as "clothing optional," people mostly behaved themselves and kept them on ... mostly. At a couple times, the store caught fire. Fortunately for the insurers, it was soon put out without damage. Savannah must have expected the party to get pretty wild.

Almost unnoticed next to the store was a statue on a fountain. At first I thought someone was hiding behind it. Then I saw nobody was. The statue itself was an avatar! It was probably an alt that someone managed to have on at the same time as her main, but I didn't ask.

In private earlier, Savannah told me the store wouldn't have gotten off the ground if it wasn't for her best friend Covadonga Writer. Longtime readers may remember Cova as one of our beloved coworkers from Second Life Newspaper. A real-life journalist as well, her articles were imaginative, such as her "SLoop" and SL fiction "Real Life Raider" stories.

Cova told me she'd been quite busy in real life for some time, but should be able to be inworld a little more often. Let's hope she'll be able to share some more of her experiences in print.

Syzygy Steampunk Conservatory Opens

A Steampunk Conservatory is now open to the public at Syzygy Eos (46, 55, 21). Residents of the Syzygy community are experimenting with constructing temporary, rotating installations near their new community center, and I volunteered to do the first one.

The project officially opened on April 9 with an Open House for residents and friends. Among those who stopped by for cake and champagne were Celtic Infinity, Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks, Samantha Glume, Judykins Guyot, Kulta Hannu, Grijandomore Greene, Eugenia Calderon, Bixyl Shuftan, Anika Deschanel, Desiree Laryukov, and Adra Letov.

The Conservatory and most of the items are from Steam4, the steampunk hunt that was held in March. Some of you may remember that I wrote about Steam4. The prizes were fantastic—much too nice to stay in my inventory. The conservatory building is from Primwynly, and the lovely fountain is from Zoe’s Garden. Perryn Peterson, who organized Steam4, was unable to attend the open house, but she participated by donating the steampunk sounds. Some of the more unusual plants that are on exhibit are the Ironopillus, both flowering and immature ones, Iron Leaf Shroom, and Gear Grass. These were part of the “Forest In a Box” collection from Epic Toy Factory.

On a stand inside the conservatory, you will find a Steampunk Journal. It contains note cards about the build, shopping landmarks for many of the items that are on display, and information about the Syzygy community. Help yourself to a slice of Decadent Chandelier Cake and a glass of champagne, too. As you walk through the conservatory, watch out for Jules, a mechanical bird from Damani. He nips.

The Conservatory will be open until May 9.

A Friend Moves On

Regular readers know of Any1 Gynoid, the perky neko freelance reporter whom once worked with us during the days of Second Life Newspaper, and later joined CNN iReports, inviting us to use her articles. Her articles, although on occasion political, had a bouncy tone and were overall optimistic.

Today, she contacted SL Newser, stating for personal reasons she will stop writing her articles about Second Life. A glance at her iReports page showed only a blank space: erased.

Any1 didn't say what her plans were, but we at Second Life Newser wish her well.

"SLAngry Birds"

Some of you have heard about "Angry Birds," the highly successful game for handheld devices, that later were available on computers as well. Apparently, Chantal Harvey took it a step further, bringing it to SL.

With the help of a few friends, she made a funny little SL Machinima based on the game: SLAngry Birds. The set itself was made by Maxamillian Merlin, with a free bird av nearby provided by Madcow Cosmos. The Homestead Sim belongs to Chantal of course. When everyone got together for the machinima, the result was hilarity.

Chantal left the SLAngry Birds build up for anyone who wanted to play with it. She says people drop by "all the time" to give it a try. Find the explosive teddy bear, sit in the catapult, and then launch yourself for a blast.

Chilbo's "Chilbowl" Bowling Alley Raising Funds for Japan

Taking a look at the Chilbo website, the place in Second Life known for it's builders and artists has been raising funds to help out Japan since March.

From March 15th the normally free bowling lanes were set to collect Lindens, which went to the Doctors without Borders charity to help Japan following it's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

“It is my hope that Chilbo and the SL community at large, can once again step up to help another community in a time of need,” states Chibi Lexenstar, co-manager of the bowling alley. “Much like our efforts to assist the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, I believe our individual measures can create a synergistic effect especially at a time like this. Let’s all contribute to the rescue and rebuilding efforts of a country that has seen immense tragedy over the past several days.”

AM Radio to Close His Places in Second Life in Six Months

Ahab’s Haunt

There are strange things out there in those waters between the mainland and the islands. I am lucky to live on the water’s edge in Thorstar, so we sometimes take our sail boat out on the protected waters. We just sail up the channels to see what is going on, or what new builds there are. There are several large marinas not too far away with lovely yachts and small boats.

Last time we were out on the water we saw a strange looking place on the map so headed in that direction. As we approached, we saw that it is a leviathan skeleton! There it rests in the waters of Ahab’s Haunt, white, massive and imposing. It stands about 70 m high, and I did not measure the length. I fell into the water and discovered that the bottom of the ocean there is as interesting as the skeleton, with many sunken boats and even a submarine down there.

You can sunbathe on the beach, or lie in a hammock and enjoy the quiet sunlit view. There are boat races in the area so you may see one. It all belongs to Governor Linden. I discovered that he and Silent Mole seem to have built most of the items there, and he is part of the Department of Public Works. It is definitely worth a visit.

The Madpea Live-Aid for Japan

Last weekend, the noted gaming area in Second Life, Madpea, hosted a “Live-Aid” music event to raise money for Japan. For three days at the Hoshi Island sim, dozens of musicians sang for the crowd that gathered. The money raised went straight to the Japanese Red Cross.

... at 6am SLT ... the MadPea Live Aid fundraiser starts for the Japan disaster. Please show your support for this tragedy and stop at Hoshi Island Stage during the weekend. There will be 65 hrs of non stop live performers!!! This is a must see event!!! The full schedule is attached with a LM to Hoshi Island Stage. Thank You!!!

The musicians who performed included POL Arida, Strum Diesel, Beth Odets, and many more.

Despite the starting date of April 1, there was no April Fool Prank played (at least that SL Newser is aware of), though there was one example of chuckles when Hamlet Au showed up in an avatar much different from his normal one. There was also a gridwide Hunt announced, the Dark Room hunt, plus the Take of Kalevala.

The website kept track of how much was raised. A total of 240,343 Linden dollars were raised, or $890.16 US Dollars.

“Live-Aid” is not the end for Madpea’s fundraising. The Passionate Redheads recently announced that Madpea would be helping to sponsor Relay for Life

The Alien Egg Hunt Returns

Last year, Shockwave Yareach created an “Alien Egg Hunt” maze game for Easter. This year, it’s back again, along with it’s danger at every turn.

For this Easter, the sci-fi horror themed game, unlikely as it sounds, is back under the Passionate Redheads Relay For LIfe team, “The Passionate Redheads proudly present our annual egg hunt maze, with a twist - In Space EGG HUNTS YOU!! That’s right, these ain’t no ordinary eggs. They are ALIEN eggs. And you’re not collecting them, you’re shooting them!”

In an adventure worthy of the movie “Alien,” your objective, survive the trip through the maze, blasting any eggs, crawlers, and monsters you come across. If a facehugger ends up on you before you blast it, you’ll have to start all over again. Blast 16 eggs, and you win.

Before going past the start of the maze, one needs two things. One is the HUD provided for 50L at the start of the maze by paying the RFL vendor for them. It keeps track of the eggs, crawlers, and monsters shot. You’ll also need a gun of some kind. Because of the huge variety of personal firepower in Second Life, even when limited to free weapons, Shockwave has a test egg out in front of the maze as a test. If a gun works on the egg, it will work in the maze. There’s also a RFL gun vendor next to the HUD vendor.

Going into the maze, one has to be careful of the eggs and monsters. Get too close to an egg or a crawler that hasn’t been blasted, what ends up on your face is not egg yolk, and you have to begin again. Not knowing what’s around each and every corner, as well as the occasional steam clouds that may help hide a monster until it’s too late, it makes for an unnerving feeling one gets inside the maze. Multiple players can be in the maze, but no harassment is permitted by one player on another (monsters are another story).

Following the blasting of the 16th egg, the player has won, and the maze will announce your time. Prizes will be awarded for the best five times. The hunt will run at least to Easter, possibly longer.

The Alien Egg Hunt is at Southern Colorado (157, 140, 701)

Events this Week in Second Life from April 5 to April 11

March is behind us, and we spring into April. Among the events this week is the Fantasy Faire, a weeklong Relay for Life event in which content creators sell items for charity, with an emphasis on the fantasy genere. But this is far from the only event. There are the usual dance parties, book & poetry readings, and talk shows across the Grid.

For a list of the happenings, go to Events.

RFL: "Fools For a Cure"

On Friday April 1, while people in Second Life and real life were pulling April Fools jokes on one another, a Relay for Life event was hosted by the Circle of Life team in the Tol Galen sim, the "Fools for a Cure" Carnival.

Join carnival host Fleure Homewood for a rolicking good time with games, rides and live music! The carnival will benefit the American Cancer Society as part of the Circle of Life Relay for Life team of Elf Circle. Come have fun and contribute to a good cause!

Porting in, there were a number of people at the live music event, either dancing away, or sitting down on the seats. The avatars were mostly humans and elves. Not everyone was near the music stage. A few were checking out some of the sights and rides. The rides included a ferris wheel and a haunted house.

The party went on all day from 4 AM to 10 PM SL time.

New SL Viewer with Optional Basic Mode Launches After Eleven Days as Beta, Now Default Viewer For New Users

This week after a short tryout peroid, the new beta Version 2 viewer with an optional simpler basic mode was not only made official, it was made the default download for new users.

Since the initial launch last week, we’ve also deployed an additional beta version with fewer bugs and more stability and performance improvements. ... we are releasing the SL Viewer into general availability and it is now the default download for new users. A few new features that are included are the destinations guide which allows rapid access to selected areas around SL for new users by interest, the ability to change avatars quickly and “click to walk.” Just click on a point ahead of you and your avatar will automatically start walking there. Additionally, we encourage you to fill in your “Interests” in the Edit Profile tab of your Profile page. Eventually, you’ll see that we are going to do some fun things with Interests once more people fill them in. Keep in mind, that we’re just at the beginning of developing the Basic experience for new customers and that we will continue to improve it, and add features, as time goes on.

To me, the new viewer seems to have a rather rapid approval process. And I wasn’t alone. Tateru Nino on her blog stated it went from beta to official in eleven days, “Mind you, only seven of those eleven days were working days.” From alpha to beta was even faster, one day. She questioned if the Lindens actually took the time to listen to residents, pointing out that the new viewer “does not actually work – at least not from where I’m sitting. It’s the only viewer that Linden Lab has put out in my memory that fell at the starting gate.” She later stated she was messaged by Rod Humble himself, saying they were working on the problem, and it would be fixed soon.

Hamlet Au’s article reminded readers of the basic viewer’s “point and click” movement and “instant avatar selection” from a number of newbie avs. His attention was also drawn to the “Profile Completeness” progress bar, “To reach 100% completion in your Second Life profile, you have to add some interesting details: Specially, your Real Life Biography.” Hamlet Au called this a “necessary nudge” to make Second Life more appealing to the mass market, feeling “avatar-only identities have made Second Life niche.” Personally I disagree for a number of reasons, but this is for another column.

Much to my surprise, Hamlet Au personally showed me he’d been having troubles too with the new viewer. During the fundraiser for the Japanese Red Cross at Madpea, I teleported in to see how it was going. I soon noticed an Asian schoolgirl av appear next to me with an anime “meatball” hairdo. Then I saw the name: “she” was Hamlet! After both of us recovered from our mutual surprise at seeing each other like this, Hamlet told me while checking out the basic viewer, he had gotten stuck in the girl avie, and couldn’t change out of this embarrassing gender-bender that got chuckles from both the Madpea audience and competing online newspaper editor alike. It was an "only in Second Life" moment that I'll be thinking of for a while.

Checking the feedback on the forum, comments were mixed, probably mostly negative. One wondered if this was an attempt to keep griefers from making alt accounts too quickly. One of the minority who approved thought a newcomer could learn the basics of Second Life in ten minutes.

And for myself, like other versions of Viewer 2 in recent months, this won’t work for me at all. This made looking to see what others found my only source of information besides the official Linden statements.

The Top April Fool?

Daniel Voyager made a list of what he considered the best articles related to April Fools on Second Life both this year and previous ones. Some were downright unbelievable, such as Linden Labs getting involved in genetic engineering of man-animal hybrids. Gwyenth Llewelyn did a "Class 6 Servers Are Out" article in 2009 which seemed perfectly believable to this working stiff (maybe one needs to be a serious techie to get more of the "joke"). Most were at least a little believable to get some going, "Aw, how could I fall for that?"

Daniel's top April Fool? The one we pulled this year. ;-)

It wasn't my only idea, which makes me wonder which jokes out there were put aside.

There just seems to be something about April Fools Day, at least for humorists. ;-)

BREAKING NEWS: Second Life to Shut Down for Six Months

*Update: April Fool's*

In a press release by Linden Lab, CEO Rod Humble announced that the Second Life grid would be shut down at one minute to Midnight on April 4, due to increasing technical glitches that threatened to permanently take down the virtual world.

“By now, most have you have probably wondered if the lag is getting worse,” he stated, “It’s not your imagination. It has been getting worse, and current efforts to repair it have yielded only small, temporary relief. Without a shutdown, Second Life will be unusable to most within three weeks.” Rod stated it would likely take six months to fix the problems.

“We have gone by for eight years without a major overhaul. Band-Aid measures offered temporary fixes. But now, it is time to bite the bullet, roll up our sleeves, and get to work.”

Rod Humble went on to state that work on Mesh and Viewer 2 would continue while the Second Life Grid was closed, “We are confident enough about the acceptance of Viewer 2 by older residents when the Grid is restarted. There are no plans for the continued support for Viewer 1 and the third party viewers based on it when the Grid is reopened.”
